  • This study was to examine the accumulated concentration of lead in the organ of Arabidopsis thaliana grown in the soil added three different concentrations of lead. The accumulated concentrations of lead in the stem of plant grown in the soil added official standard concentration of lead of pollutant exhaust notified by the Ministry of Environment (1 mg/l), concentration ten times higher than the official standard concentration (10 mg/l) and concentration fifty times higher (50 mg/l) were similar to the rate of increase between three different concentrations, and increased average 24% compared with normal plant stem. The accumulated concentrations of lead in the leaf of plant grown in the soil added three different concentrations of lead were increased average 57% compared with normal plant leaf. And accumulated concentrations of lead in the leaf was no significant difference according to increase of lead concentration added in the soil as stem, the rate of increase was similar to between three different concentrations. The accumulated concentrations of lead in the root of plant grown in the soil added official standard concentration of lead of pollutant exhaust and concentration ten times higher were increased average 114% compared with normal plant root, but increased about 861% in the concentration fifty times higher than the official standard concentration. This result contrast with the data of stem and leaf. The accumulated concentration of lead in the plant body of Arabidopsis thaliana was increased according to increase of lead concentration added in the soil. Especially, the accumulated concentration of lead in the plant body grown in the concentration fifty times higher than the official standard concentration was increased about 2.6 times than normal plant. These results show that lead contaminated within the soil was more accumulated in the root than the stem or leaf, and accumulated concentrations of lead in the stem and leaf were not increased in proportion to the concentration of lead in the soil, but very increased in proportion to the concentration in the root.

  • Mercury amount in vapor phase from 3 types of CFL(compact fluorescent lamp) are estimated by measuring mercury concentration in vapor phase. The mercury concentration in vapor phase from CFL is sharply decreased during initial time and then the change in the mercury concentration is slightly decreased up to 24 hours. The mercury concentration in vapor phase is almost constant after 42 hours, which can be called by stabilized concentration. It can be estimated that the stabilized concentration is caused by the evaporation of mercury in the residues of broken CFL and can be affected by temperature and pressure in crushing apparatus. The mercury concentration for CFL manufactures are in the order of A < B < C as the same results of the initial mercury concentration and the stabilized concentration in vapor phase. As increased air flow rate, the partial pressure of mercury is decreased and the amount of mercury is reduced. Initially, the mercury concentration in vapor phase emitted from CFLs is higher than the regulatory level of $0.1mg/m^3$ in the specific facilities regardless of air flow rate. Hence, it is absolutely necessary that mercury in vapor phase should be controlled at the point of crushing campact fluorescent lamp.

  • This study is carried out to determine the concentration of the ozone and the factors affecting the variation of ozone concentration in the ambient air in Seoul. The one-hour average concentration of ozone $(O_3)$, sulfur dioxide $(SO_2)$, nitrogen oxides (NO and $NO_2$), suspended particulate (TSP), carbon monoxide (CO) and non-methane hydrocarbon (NMHC) at 5 sites in Seoul measured from September to October in 1983 and 1984 were analysed statistically along with meteorological data for the same period. The results were as follows; 1. The average concentrations of ozone at 5 sites during the period ranged from 3.3 to 9.1 ppb, they were below 20 ppb of the ambient air quality standard of Korea. 2. The maximum hourly concentration of ozone occurred between 2 and 3 p.m. in a day and concentration at night were very low but higher concentrations were observed at around 4 a.m. 3. The concentration ratio between NO and $NO_2$ in Seoul was relatively lower than that for the cities of foreign countries reported so far. 4. The ozone concentration has negative correlationships with the concentration of other primary pollutants$(SO_2, NO, NO_2, CO and NMHC)$ in simple regression analyses. 5. The ozone concentration was positively correlated to wind speed, temperature and insolation intensity but negatively correlated to relative humidity. 6. Stepwise multiple regression analysis of the ozone concentration to the pollutants and meteorological factors indicate that insolation intensity and $[NO_2]/[NO]$ were the primary influencing factors. 7. The three factors of insolation intensity, $[NO_2]/[NO] and NO_2$ concentration had a significant combined effect on the ozone concentration $(r^2 = 0.47-0.57)$.

