A possibility of the implementation of a quartz crystal sensor to the determination of chemical oxygen demand is examined by checking the electrochemical behavior of the sensor in a glucose solution. Since the surface of a quartz crystal has to be oxidized, a relatively active metal is coated on the surface of a usual 9 MHz AT-cut crystal. The electrochemical behavior is investigated by measuring the changes of current, resonant frequency and resonant resistance while a constant potential is applied. The crystal is installed in a specially designed container, and a quartz crystal analyzer is utilized to measure the frequency and resistance simultaneously. The variations of the measurements are examined at different concentrations of glucose solution, and a proper relation between the concentrations of glucose solution, and a proper relation between the concentration and the measurements is analyzed. As a result, it is found that a linear relation between the concentration of less than 900 ppm and the peak current when a constant potential of -180 mV (SSCE) is applied. The relation can be utilized for the determination of glucose concentration in sea water, and considering a direct relation between gluose concentration and chemical oxygen demand tells a possibility of the measurement of chemical oxygen demand using quartz crystal oscillators.
The purpose of this study is to improve the concentration of U(VI) in carbonate solution reasonably, which to improve the application potential of the alkaline reprocessing processes. The dissolution behavior of U3O8 in carbonate peroxide solutions was investigated under different conditions, including pH, carbonate concentration, and solid-liquid ratio. The results showed that the dissolution rate of U3O8 increased with the increase of pH from 8 to 11 in the mixed carbonate solution containing 0.5 mol/L H2O2. The role of carbonate ions in the dissolution of U3O8 was further elucidated by observing the dissolution of UO4⋅4H2O in carbonate solutions. Furthermore, the concentration of U(VI) in 3 mol/L Na2CO3 solution was successfully increased to 350 g/L under ultrasonic-assisted conditions at 60 ℃ and a solid-liquid ratio at 1/2 g/mL. Meanwhile, it is suggested that increasing the concentration of carbonate ions can improve the stability of the dissolved solution containing uranyl peroxycarbonate complex.
The objective of this study is to delineate removal efficiency of the Linear alkylbenzene sulfonates(LAS) in solution by $TiO_2$ photocatalytic oxidation as a function of the following different experimental conditions : initial concentration of LAS, $TiO_2$ concentration, UV wavelength and pH of the solution. It was increased with decreasing initial concentration of LAS and with decreasing pH of the solution. Removal efficiency increased with increasing $TiO_2$ concentration but was almost the same at $TiO_2$ concentration of 2 g/L and 3 g/L, i.e., for initial LAS concentration of 50 mg/L. It was removal efficiency was 85% at 150 min in the case of $TiO_2$ concentration of 0.5 g/L but 100% after 150 min in the case of $TiO_2$ concentration of 1 g/L, 100% after 110 min in the case of $TiO_2$ concentration of 2 g/L and 3 g/L. UV wavelength affection on the removal efficiency of LAS decreased in the order of 254, 312 and 365 nm as increasing wavelength. But the removal efficiency of LAS was nearly the same at UV wavelength of 254 nm and 312 nm.

Electroetching rates of $FeCl_3$ solution were increased according to increasing solution temperature. Activation energy of electroetching at Be'36 and 5A/$dm^2$ condition was 28.3Kcal and also, at Be'46 and 5A/dm$^2$ condition was 33.2Kcal. At Be'36 concentration of $FeCl_3$ solution, electroetching rate were more higher than at Be'46 concentration. Surfaces of etched grooves obtained at 8A/$dm^2$ or higher current density in 46 Be' concentration of $FeCl_3$ solution were observed to be flat and smooth owing to suppressing chemical etching reaction. Distinctly etched boundaries became to be appeared at 2A/$dm^2$ in Be'41 electroetching condition by differential effects. In case of applying 8A/$dm^2$ current density to Be'46 of $FeCl_3$ solution, etching depth were 4 times and side etching were 6 times more than chemical etching case respectively.
To elucidate the flow properties of carboxymethyl chitin (CM-chitin), the critical concentration and flow equation of aqueous CM-chitin solution were investigated. The concentration of $0.8\%$ appeared to be the critical concentration. So interaction occurred between polymer chains in the CM-chitin solutions had the higher concentration than $0.8\%$ but not in lower than $0.8\%.\;0.5\%$ CM-chitin solution was revealed as a newtonian flow but $1.0\%$ CM-chitin solution showed a pseudoplastic flow. Flow constants of $3.0\%$ CH-chitin solution were 0.0908cp for $\eta_\infty$, 770cp for $\eta_0$, 0.81 for $\beta$ and 0.36 for n. Therefore, flow equation of $3.0\%$ CM-chitin solution was as follow; $$\eta=0.1+\{{770/(1+0.81D^{0.36})\}$$.
