  • In this study, response of reversibility of membrane flux during chemically enhanced backwash (CEB) to changes in filtration time, filtration flux and coagulant concentration dosing during ultrafiltration (UF) process was investigated using a regression model. The model was developed via empirical modelling approach using response surface methodology. In developing the model, statistically designed UF experiments were conducted and the results compared with the model output. The results showed that the performance of CEB, evaluated in terms of the reversibility of the membrane flux, depends strongly on the changes in coagulant concentration dosage and the filtration flux. Also the response of the reversibility of membrane flux during CEB is independent of the filtration time. The variance ratio, VR << $F_{value}$ and $R^2$ = 0.98 obtained from the cross-validation experiments indicate perfect agreement of the model output with experimental results and also testify to the validity and suitability of the model to predict reversibility of the membrane flux during CEB in UF operation.

  • This study was carried out to identify how soybean seed protein concentration is influenced by climatic factors. Twelve lines selected for seed protein concentration were studied in 13 environments of North Carolina. Sensitivity of seed protein concentration, total seed protein, and seed yield to climatic variables was investigated using a linear regression model. Best response models were determined using two stepwise selection methods, Maximum R-square and Stepwise Selection. There were wide climatic effects in seed protein concentration, total protein and seed yield. The highest protein concentration environment was characterized by the most high temperature days(HTD) and the smallest variance of average daily temperature range (VADTRg), while the lowest protein concentration environment was distinguished by the fewest HTD and the largest VADTRg. For protein concentration, all lines responded positively to average maximum daily temperature(MxDT), HTD, and average daily temperature range(ADTRg) and negatively to ADRa, while they responded positively or negatively to average daily temperature(ADT), variance of average minimum daily temperature (VMnDT), and VADTRg, indicating that genotypes may greatly differ in degrees of sensitivity to each climatic variable. Eleven lines seemed to have best response models with 2 or 3 variables. Exceptionally, NC106 did not show a significant sensitivity to any climatic variable and thus did not have a best response model. This indicates that it may be considered phenotypically more stable. For total seed protein and seed yield, all the lines responded negatively to both ADTRg and VADRa, suggesting that synthesis of seed components may increase with less daily temperature range and less variation in daily rainfall.

  • Temperature dependence of the critical micelle concentration (CMC), $x_{CMC}$, in micellization can be described by ln $x_{CMC}$ = A + BT + C lnT + D/T, which has been derived statistical-mechanically. Here A, B, C, and D are fitting parameters. The equation fits the CMC data better than conventionally used polynomial equations of temperature. Moreover, it yields the unique(exponent) value of 2 when the CMC is expressed in a power-law form. This finding is quite significant, because it may point to the universality of the thermal behavior of CMC. Hence, in this article, the nature of the equation ln $x_{CMC}$ = A + BT + C lnT + D/T is examined from a lattice-theory point of view through the Flory-Huggins model. It is found that a linear behavior of heat capacity change of micellization is responsible for the CMC equation of temperature.

  • A local wind model and a three dimensional local environmental model including advection, diffusion, deposition. and photochemical reactions were performed at Gwangyang Bay, Korea, to predict air flow and air pollutants concentrations. A large grid was used, and nesting method was employed for small grid calculation. From the meterological module simulation, we were able to reproduce local wind characteristics such as sea/land winds and mountain/valley winds simulation at Gwangyang Bay. In addition, the concentration module showed high concentration regions at Yosu industrial complex, Gwangyang steel company. and Container anchor. It was also seen that air pollutants were dispersed by sea/land winds. A comparison between the measurement and the prediction of sulfur dioxide and nitric oxide, which are relatively low-reacted pollutants, was performed. However, the measured nitrogen dioxide and ozone concentrations were higher than the simulated ones. Particularly, ozone concentration between 8 a..m. and 8 p.m. agreed well, but the measured ozone during the rest of time were generally higher.

