The prelaunch thermal transients in the cryogenic oxidizer tank of liquid propulsion rocket subjected to uniform heat flux from outside are numerically analyzed through thermodynamic equations and heat and mass transfer relations. The prelaunch stage is assumed to be composed of five idealized sub-stages including pressurization process by helium gas injection. The Peng-Robinson equation of state is utilized in the lumped analysis of ullage gas. The liquid region is divided into a number of horizontal layers of uniform properties to account for the thermal stratification. The computational result for the typical case shows that the temperature rise of liquid oxidizer is less than 1K and the adsorbed helium into the liquid is approximately 10g.

Supercavitation is a phenomenon in which the cavity covers the entire underwater vehicle. The purpose of this paper is to compare and analyze the thermal effect on the cavity characteristics by changing the ventilated gas temperature through computational analysis. For this study, a homogeneous mixture model based on the 3D Navier-Stokes equation was used. As a phase change model, it is its own code considering both pressure change and temperature change. A dimensionless number Tm was presented to analyze the numerical results, and as the Tm increased, the cavity length increased by about 3.6 times and the cavity width by about 3.3 times at 393.15 K compared to room temperature. Analyzing these thermal effects, it was confirmed that rapid heat exchange and heat transfer between the gas phase and the liquid phase occurred at the location where the ventilated gas was sprayed, affecting the cavity characteristics. In addition, it can be confirmed that the initial cavity surface becomes unstable as the ventilated gas temperature increases, and it can be confirmed based on the numerical analysis results that the critical temperature at which the cavity surface becomes unstable is 373.15 K.

As a turbulence-enhancing device, a mixing vane installed at a spacer grid of the fuel assembly plays a role in improving the convective heat transfer by generating either swirl flow in the subchannels or cross flow between fuel rod gaps. Therefore, both configuration and arrangement pattern of a mixing vane are important factors that determine the performance of a mixing vane. In this study, in order to examine the flow distribution features inside $5{\times}5$ fuel assembly with swirl-type mixing vanes used in benchmark calculation of OECD/NEA, simulations were conducted with commercial CFD software ANSYS CFX R.14. Predicted results were compared to data measured from MATiS-H (Measurement and Analysis of Turbulent Mixing in Subchannels-Horizontal) test facility. In addition, the effect of swirl-type mixing vanes on flow pattern inside the fuel assembly was described.
A multiphase CFD analysis is performed to investigate the effect of near-wall grid for simulating a subcooled boiling flow in vertical tube. The multiphase flow model used in this CFD analysis is the two-fluid model in which liquid(water) and vapor(steam) are considered as continuous and dispersed fluids, respectively. A wall boiling model is also used to simulate the subcooled boiling heat transfer at the heated wall boundary. The diameter and heated length of tube are 0.0154 m and 2 m, respectively. The system pressure in tube is 4.5 MPa and the inlet subcooling is 60 K. The near-wall grid size in the non-dimensional wall unit ($y_{w}^{+}$) was examined from 64 to 172 at the outlet boundary. The CFD calculations predicted the void distributions as well as the liquid and wall temperatures in tube. The predicted axial variations of the void fraction and the wall temperature are compared with the measured ones. The CFD prediction of the wall temperature is shown to slightly depend on the near-wall grid size but the axial void prediction has somewhat large dependency. The CFD prediction was found to show a better agreement with the measured one for the large near-wall grid, e.g., $y_{w}^{+}$ > 100.
In manufacturing optical fibers, the process starts with the glass fiber drawing from the heated and softened silica preform in the furnace, and the freshly drawn glass fiber is still at high temperature when it leaves the glass fiber drawing furnace. It is necessary to cool down the glass fiber to the ambient temperature before it then enters the fiber coating applicator, since the hot glass fiber is known to cause several technical difficulties in achieving high quality fiber coating. As the fiber drawing speed keeps increasing, a current manufacturing of optical fibers requires a dedicated cooling unit with helium gas injection. A series of three-dimensional flow and heat transfer computations are carried out to investigate the effectiveness of fiber cooling in the fiber cooling unit. The glass fiber cooling unit is simplified into the long cylindrical enclosure at which the hot glass fiber passes through at high speed, and the helium is being supplied through several injection slots of rectangular shape along the cooling unit. This study presents and discusses the effects of helium injection rates on the glass fiber cooling rates.
Objective of this study is to compare the inherent characteristics of natural convection flow inside the canister of spent fuel dry storage system with different backfill gases by utilizing computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code. Four working fluids were selected for comparison study. Helium currently used backfill gas for canister, air, nitrogen, and argon are frequently used as coolant in many heat transfer applications. The results indicate that helium has very distinct conductive behavior and show very weak natural convective flow compared to the others. Argon showed the strongest natural convective flow but also the worst coolability. Air and nitrogen showed similar characteristics to each other. However, due to difference in Prandtl number, nitrogen showed more effective natural convective flow. These results suggest that experimental validation for the nitrogen is needed to investigate the potential coolability other than currently commercially used helium.
The wire-wrapped fuel bundle is an assembly design in a sodium-cooled fast reactor. A wire spacer is used to maintain a constant gap between rods and to enhance the mixing of coolants. The wire makes the flow complicated by creating a sweeping flow and vortex flow. The vortex affects the flow field and heat transfer inside the subchannels. However, studies on vortices in this geometry are limited. The purpose of this research is to investigate the vortex flow created in the wire-wrapped fuel bundle. For analysis, a RANS-based numerical analysis was conducted for a 37-pin geometry. The sensitivity study shows that simulation with the shear stress transport model is appropriate. For the case of Re of 37,100, the mechanisms of onset, periodicity, and rotational direction were analyzed. The vortex structures were reconstructed in a three-dimensional space. Vortices were periodically created in the interior subchannel three times for one wire rotation. In the edge subchannel, the largest vortex occurred. This large vortex structure blocked the swirl flow in the peripheral region. The small vortex formed in the corner subchannel was negligible. The results can help in understanding the flow field inside subchannels with sweeping flow and vortex structures.

