Bringing Human Computer Interaction in Computer Science Classrooms : Case Study on Teaching User-Centric Design to Computer Science Students (컴퓨터 사이언스 강의실 HCI 도입 : 컴퓨터 사이언스 학생에게 사용자 중심 설계 교육에 관한 사례 연구)

  • In recent decades, focuses on usability and emphases on user-centric design have become more prevalent in the field of software design. However, it is not always easy for engineers and computer scientists to think in the users' shoes. Human-computer interaction (HCI) is a field of study that focuses on creating technologies easier and more intuitive for the users. This paper is based on teaching HCI skills to undergraduate computer science students in a software application design course. Specifically, this paper employs: first, the HCI skills taught to the students; second, the tendencies and challenges of the students in creating user-centric applications; and lastly, suggestions based on our findings to promote HCI in developing user-friendly software. While more firm conclusions shall be reserved for more formal empirical studies, the findings in this paper still offer implications and suggestions for promoting user-centric approach for software designers and developers in the technology industry.

  • The purpose of this paper is to show how much the subjects based on the mathematics and statistics contribute to the curriculum and the education of the students majoring in engineer of the Computer-Software department, and to recognize the roles of mathematics and statistics in the Computer-Software department. In order to advance the world-class Computer-Software department, it is necessary for Math/Stat to ensure the role as a basis for the Computer-Software majors as well as to extend its role to relate the core studies of the Computer-Software majors. Consequently, the recognition of Math/Stat in the Computer-Software major will enable to establish the short or/and long-tern plan for student education.

A Theoretical and Empirical Survey of Computer Attitudes

  • For years, research on the impact of students' attitudes on learning has maintained a spot amongst the most highly discussed topics in education. Particularly, over the past decades, researchers have made great strides in better understanding attitudes toward computers. This article presents a critical review of the current state of research by re-examining how attitudes toward computers have been studied. First, the review introduces an overview of the theoretical foundations and the origins of research on attitudes toward computers. Then, the article summarizes previous literature and knowledge about computer attitudes and provides a review of major findings from research on the effects of some factors affecting the formation of computer attitudes. The discussion reveals a number of major issues and challenges, which include unclear characterization of computer attitudes, problems with measurement tools, and the lack of studies using methods other than brief questionnaires. The unsolved problems cause conflicting, inconsistent and inconclusive results and affect interpretation in the study of computer attitudes. The article also suggests the main recent and future directions of research on attitudes toward computers. Finally, it concludes by providing implications for educators.

  • Computer-Mediated Communication (CMC) based on electronic bulletin board system (e-BBS) has been widely used for various educational purposes since the advent of the Internet. Instructors can achieve pedagogical goals by analyzing the contents of postings. They can be benefited technically from analytic information on discussion activities. Studies on content analysis and social presence in communication have been traditionally done by social studies. However, researches on computational and logical analysis of the phenomenon are rare. To do that we propose a formal model to represent and analyze communication activities logically. The model consists of interactivity vector providing a formal representation of discussion activities and interactivity chart providing a graphical representation of interactivity vector. The formal approach can be used as a useful technical assistance to analyze and compare discussion groups computationally.

Automatic Detection of the Middle Tooth Crown Part for Full Automatic Tooth Segmentation in Dental CT Images

  • In this paper, we propose the automatic detection method which find the middle part of tooth crown to start individual tooth segmentation. There have been many studies on the automation of individual tooth segmentation, but there are still many problems for full automation. Detection of middle part of tooth crown used as initial information for individual tooth segmentation is closely related to performance, but most studies are based on the assumption that they are already known or they can be represented by using a straight line. In this study, we have found that the jawbone curve is similar to the tooth alignment curve by spatially analyzing the CT image, and propose a method to automatically detect the middle part of tooth crown. The proposed method successfully uses the jawbone curves to successfully create a tooth alignment curve that is difficult to detect. As the middle part of tooth crown is in the form of a tooth alignment curve, the proposed method detects the middle part of tooth crown successfully. It has also been verified by experiments that the proposed method works well on real dental CT images.

The Effects of Mediated Computer Environments on Young Children's Representation of Replay (컴퓨터와 교사의 상호작용이 유아의 재연에 대한 표상력의 발달에 미치는 효과)

  • This study investigated the effect of young children's interaction with a teacher and computer environments on their development of representational competence cf replay, the children's ability to construct and reconstruct actions. A pretest-posttest design with one experimental group and one control group was used; quantitative analyses, including interview assessments and coded observations of children's work in the context of educational interventions were supplemented by qualitative analyses of this work. Thirty-nine children (2-5 years of age) were randomly assigned to either an experimental or control group. The educational intervention provided to the experimental group involved a sequence of twenty sessions incorporating a series of three computer environments. A teaching strategy, based on Vygotsky's Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD) and Sigel's distancing theory, was used to mediate children's interaction with these computer environments. Results indicated that children's representational competence kept developing and reached a higher stage and the educational intervention fostered the development of representational competence, with strong evidence of near transfer but no evidence of far transfer. These results suggest that representational competence is a teachable concept and that a complex mediating structure allows children to reconstruct their previous experiences and apply them to problem situations.

  • In this study, we developed an optical coherence tomography(OCT) using a sweep-source laser whose center wavelength is 1310 nm and a probe of hand-held type. The developed hand-held probe targets to diagnose the middle ear, so it is miniaturized for ease and convenience of control. For the first time, we performed in-vivo clinical experiments on tympanic membrane(TM) perforation patients not reported from previous studies about OCT. The high-resolution sectional images of tympanic membrane perforation can be obtained. There aren't many studies about diagnostic instrument of the middle ear and diagnosis with sectional image of the middle ear, so the developed OCT system and hand-held probe are applicable to tympanic membrane perforation and other pathologic diagnosis in the middle ear.

  • In this paper, we present the cost measurement metrics for the operation management and service improvement besides the general maintenance. The cost measurement metrics of the operation management and service improvement are based on the metrics that are classified and summarized precedent studies and complemented by empirical measuring indicators, and we propose the maintenance cost estimation model based on this metrics. The maintenance costs can be calculated detailedly, because the proposed metrics can be used selectively, depending on the scope of the information system maintenance. The effectiveness of the proposed maintenance cost measurement metrics and cost estimation model is verified by comparison between existing studies and our research.

  • Modern people argue that mental health care is necessary because of various factors such as unstable income and conflict with others. Recently, equipments capable of measuring electrocardiogram (ECG) in wearable equipment have been widely used. In the case of overseas, it can be seen as a medical assistant [14]. By using such functions, studies are being conducted to distinguish representative emotions (joy, sadness, anger, etc.) with objective values. However, most studies are increasing accuracy by collecting complex bio-signals in a limited environment. Therefore, we examine the factors that have the greatest influence on the change and discrimination of biometric information on each stimulus.

  • The purpose of this study is to revise the curriculum of mathematics, which is the basic for the engineering studies, especially for the disciplines of the electronic engineering, computer science, computer engineering, mechanical engineering, environmental engineering, civil engineering and architecture. Another goal of this research was to integrate a computer software, MATLAB into a mathematics course so that the mathematical concepts and theories in the course can be visualized to help students understand some difficult subjects and enhance their interest in mathematics.