  • A concentration change during grade transition operation in thin slab casting is investigated through computer simulation and the results are compared with experimental measurements. Fluid flow and mixing patterns in various tundish levers and flow rates were analysed by a three-dimensional mathematical model. Based on the contained results, a simple, efficient and accurate computational model is suggested to predict the concentration profile at the outlet of the tundish. Based on the model, mixing in and below the mold was analyzed considering electromagnetic braking force. The predicted concentration profiles show good agreements with the measured values. It is found that the lower vortices in the mold are suppressed by the electromagnetic field and a plug-like flow region develops, which decreases the intermixing of two different grades of steel and shortens the length of transition region.

  • The relationship between areal total phosphorus(TP) and areal hydraulic loading was identified and used as defining the trophic state of the reservoir. And three simple, conceptual TP models were tested against the measured in-reservoir TP concentration. The analyses were based on water quality data measured in the Ki Heung reservoir for two years. The results showed that Ki Heung reservoir has undergone eutrophic state, and Dillon's and Vollenweider's TP models were in close agreement with the measured annual mean TP concentration. However, the OECD's model understimated the measured annual mean TP concentration in the Ki Heung reservor. A discussion is given for the hypothetical application of TP loading plot which might be useful for establishing the TP control program in the resavoirs/lakes.

  • This study is a theoretical analysis and experimental effect of oxygen concentration, exhaust velocity and trap inlet temperature on particulate ignition temperature with installation of ceramic filter trap in diesel engine. So the following results are obtained. 1, Based on the fundamental experiments of the regeneration process, the analytical model was developed and the results from the analytical model agreed with the experiments, then the validity of the model was proved. 2, The ignition temperature for accumulated particulate was proportional to the exhaust velocity and it was known that the optimum exhaust velocity was about 15m/sec. 3, The ignition temperature for accumulated particulate was inversely proportional to the oxygen concentration and the trap inlet temperature, and a minimum oxygen concentration of 5% was required to sustain regeneration. 4, This experimental filter trap(EX-66) is found about 30% of smoke reduction efficiency in comparison with existing muffler.

  • In vivo activity of recombinant human erythropoietin (rh-EPO) has been examined using polycythemic model in mice and acute hemorrhage model in rats. The number of reticulocytes in blood stream was increased after a single injection of rh-EPO depending on the dosage of rh-EPO in polycythemy model. It seemed that optimal dose of rh-EPO for polycythemic mice was around 1-10 U/kg. Rh-EPO also showed the effectiveness for increase of reticulocyte numbers both in male and female rats after bleeding. The number of reticulocytes and the change of hemoglobin concentration in the blood stream of normal rats has been examined after injection of rh-EPO. The maximum value of reticulocyte was observed on the 6th day of the injection in these normal rats. In addition, the increase of reticulocyte and the concentration of hemoglobin were dependent on the dosage of rh-EPO. The increase of hemoglobin concentration was continued to the 9th day after injection. In this study, the efficacy of rh-EPO was confirmed in both mice and rats.

  • This paper presents a prediction model for the aerosol generation of cutting fluid in turning process. Experimental studies have been carried out in order to identify the characteristics of aerosol generation in non-cutting and cutting cases. The indices of aerosol generation was mass concentration comparable to number generation, which is generally used fur environment criterion. Based on the experimental data, empirical model for predicting aerosol mass concentration of cutting fluid could be obtained by a statistical analysis. This relation shows good agreement with experimental data.

  • This study was conducted to observe the effect of various kinds of sugars and their molar concentrations on the Maillard browning reaction. To observe the effects of various kinds of sugar, glucose, fructose, tagatose, xylose, and sucrose were employed. A model solution consisting of 0.2 M sugar and 0.2 M glycine was prepared and heated at $100^{\circ}C$ for 5 hr. The model solution with adjusted concentrations of either tagatose or glycine was also heated at $100^{\circ}C$ for 5 hr. Tagatose showed the fastest Maillard reaction, followed by xylose, fructose, glucose, and sucrose. After glycine concentration of the model solution was fixed, the model solution showed more browning with an increase in tagatose concentration. When the tagatose concentration of the model solution was fixed, the model solution showed more browning with an increase in glycine concentration. The model solution with a fixed concentration of glycine showed more more browning than that with a fixed concentration of tagatose, since the former had higher amounts of the reactant.