In this paper, a microstrip patch sensor antenna (MPSA) for detecting the concentration of an ethanol-water solution in a microliter volume is proposed. A rectangular slot was added at the radiating edge of the patch to increase the sensitivity to the relative permittivity change. To improve a low input resistance caused by placing an ethanol-water solution, which is a polar liquid with high dielectric constant and high loss tangent, on the patch, a quarter-wave impedance transformer was added between the 50-ohm feedline and the patch, and the MPSA was fabricated on a 0.76 mm-thick RF-35 substrate. A cylindrical container was made of acryl, and 15 microliters of the ethanol-water solution was tested from 0% to 100% of ethanol concentration at 20% intervals. Experiment results show that the resonant frequency increased from 1.947 GHz to 2.509 GHz when the ethanol concentration of the ethanol-water solution was increased from 0% to 100%, demonstrating the performance as a concentration detecting sensor.
Induction of phase II enzymes such as quinone reductase (QR) or glutathione S-transferase (GST) is considered a major mechanism of protection against initiation of carcingenesis. The induction of detoxification enzymes and glutathione were studied with Lonicerae Flos aqua-acupuncture solution (LFAS), Angelicae gigantis Radix aqua-acupuncture solution (AGRAS), and Gamdutang aqua-acupunture solution (GAS) in murine hepatoma cells grown in microtiter plate wells. LFAS, AGRAS and GAS were potent inducers of QR activity. LFAS was induced about 2.6-fold at concentration of $3{\times}$. AGRAS and GAS were also induced about 2.6-, 1.8-fold at concentration of $5{\times}$, respectively. In addition, GST activity was increased with LFAS, AGRAS, and GAS. GSH levels were increased about 2-fold with LFAS at concentration of $5{\times}$, 1.3-fold with AGRAS at concentration of $3{\times}$, and 1.2-fold with GAS at concentration of $5{\times}$. These results suggested that LFAS, AGRAS, and GAS may act as blocking agents against carcinogenesis by induction of phase II marker enzymes.
Ion concentration polarization is an electrokinetic phenomenon which occurs in membrane systems, such as in an electrodialysis and fuel-cell system. But the phenomenon is not fully understood because hydrodynamics, electrokinetics and electrochemistry are coupled with each other. Here, we report that there occurs a change of pH value of buffer solution in concentration polarization phenomenon. To visualize the change of pH, the litmus solution which is one of the pH indicators was used. It is conjectured that the pH of solution changes because hydrogen ions were concentrated in cathodic side and hydroxide ions were concentrated in anodic side. We anticipate that this work may contribute to the fundamental understanding on the ion concentration polarization phenomenon.
Several effects on Pb$^{2+}$ removal by crab shell from aqueous solution were investigated. As the increase of initial Pb$^{2+}$ concentration and decrease of initial crab shell concentration, the time required to reach an equilibrium state and the residual Pb$^{2+}$ concentration increased. In our experimental ranges, the optimum initial Pb$^{2+}$ concentration and crab shell concentration were below 103 mg/$\ell$ and over 0.5 mg/$\ell$, respectively. Also, in order to investigate the mechanism of Pb$^{2+}$ removal by crab shell in aqueous solution, the crab shell was compared with chitosan and chitin on aspects of Pb$^{2+}$ removal capacity and Pb$^{2+}$ removal rate. The Pb$^{2+}$ removal by crab shell was greater than that by chitin and chitosan. The role of chitin was not so great in Pb$^{2+}$ removal by crab shell. The Pb$^{2+}$ removal by chitosan was not exactly correlated to the molecular weight of chitosan. weight of chitosan.

Apparent diffusion coefficients of Cl-ions through hardened cement paste(HCP), which were partly substituted blending materials, were determined. Also, pore solution was extracted from HCP which were immersed in NaCl solution, and Cl- concentration of the solution were analyzed. Partly substitution of pozzolanic materials considerably reduced the diffusion rate for Cl-ions and Cl- concentration of pore solution. Binding capacity of Cl- is related to the content of Al2O3 and pozzolanic reactivity.
