The main reason for its instability is sediment scouring downstream of hydraulic structures. Both physical and numerical models have been used to investigate the influence of soil properties on scour hole geometry. Nevertheless, no research has been conducted on resistance parameters that affect sedimentation and erosion. In addition, auxiliary structures like wing walls, which are prevalent in many real-world applications, have rarely been studied for their impact on morphology. The hydraulic characteristics of steady flow through a boxed culvert are calibrated using a 3D Computational Fluid Dynamics model compared with experimental data in this study, which shows a good agreement between water depth, velocity, and pressure profiles. Test cases showed that 0.015 m grid cells had the lowest NRMSE and MAE values. It is also possible to quantify sediment scour numerically by testing roughness/d50 ratios (cs) and diversion walls at a meander flume outlet. According to the findings, cs = 2.5 indicates a close agreement between numerical and analytical results of maximum scour depth after the culvert; four types of wing walls influence geometrical deformation of the meander flume outlet, resulting in erosion at the concave bank and deposition at the convex bank; two short headwalls are the most appropriate solution for accounting for small changes in morphology. A numerical model can be used to estimate sediment scour at the meander exit channel of hydraulic structures based on the roughness parameter of soil material and headwall type.
When the reactor vessel is penetrated in a severe accident of light water reactor, the molten fuel-coolant interaction including the jet breakup occurs and the jet breakup length becomes one of the important parameters. Most numerical studies on jet breakup process have been carried out using dedicated computer codes. Some researchers are trying to apply commercial CFD codes to their investigations on comprehensive jet breakup process. However, the complexity of the phenomena limits the CFD application only to hydrodynamic aspects. In the present study, numerical analysis of jet breakup under vapor generation is pursued using the STAR-CCM + code. The obtained CFD prediction of the MATE09 experiment shows jet breakup progression patterns consistent to the images taken in the experiment. Further, the predicted positions of leading head, which determine the jet breakup length, are in good agreement with the MATE 09 data. The investigation of hydrodynamic effects on the jet breakup with higher jet velocity results in a stronger shear force and earlier jet breakup process even though there exists the vapor pocket around the corium jet. In future studies, the effect of vapor intensity on the jet breakup length would be investigated further by changing other parameters.
As air pollution becomes more serious due to the increased number of diesel vessel operations, ship regulations on harmful emissions strengthen. Therefore, the development of a diesel exhaust after-treatment system for ships is required, and the higher the flow uniformity of the exhaust treatment system, the higher the treatment efficiency. With the computer software ANSYS Fluent, pressure drop and flow uniformity were used in this study to simulate flow rate with and without a baffle in both a Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC) and Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) system. The system pressure drop was found to be 38 to 40 mbar in the existing system condition, and the flow uniformity was approximately 84 to 92% at the inlet and outlet of the DOC. When the baffle was installed inside the system, the pressure increased and the flow uniformity was lowered due to an increase in flow rate. When the exhaust gas flow was reduced by 50% from $7,548kg\;h^{-1}$ to $3,772kg\;h^{-1}$, the flow uniformity at the inlet and outlet of the DOC increased by approximately 1 to 3% due to the low flow rate. In the case of DPF, the flow uniformity of exhaust gas was 98 to 99% because the uneven flow proceeded after uniformly flowing from the DOC.

In realizing a hydrogen society, it is important to secure the safety of the hydrogen refueling station, which is the facility where consumers can easily meet hydrogen. The hydrogen refueling station consists of compressed gas facilities that store high-pressure hydrogen, and there is a risk that the high-pressure compressed gas facility will rupture due to a fire explosion due to hydrogen leakage in the facility or the influence of surrounding fires. Accordingly, the Korea Gas Safety Corporation is making every effort to find out risk factors from the installation stage, reflect them in the design, and secure safety through legal inspection. In this study, a TNT explosion demonstration test using a protection wall was conducted to confirm the safety effect of the protection wall installed at the hydrogen refueling station, and the empirical test results were compared and verified using FLACS-CFD, a CFD program. As a result of the empirical test and CFD analysis, it was confirmed that the effect of reducing the explosion over-pressure at the rear end of the protection wall decreased from 50% to up to 90% depending on the location, but the effect decreased when it exceeded a certain distance. The results of the empirical test and computer analysis for verifying the safety of the protection wall will be used in proposals for optimizing the protection wall standards in the future.

Developments in the emerging field of Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD), which is made possible by the supercomputer technologies, introduce a new problem of analysing the massive amount of output produced. This problem is common to fields of computational science and engineering. Scientific visualization is to solve this problem by applying advanced technologies of computer graphics. Methods of scientific visualization are studded to visualize calculated flow fields. Different methods of scientific visualization has been surveyed, analysed and compared to select one method, iso-surface. Methods of constructing iso-surfaces from a 3-D data set have been studied. A new algorithm for constructing iso-surfaces has been developed. The algorithm can be classified as one of surface tiling methods. To develope a portable visualization system the international standard PHIGS PLUS and its implementation on X-Window system, PEX, have been selected as the development environment. A prototype of visualization system has been developed. The developed visualization system has been tried to visualize several well-known flow fields.

