Purpose: This review article was written to investigate how the various factors, such as lacrimal thickness, CL's thickness and Dk, affects the influx of $O_2$ diffusion into the cornea. Methods: A mathematical model was proposed to analyze the oxygen diffusion reaching the cornea through the tear layers and contact lens based on Fick's law and the principle of continuity of the diffusion flux through the each layers. Results: The model predicts how the parameters such as the thickness of tear layer on the cornea, both the Dk and thickness of contact lenses etc., affect the oxygen tension at cornea and oxygen flux entering the cornea. Conclusions: It is found that either too flat or too tightly fitted contact lenses can cause the oxygen deficiency at/inside the periphery of the cornea because of the reduction of oxygen flux resulted from too thickened tear layer.
COMS(Communication, Ocean, and Meteorological Satellite) is the geostationary satellite for the mission of satellite communication, ocean monitoring, and meteorological service. It is scheduled to be launched at the end of 2008. Ocean payload of COMS named as GOCI(Geostationary Ocean Color Imager) observes ocean color and derives the chlorophyll concentrlition, the concentration of dissolved organic material and so on. In operational oceanography, satellite derived data products are used to provide forecasting and now casting of the ocean and coastal water state. In this work, conceptual design of structural part of GOCI is carried out and two baseline concepts are proposed. The one is dioptric module that uses lens system and the other is TMA(Three Mirror Anastigmat) module that uses mirror system. Trade-off studies between two concepts are investigated by considering optical and mechanical performances. Finally, on-going tasks and future development plan are briefly discussed.

In-situ particle monitors(ISPMs) are widely used for monitoring contaminant particles in vacuum-based semiconductor manufacturing equipment. In the present research, the performance of a Particle Measuring Systems(PMS) Vaculaz-2 ISPM at low pressures has been studied. We generated the uniform sized methylene blue particle beams using three identical aerodynamic lenses in the center of the vacuum line, and measured the detection efficiency of the ISPM. The effects of particle size, particle concentration, mass flow rate, system pressure, and arrangement of aerodynamic lenses on the detection efficiency of the ISPM were examined. Results show that the detection efficiency of the ISPM greatly depends on the mass flow rate, and the particle Stokes number. We also found that the optimum Stokes number ranges from 0.4 to 1.9 for the experimental conditions.

We report an optimum fabrication condition for formation of concave lens shaped core cross-section of silica single-mode fibers with hydrofluoric (HF) acid solutions and arc discharge. A desired depth of curved cross-section of the silica fiber core and its surface smoothness were obtained with optimized concentration of the HF solution, etching time, and arc discharge condition.
This study investigates experimentally evaporation characteristics of nanofluid droplets containing 50 nm alumina($Al_2O_3$) particles and the wettability changes on a hydrophilic glass surfaces. From the captured digital images by using a CMOS camera and a magnifying lens, we examined the effect of particle concentration on droplet evaporation rate which can be indirectly deduced from the measured droplet volumes varying with time. In particular, with the use of a digital image analysis technique, the present study measured droplet perimeters and the contact angles to study the wetting dynamics during evaporating process. In addition, we compared the measured total evaporation time with theoretically estimated values. It was found that as the volume fractions of nanofluid increased, the total evaporation time and the initial contact angles decreased, while the droplet perimeters increased.

