Background: This study aims to analyze the effects of air pollutants, such as particular matter, to the number of outpatient visits for allergic rhinitis in eup, myeon, and dong administrative boundaries. Methods: Dependent variable was the number of outpatient visits for allergic rhinitis per 10,000 people by region. Independent variables were air pollutants such as PM10, PM2.5, SO2, O3, CO2, NO2, and temperature that estimated by using Kriging analysis in all eup, myeon, and dong boundaries. Panel analysis was applied for the analysis to prove the relation between outpatient visits and the concentration of air pollutants. Results: Analysis results showed that particular matter concentration varied by regions and season. Panel analysis showed that outpatient visits for allergic rhinitis had positive relationships with PM10, PM2.5, SO2, O3, and CO2 in all panel models. Conclusion: Regional variation of particular matter concentration should be considered in establishing regional policies for allergic rhinitis.
Considering the effect of dynamic response amplification, a reliability analysis of an offshore wind turbine support structure under an earthquake is presented. A reliability analysis based on the dynamic response requires a large amount of time when using not only a level 3 approach but also level 2 such as a first order reliability method (FORM). Moreover, if a limit state is defined by using the maximum stress at a structural joint where stress concentration occurs, a three-dimensional element should be used in the finite element analysis. This makes the computational load much heavier. To deal with this kind of problem, two techniques are suggested in this paper. One is the application of a quasi-static structural analysis that takes the dynamic amplification effect into account. The other is the use of a stress concentration factor to estimate the maximum local stress. The proposed reliability analysis is performed using a level 2 FORM and verified using a level 3 simulation approach.
Backgrounds: Endotoxin, which found in the outer membrane of the gram-negative bacteria cell wall, makes up almost all of the lipopolysaccharide(LPS). When people are exposed to endotoxin,it can result in diverse health effects such as an airway irritation and inflammation, fever, malaise, bronchitis, allergic asthma, toxic pneumonitis, hypersensitivity lung disease. Cases among the elderly, children or pregnant can occur more frequently than a healthy adult if they are repeatedly exposed to the existing endotoxin. Therefore, we investigated and assessed the environmental characteristics associated with the airborne endotoxin concentration level in six hospital lobbies. Method: Endotoxin from indoor air in six hospital lobbies was measured by an area sampling method and analyzed according to American Society for Testing and Materials International(ASTM international) E2144-01. Total suspended particulate(TSP), carbon dioxide($CO_2$), temperature and humidity were also measured by using direct reading measurements or airborne sampling equipment at the same time. Environmental characteristics were appropriately divided into two or three groups for a statistics analysis. One-way analysis variable(one-way ANOVA) was used to examine a difference of the endotoxin concentration, depending on the environmental characteristics. In addition, only variables with p-value(p<0.25) were eventually designed to the best model by using multiple regression analysis. Results: The correlation analysis result indicated that TSP(p=0.003) and $CO_2$(p<0.0001) levels were significantly associated with endotoxin concentration levels. In contrast, temperature(p<0.068) and humidity(p<0.365) were not associated with endotoxin concentration. Levels of endotoxin concentration were statistically different among the environmental characteristics of Service time(p=0.01), Establishment of hospital(p<0.001), Scale of hospital(p=0.01), Day average people using hospital(p=0.03), Cleaning time of lobby(p=0.05), Season(p<0.001), and Cleaning of ventilation system(p<0.001) according to ANOVA. Finally, the best model(Adjusted R-square=72%) that we designed through a multiple regression test included environmental characteristics related to Service time, Area of lobby, Season, Cleaning of ventilation system, and Temperature. Conclusions: According to this study, our result showed a normal level of endotoxin concentration in the hospital lobbies and found environmental management methods to reduce the level of endotoxin concentration to a minimum. Consequently, this study recognized to be requirement for the management of ventilation systems and an indoor temperature in order to reduce the level of endotoxin concentration in the hospital lobbies.
Objectives: This study investigated the relationship between the blood mercury concentration and cardiovascular risk factors in elderly Korean individuals living in coastal areas. Methods: The sample consisted of 477 adults (164 males, 313 females) aged 40 to 65 years who visited a Busan health promotion center from June to September in 2009. The relationship between blood mercury concentration and cardiovascular risk factors including metabolic syndrome, cholesterol profiles, blood pressure, body mass index (BMI), waist circumference and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), was investigated. Variables related to blood mercury concentration were further evaluated using multiple regression analysis. Results: The blood mercury concentration of the study population was 7.99 (range, 7.60 to 8.40) ${\mu}g$/L. In males, the blood mercury concentration was 9.74 (8.92 to 10.63) ${\mu}g$/L, which was significantly higher than that in females (7.21, [6.80 to 7.64] ${\mu}g$/L). The blood mercury concentration of the study population was related to several cardiovascular risk factors including low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol (p=0.044), high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol (p=0.034), BMI (p = 0.006), waist circumference (p = 0.031), and WHR (p < 0.001). In males, the blood mercury concentration was significantly correlated with WHR in the multiple regression analysis. Conclusions: In males, the blood mercury concentration was related to waist-to-hip ratio, which is a central obesity index and cardiovascular risk factor. Our finding suggests that cardiovascular disease risk in males was increased by mercury exposure via an obesity-related mechanism.