  • Objectives : The objective of this study is to observe the effect of Saryuktangkamibang, Saryuktang with Liriopis Tuber, Lycii Fructus, Schizandrae Fructus, and Bombyx Batryticatus, on the experimental diabetes. Methods : In order to induce diabetes experimentally, injected streptozotocin to the vein in the tail of rats and then treated oral administration of Saryuktangkamibang water extracts. In the measurement of the variation levels of glucose, ALP, creatinine, and BUN concentration for each concentration levels for serum (0.2g/100g, 0.4g/l00g, 0.6g/100g), concentration level of glucose significantly decreased in 0.4g/l00g concentration level of Saryuktangkamibang. With this 0.4g/l00g concentration level of Saryuktangkamibang, the following conclusion was derived from the measurement of the serum levels of glucose. ALP, AST, ALT, creatinine, and BUN concentration for the injection of each 4th, 11th, and 18th day. Results : 1. In the measurement for each concentrations, the glucose concentration level in the serum significantly decreased on the 9th day in the Saryuktangkamibang-dosed group. 2. The creatinine and BUN concentration level in the serum significantly decreased on the 9th day in the Saryuktangkamibang-dosed group to which 0.6g/100g injected. 3. In the measurement for each dosage dates, the glucose concentration level in the serum significantly decreased on the 11th day in the Saryuktangkamibang-dosed group to which 0.6g/100g injected. 4. The AST concentration level in the serum significantly decreased on the 11th day in the Saryuktangkamibang-dosed group. Conclusion : Saryuktangkamibang, Saruktang with Liriopis Tuber, Lycii Fructus, Schizandrae Fructus, and Bombyx Batryticatus, has an effect of hypoglycemia, with no hepato-renal dysfunction. For the experimental results above, in that nephrotoxicity significantly decreased on the 0.6g/100g concentration, another research such as study for effect in other ranges and study for effect of dosage term except the concentration range of this study is necessary. Also dosage of appropriate concentration of Saryuktangkamibang is thought to provide valuable aid to cure on diabetes.

  • The purpose of this paper is to analyze the location, population growth. and cargo concentration of Korean port-cities. In the location theory, Sommer (1976) and McGee (1967) models are newly introduced, as are the Rimmer (1967), Bird (1965), Hoyle (1981) models. which were already introduced in previous studies from Korea. Analysis of population growth in the Korean port-cities is conducted using data from 1966 to 1998. Rimmer and Hoyle's concentration models are used to measure cargo concentration from 1966 to 2000. The main results of this paper are as follows: First, Korean ports are concentrated on the East Sea, the Southern Sea, and the West Sea. Their locations are closely related with the hinterland. the inland city, and growth of port-cities. In considering the foreign countrys' cases, Korean port-cities are similar to the models of Bird and Hoyle. Second, the populations of Ulsan and Pohang grew at the fastest rate in 1966-1998, while the port cities in the Honam and Jeiu region grew at much lower ratios. Most port cities are located near large industrial complexes. Third the growth rates of Gwangyang, Daesan, Pohang, Pyungtaeg, and Samchunpo increased, while those of Busan. Mukho, Masan, Mogpo, Yeosu, and Sokcho declined. Of particular note, the growth rate of Busan remained negative after the late 1980s. Fourth. empirical results using the Rimmer (1967) model indicate that Gwangyang, Daesan, Pyungtag, and Pohang have shown the concentration. But the deconcentration was shown from the Busan, Mukho, Janghang, Gunsan, Mogpo, Yeosu, Masan, Sokcho. and Jeju. Fifth, the concentration of ports located in West coast region has shown the mixed results between concentration and deconcentration except the concentration of early 1970s and 1990s. The concentration of ports located in East coast region has shown the concentration before the middle of 1980s. And deconcentration after the middle of 1980s have appeared. The Southern coast region has shown the continuous deconcentration except the partial concentration of early 1986. and 1991. Planners of Korean ports should find out the factors of concentration and deconcentration of each ports and should determine factors such as investment priority level. size and scope in order to ensure the balanced development of regional ports and port-cities.

  • The public's concern on ambient $PM_{2.5}$ has been increasing in Korea. We have estimated (1) the annual and monthly mean $PM_{2.5}$ concentrations, (2) the frequency by the $PM_{2.5}$ concentration interval, and (3) the high concentration occurrence duration time between 2015 and 2018 at 16 administration regions. We found that there have been differences in all three above parameters' trends among the studied 16 regions in Korea. Still, Jeonbuk showed the highest rank in all three parameters' trends. In Jeonbuk, the average $PM_{2.5}$ concentration and the sum of the frequency fraction when the $PM_{2.5}$ concentration being over $75{\mu}g/m^3$ between 2016 and 2018 was $28.4{\mu}g/m^3$ and 9.0%, respectively. And the days when the $PM_{2.5}$ concentration is over $50{\mu}g/m^3$ between 2015 and 2018 were 149. Chungbuk was the only region with the increasing trend of $PM_{2.5}$ concentration between 2016 and 2018. And in Seoul and Gyeonggi, the average $PM_{2.5}$ concentrations decreased whereas the high concentration frequency fraction increased between 2016 and 2018. Also, it is found that there have been differences in the trends of the frequency by the $PM_{2.5}$ concentration interval and the high concentration occurrence duration time between $PM_{10}$ and $PM_{2.5}$.