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are structures of carbon atoms bonded together in hexagonal honeycomb shapes, with multi-walled CNTs having a very high thermal conductivity of $3000W/m{\cdot}K$ and single-walled CNTs having a conductivity of $6000W/m{\cdot}K$. In this work, the transmittance and the thermal diffusivity of a multi-walled carbon nanotube dispersion with a concentration of 1.5 M were measured using a single beam method, a dual beam method, and the thermal lens effect. The nonlinear optical coefficients were obtained by using the z-scan method, which moved the sample in the direction of propagation of the single laser beam, propagation and the thermal diffusivity was measured using a double laser beam. As a pump beam, a diode-pumped solid state (DPSS) laser with a wavelength of 532 nm and an intensity of 100 mW was used. As the probe beam, a He-Ne laser having a wavelength of 633 nm and an intensity of 5 mW was used. The experimental result shows that when the concentrations of the sample were 9.99, 11.10, 16.65, and 19.98 mM, the nonlinear absorption coefficients were 0.046, 0.051, 0.136 and 0.169 m/W, respectively. Also, the nonlinear refractive indices were 0.20, 0.51, 1.25 and $1.32{\times}10^{-11}m^2/W$, respectively, and the average thermal diffusivity was $1.33{\times}10^{-6}m^2/s$.
Purpose: The material properties of contact lenses were measured by varying the amounts of an initiator and a cross-linking agent that are the basis for the manufacture of contact lenses, and the drug delivery effects depending on the material properties of contact lenses were compared. Methods: Contact lens samples were manufactured using HEMA by varying the concentration of the cross-linking agent and the initiator. To investigate the changes in physical characteristics depending on the material properties, the results of the experiments on the amount of drug elution, water content, refractive index, and the amount of protein adsorption were compared. Results: For the contact lenses manufactured by varying the amount of the initiator, the water content hardly changed, and the refractive index also hardly changed. The amount of drug elution was not much affected by the changes in the initiator, but the amount of elution increased as the water content increased. The amount of protein adsorption was hardly affected by the changes in the initiator, but the amount of adsorption increased as the water content decreased. Conclusions: The changes in the properties were hardly affected by the changes in the amount of the initiator, but were significantly affected by the changes in the amount of the cross-linking agent. As the amount of the cross-linking agent increased, the water content decreased, while the refractive index increased. Also, when the water content increased, the amount of drug elution increased, while the amount of protein adsorption decreased.
Purpose: To determine the effect of marketed multipurpose contact lens solutions (MPSs) on human corneal epithelial cells (HCEpiCs) toxicity by using image analysis. Methods: HCEpiCs were exposed six MPSs (product A-F) at 0.05~50% for 2h, 12h, 24h, and 48h respectively. HCEpiCs were fixed and stained with Draq5 after exposure with MPSs, and the cell viability and apoptosis were evaluated by using confocal microscope and ImageXpress UltraTM. Results: Viabilities of HCEpiCs exposed to MPS A-F for a 2h were not affected, while reductions (52~75%) in cell viability over a 12h exposure of MPS B, MPS C, MPS D and MPS F, and significant more reductions (29~73%) over a 24h and 48h-exposure. Apoptosis of HCEpiC was not affect over a 12h MPS exposure, however was significantly increased (199~526%) over 24h and 48h MPS exposure. Among the products MPS D, E and F reduced viability of HCEpiCs and apoptosis increased more than MPS A (p<0.05). Conclusions: Lower concentration of MPSs have not an cytotoxic effect on HCEpiCs, however higher concentration of MPSs induce apoptosis and reduce viability of HCEpiCs. Therefore, it need to develop MPS having antimicrobial effectiveness with low cytotoxicity.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate the antibacterial activity Xanthium strumarium L. extract against bacteria causing eye disease and to examine the possibility as a natural preservative on behalf of synthetic preservatives which are added to the contact lens solution. Methods: Antibacterial activity of Xanthium strumarium L. extract against the bacteria causing eye disease was assessed using agar diffusion method, and determined by whether clear zone was formed around paper disc and in terms of the size(mm) of clear zone.Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa were used in the study. Results: Xanthium strumarium L. extract provided activity against Staphylococcus aureus KCCM 40050 in a concentration of $1000{\mu}g/20{\mu}l$with an clear zone of 11.5 mm. Moreover, Xanthium strumarium L. extract showed an activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa KCCM 11803 in a concentration of $1000{\mu}g/20{\mu}l$with an clear zone of 9.0 mm, and against Pseudomonas fluorescens KCCM 40223 with an clear zone of 7.0 mm. Conclusions: Antibacterial activity of Xanthium strumarium L. extract against the bacteria causing eye disease was proved. This result suggests that Xanthium strumarium L. extract can be a potential natural preservative, which is added to contact lens solution.
Purpose: The present study was aimed to compare the tear volume and distribution by corneal eccentricity when fitted with spherical and aspherical RGP lenses. Methods: Spherical and aspherical RGP lenses were fitted in best alignment on a total of 77 subjects (136 eyes) in their twenties and thirties without any ocular disease or ocular surgery experience. The tear volume was analyzed by estimating the concentration of tear stained with fluorescein in the center of RGP lens as well as at the mid-peripheral and peripheral areas, and the difference of tear distributions was analyzed according to corneal eccentricity. Results: Tear distribution from the center to the peripheral area was not significantly different when spherical RGP lenses were fitted on the corneal eccentricities of e < 0.38 and $0.68{\leq}e$, indicating the relatively even tear distribution compared with other corneal eccentricity. In the case of aspherical RGP lenses, the difference of tear distribution between the central and peripheral areas was smaller than spherical RGP lenses. The significant difference of tear distribution according to RGP lens design was observed in the corneal eccentricity of 0.48 < e < 0.68. In other words, more even tear distribution was shown when aspherical RGP lenses were fitted on the cornea with eccentricity of $0.48{\leq}e<0.68$ and spherical RGP lenses were fitted on the cornea with eccentricity $0.68{\leq}e$. Furthermore, tear volume in the mid-peripheral area increased with higher corneal eccentricity. Conclusions: The results suggest that the appropriate selection of RGP lens design according to corneal eccentricity is necessary since tear volume and distribution by the regions of spherical and aspherical lenses are affected by corneal eccentricity.