In this paper, we propose a method to optimize the geometry and installation position of the mixer in the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system by computational fluid dynamic(CFD). Using the commercial CFD software of CFD-ACE+, the flow dynamics of the flue gas was numerically analyzed for improving the injection uniformity of the reduction agent. Numerical analysis of the mixed gas heat flow into the upstream side of the primary SCR catalyst layer was performed when the denitrification facility was operated. The characteristics such as the flow rate, temperature, pressure loss and ammonia concentration of the mixed gas consisting of the flue gas and the ammonia reducing gas were examined at the upstream of the catalyst layer of SCR. The temperature difference on the surface of the catalyst layer is very small compared to the flow rate of the exhaust gas, and the temperature difference caused by the reducing gas hardly occurs because the flow rate of the reducing gas is very small. When the mixed gas is introduced into the SCR reactor, there is a slight tendency toward one wall. When the gas passes through the catalyst layer having a large pressure loss, the flow angle of the exhaust gas changes because the direction of the exhaust gas changes toward a smaller flow. Based on the uniformity of the flow rate of the mixed gas calculated at the SCR, it is judged that the position of the test port reflected in the design is proper.

In this study, the inlet duct and guide vane of the gas floating absorption tower were redesigned to improve the desulfurization efficiency so that the exhaust gas can be uniformly introduced into the absorption tower. In order to reduce the sulfur oxide pollutants among the main sources of air pollutants in industrial boilers, the existing equipment is redesigned and solved. For this purpose, change the exhaust gas, the slurry and recycling the adsorbent to improve the removal efficiency of SOx component in the exhaust gas inside the gas floating absorption tower so as to uniformly contact. And the initial design value and CFD value for the pressure loss from the boiler outlet to the gas floating absorption tower outlet are verified. Also, the velocity distribution of the exhaust gas, the concentration distribution of the recycled adsorbent, the liquid slurry behavior, and the pressure loss were compared. The results confirmed that the desulfurization efficiency was improved because the pressure loss from the boiler outlet to the absorption tower outlet was reduced and the deflection of the exhaust gas was minimized.

The structural design of offshore installations against explosions has been required to protect vital areas (e.g. control room, worker's area etc.) and minimize the damage from explosion accidents. Because the explosion accident will not only result in significant casualties and economic losses, but also cause serious pollution and damage to surrounding environment and coastal marine ecosystems. Over the past two decades, an incredible efforts was made to develop reliable methods to reduce and manage the explosion risk. Among the methods Quantitative Risk Assessment and Management (QRA&M) is the one of cutting-edge technologies. The explosion risk can be quantitatively assessed by the product of explosion frequency based on probability calculation and consequence analyzed using computer simulations, namely Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Finite Element Analysis (FEA). However to obtain reliable consequence analysis results by CFD and FEA, uncertainties associate with modeling and simulation are needed to be identified and validated by comparison with experimental data. Therefore, large-scaled explosion test procedure is developed in this study. And developed test procedure can be helpful to obtain precious test data for the validation of consequence analysis using computer simulations, and subsequently allow better assessment and management of explosion risks.
In this study aerodynamic characteristics of guided gliding type ammunition were investigated by using a computational analysis and wind tunnel test. Missile DATCOM, a semi-empirical method, and a FLUENT, a computational fluid dynamics analysis program, were used for computational analysis. For a guided gliding type ammunition, aerodynamic characteristics were investigated by calculating lift force, drag force, pitching moment and etc. Aerodynamic characteristics of guided gliding type ammunition are completely different from those of conventional ammunition. The results obtained from the computer analysis are similar to those obtained from the wind tunnel test. Although the pitch moment values obtained by the semi-empirical method were slightly different from the wind tunnel test results, the overall computer analysis results showed trends and values similar to the test results. In this study, aerodynamic characteristics of guided gliding type ammunition were identified and it found that semi-empirical method can be applied to analyze the aerodynamic characteristic in the initial design of guided gliding ammunition.

In this study, the design conditions and CFD analysis results are compared and reviewed in SCR that can optimally reduce nitrogen compounds. To this end, it was analyzed and compared using CFD to see if the design criteria were satisfied for the shell and tube areas of the boiler. In the SCR system, the analysis area is the gas/air heat exchanger on the shell side, and eight tubes of the gas/air heat exchanger on the tube side. Through CFD analysis, the gas velocity distribution on the primary catalyst side of the SCR system was designed to be 2.4%, and the NH3/NOx molar ratio distribution was 3.7%, which satisfied the design criteria. In addition, the uniformity of the temperature distribution was confirmed and the required condition of 260℃ or higher was satisfied. The angle of the gas entering the catalyst met the design conditions at 2.9 degrees, and the pressure loss that occurred also satisfied the design requirements. Through this CFD analysis, it was confirmed that it was designed and operated by satisfying the design conditions required for each area.