  • This study was performed to suggest concentration methods leading to the production ofhoney with an excellent flavor by examining the effects of the concentration temperature and method on changes in 5-hydroxymethyl-2-furaldehyde (5-HMF) levels and the flavor components of honey. The 5-HMF contents of honey samples concentrated in a tray concentrator at 45, 50, 60, and 70℃ were 2.1, 2.3, 2.5, and 3.1 mg·kg-1, respectively, demonstrating that the 5-HMF contents increased as the concentration temperatures were increased. The honey vacuum-concentrated at 70℃ showed a higher 5-HMF content than that at 60℃, similar to the tray-concentrated honey at different temperatures. The main and other minor flavor components of the honey were volatilized and significantly reduced after vacuum concentration. In the tray concentration, all of the honey samples concentrated at 40, 50, 60, and 70℃ showed flavor component patterns similar to each other, and most of the main and other minor flavor components in the honey were volatilized and significantly reduced after tray concentration. As such, most of the main and other minor flavor components of the honey were mostly removed at 70℃ after both the vacuum concentration and tray concentration processes. The effects of the concentration method and temperature on the viscosity, 5-HMF level, and flavor components of the honey were found to be significant in this study. Given that the components of honey were shown to undergo significant physicochemical changes depending on the concentration method used and temperature during laboratory-scale production, the concentration methods devised in this study can be applied industrially.

  • The purpose of this paper is to analyze the degree of cargo concentration at Korean ports using Theil's Entropy and to compare the results with those of Gini coefficient, Hoyle(1983), and Hirshmann-Herfindahl models. The entropy indices were compared with other models after measuring the cargo concentration for the period of 1981-2000 among the 18 Korean ports. The core results of empirical analysis are as follows: first, the empirical results of entropy indices show the following trends: all the ports(concentration except 1996's slight deconcentration), ports in Western area(deconcentration in 1990s and slight concentration in 2000), ports in Southern area(deconcentration in 1980s and 1990s except concentration in 2000), and ports in Eastern area(continuous trends of concentration). However, competition power will be decreased if concentration is increased, because of the character of entropy index. The empirical results of 4 indices except Hoyle model show the comparatively same directions in terms of trends. This study found out the similar results among the following models: All the ports(entropy index & Gini coefficient & H-H model), ports in Western area(Entropy index &Hoyle model), ports in Southern area(Entropy index & Gini coefficient), and ports in Eastern area(Entropy index & H-H index). The policy planner of Korean ports should find out the determination factors of concentration and deconcentration of each ports and decide the investment priority, size and scope for balancing the development of regional ports.

  • The effect of initial cell concentration on the characteristics of ethanol fermentation was investigated in the batch fermentation of Saccharomyces cerevisiae ATCC 24858. The characteristics were investigated in the range of 60 to 230 g/l of the initial sugar concentrations and 0.5 to 85 g/l of the initial cell concentrations. When the initial cell concentrations were 27 g/l for 60 g/l of the initial sugar and 85 g/l for 230 g/l, the fermentation time required for the complete consumption of the initial sugar was one hour, respectively. The ethanol productivity increased with the initial cell concentration so that, in the case of 100 g/l of initial sugar, the productivity rose up to 55 g/l/hr at 55 g/l of the initial cell concentration. The specific growth rate decreased according to the increase in the initial biomass concentration and finally became zero at around 25 g/l of the cell concentration regardless of the initial sugar concentration. The specific ethanol production rate was constant as 1.02 g/l/hr up to 150 g/l of the initial sugar. However, the rates decreased sharply with the augmentation of concentration of the initial sugar above 160 g/l. The overall ethanol yield represented a constant value, 0.475 g/g irrespective of the initial cell and sugar concentrations. The overall biomass yietd showed a trend to diminish in values with the biomass and ultimately to reach zero more than 25 g/l of the initial cell concentration.

  • Exposure level of respirable coal dust of underground coal mines in Taebaek area was evaluated. Personal air samplers with 10-mm nylone cyclones were attached to the coal workers including drillers, coal cutters, their assistants, haulers, and separators. Log-normality of respirable dust exposure concentration were tested by Kolmogorov-Smirnov one-sample test. Differences of means of respirable dust exposure concentration between work sites were tested by one-way ANOVA test and multiple comparison(Scheffe) test. And differences of respirable dust exposure concentration of principal and assistant workers in drilling sites and in coal faces were tested by paired t-test. Relation of respirable dust exposure concentration for the principal workers and their assistants in drilling sites and in coal faces were tested by regression analysis. The results were as follows : 1. All of the respirable dust concentration were log-normally distributed. 2. There were not only significantly different means of exposure concentration between drillers and coal cutters but between coal cutters and haulers. 3. Means of exposure concentration of drillers and drilling assistants were not significantly different. And means of exposure concentration of coal cutters and coal cutting assistants were not different.