Since the numerical analysis was adopted in the mold design, lots of computational methods have been proposed for the simulations of casting processes for the various shaped molds. Today, it is possible to simulate the filling and solidification processes of most casts using the VOF technique. Though the three-dimensional numerical model based on the Cartesian coordinate system can be applied to any shape of cast, it becomes very inefficient when the three-dimensional model is applied to the cast of axi-symmetrical shape since the control volume includes at least 11 of the physical model. In addition, the more meshes should be distributed along the circumferential boundaries of curved shape in the Cartesian coordinate system fur the better results, while such curved circumferential boundary does not need to be considered in the two-dimensional cylindrical coordinate system. This motivates the present study i.e. developing a two-dimensional numerical model for the axi-symmetrically shaped casts. The SIMPLER algorithm, the VOF method, and the equivalent specific heat method have been adopted in the combined algorithm for the flow calculation, the free surface tracking, and the phase change heat transfer, respectively. The numerical model has been applied to the casting process of a pulley, and it was proven that the mesh and time effective calculation was accomplished comparing to the calculation using three-dimensional model.

Natural gas hydrates are newly emerging as an environment-friendly source of energy to substitute for fossil fuels in the 21stcentury.NGHs are reported to holds much amounts of natural gas (up to 182 standard volumes of gas per volume of hydrate); they are easy to store and safe to carry at about minus 20 degree Celsius under atmospheric pressure because of the self-preservation phenomenon of gas hydrates. The transporting method by gas-ice-hydrate ship carriers has been introduced and developed by a variety of industry and research institutions. Our team has been conducted to develop NGH total systems, including a breakthrough NGH carrier for sea transportation, since 2011. The NGH pellet carrier does not require a separate cooling system for cargo, and the initial temperature is maintained through insulation of the cargo tanks throughout the transport to the final destination. The heat conducted from the exterior and passing through the insulation material of the hull should be cut off as much as possible, but heat inflow inside the cargo tank from an external source is inevitable during transport. In this study, the heat transfer in a cargo tank of a 115K NGH carrier was analyzed through simulation with a commercial CFD code to estimate the boil-off gas/boil-off rate on the developed carrier and understand major hazards that could significantly impact the safety of the vessel.

We compare the predicted results with measured data obtained from the MATiS-H (Measurement and Analysis of Turbulent Mixing in Subchannels-Horizontal) test facility. In addition, we discuss the effect of the split-type mixing vanes on the flow pattern inside the fuel assembly.