In this study, the stress concentration phenomenon for the dissimilar joints(ceramic-metal) bonded by thermal treating using a soft-insert metal(copper) was investigated with the aid of FEM(finite element method) under the load condition of uniform tension. The analysis was carried out by the supposing that stress states are plane stress or plane strain and elastic or elastic-plastic. And the Von Mises yield criterion and the incremental theory as plastic flow were adopted in this analysis. As the summarized results obtained, the stress concentration phenomenon was severer as the soft insert metal was thicker, in plane strain than in plane stress and in elastic-plastic state than in elastic state. Furthermore, the inducing mechanism of stress concentration was well expressed by the constraint forces(Fc) generated between the soft and the hard material.
Surface defects in structural members are apt to be origins of fatigue cracks growth, which may cause serious failure of whole structures. Most structure has a part where stress concentrates such as welded joints, corner parts, etc. And then, analysis on crack growth and penetration from these defects, therefore, is one of the most important subjects for the reliability of LBB design. The present paper has performed an experimental and analysis on the fatigue crack propagation by variety in crack length of surface cracked plate with stress concentration part. The crack growth behavior can be explained quantitatively by using Newman-Raju equation and the stress partitioning method proposed by ASME B&P Code Sec. XI. The stress concentration factor $K_t$ has affected on the crack growth. The crack growth after penetration depends upon the initial front side crack length.
The volatile organic compounds exposure is governed by the source distance and dispersion of the pollutant into air and groundwater. The purpose of this study was to validate suggested models for the prediction of concentration distributions. The study design was organized into different methods to simulate industry site. The distribution models generally showed a fair agreement with measured data. For graphical representation of concentration of volatile hydrocarbon, it has to obtain a continuous representation of the contamination of the site. Therefore, the used interpolative methods examined for this project are the IDW(inverse Distance Weighting) and kriging method. In the results, in summary, all two different methods can be used to quantify exposures at a particular source area, and thus provide, a solid foundation for making risk-based decisions. All the calculations can be performed using Excel's built-in functions, and the capabilities of geospatial analysis allow the results to be displayed visually. However, anyone who uses these methods should understand all of the assumptions and limitation.
This paper proposes the development of a new method for online analysis which measured acid concentration in a pickling line. Pickling is the most important step to remove surface scale layers and is strongly depending on the exactly controlled pickling liquor composition. Today, there is no feasible system available for the online control of pickling lines. Within this paper, new methods for online analysis of pickling liquors have been tested and implemented into an overall pickling process control tool. This method measured simultaneously the hydrochloric acid and iron ion concentration in a solution of hydrochloric acid by measuring the ultrasonic speed, the solution temperature, and the electrical conductivity. Experimental results showed excellent precision and the measurement error was ${\pm}2g/l$ compared with the neutralization titration measurement.
The time of the onset of double-diffusive convection in time-dependent, nonlinear concentration fields is investigated theoretically. The initially quiescent horizontal fluid layer with a uniform temperature gradient experiences a sudden concentration change from below, but its stable thermal stratification affects concentration effects in such way to invoke convective motion. The related stability analysis, including Soret effect, is conducted on the basis of the propagation theory. Under the linear stability theory the concentration penetration depth is used as a length scaling factor, and the similarity transform for the linearized perturbation equations. The newlly obtained stability equations are solved numerically. The resulting critical time to mark the onset of regular cells are obtained as a function of the thermal Rayleigh number, the solute Rayleigh number, and the Soret effect coefficient. For a certain value of the Soret effect coefficient, the stable thermal gradient promote double-diffusive convective motion.
Dynamic behavior of an ammonia-water absorption system was investigated numerically. Thermal-hydraulic model for a single-effect 3 RT chiller was developed by applying transient conservation equations of total mass, $NH_3$ mass, energy and momentum to each component. Transient variations of system properties and transport variables were analysed during start-up operation. Numerical analyses were performed to quantify the effects of bulk concentration and charging ratio on the system performance in terms of cooling capacity, coefficient of performance, and time constant of system. For an absorption chiller considered in the present study, optimum charging ratio and bulk concentration were to found to exist, which resulted in the maximum cooling capacity and COP. The time constant increased as the charging ratio increased, but decreased with the increase of bulk concentration.
