  • This paper describes the analysis, design, and silicon-fabrication of a fluidic proportional amplifier, which is the most important element of fluidic logic circuits. First, FEM(finite element method) analyses were performed, using the Fluent computational fluid dynamics program, and design geometries were optimized. Then, a $40\;{\mu}m$-deep amplifier was fabricated in silicon using anisotropic dry etching.

Fluidic Thrust Vector Control Using Shock Wave Concept (충격파 개념에 기반한 유체 추력벡터제어에 관한 연구)

  • Recently, fluidic thrust vector control has become a core technique to control multifarious air vehicles, such as supersonic aircraft and modern rockets. Fluidic thrust vector control using the shock vector concept has many advantages for achieving great vectoring performance, such as fast vectoring response, simple structure, and low weight. In this paper, computational fluid dynamics methods are used to study a three-dimensional rectangular supersonic nozzle with a slot injector. To evaluate the reliability and stability of computational methodology, the numerical results were validated with experimental data. The pressure distributions along the upper and lower nozzle walls in the symmetry plane showed an excellent match with the test results. Several numerical simulations were performed based on the shear stress transport(SST) $k-{\omega}$ turbulence model. The effect of the momentum flux ratio was investigated thoroughly, and the performance variations have been clearly illustrated.

Study on Fluidic Thrust Vector Control Based on Dual-Throat Concept (이중목 노즐 개념에 기반한 유체 추력벡터제어에 관한 연구)

  • Numerical simulations were carried out in a supersonic nozzle to investigate the possibility of using dual-throat nozzle concept in fluidic thrust vector control. Validation of the methodology showed an excellent agreement between the computational fluid dynamics results and the experimental data available, which were based on the well-assessed SST $k-{\omega}$ turbulence mode. The deflection angle, system resultant thrust ratio, and thrust efficiency were investigated in a wide range of nozzle pressure ratios and injection pressure ratios. The performance variations of the dual-throat nozzle thrust vector control system were clearly illustrated with this two-dimensional computational domain. Some constructive conclusions were obtained that may be used as a reference for further studies in the fluidic thrust vector control field.

  • Thrust Vectoring is a dynamic feature that offers many benefits in terms of maneuverability and control effectiveness. Thrust vectoring capabilities make the satisfaction of take-off and landing requirements easier. Moreover, it can be a valuable control effector at low dynamic pressures, where traditional aerodynamic controls are less effective. A numerical investigation of Fluidic Thrust Vectoring (FTV) is completed to evaluate the use of fluidic injection to manipulate flow separation and cause thrust vectoring of the primary jet thrust. The methodology presented is general and can be used to study different techniques of fluidic thrust vectoring like shock-vector control, sonic-plane skewing and counterflow methods. For validation purposes the method will focus on the dual-throat nozzle concept. Internal nozzle performances and thrust vector angles were computed for several range of nozzle pressure ratios and fluidic injection flow rate. The numerical results obtained are compared with the analogues experimental data reported in the scientific literature. The model is integrated using a finite volume discretization of the compressible URANS equations coupled with a Spalart-Allmaras turbulence model. Second order accuracy in space and time is achieved using an ENO scheme.

Topology optimization on vortex-type passive fluidic diode for advanced nuclear reactors

  • The vortex-type fluidic diode (FD) is a key safety component for inherent safety in various advanced reactors such as the sodium fast reactor (SFR) and the molten salt reactor (MSR). In this study, topology optimization is conducted to optimize the design of the vortex-type fluidic diode. The optimization domain is simplified to 2-dimensional geometry for a tangential port and chamber. As a result, a design with a circular chamber and a restrictor at the tangential port is obtained. To verify the new design, experimental study and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis were conducted for inlet Reynolds numbers between 2000 and 6000. However, the results show that the performance of the new design is no better than the original reference design. To analyze the cause of this result, detailed analysis is performed on the velocity and pressure field using flow visualization experiments and 3-D CFD analysis. The results show that the discrepancy between the optimization results in 2-D and the experimental results in 3-D originated from exclusion of an important pressure loss contributor in the optimization process. This study also concludes that the junction design of the axial port and chamber offers potential for improvement of fluidic diode performance.

Computational Investigation of the Thermal Performances of Polymer Heat Sinks Passively-Cooled by Seawater for Thermoelectric Waste Heat Recovery (열전폐열회수를 위해 수동적으로 해수냉각되는 폴리머 히트싱크 열성능의 수치적 연구)

  • This study computationally explored the thermal performance of passively-cooled polymer heat sinks utilizing seawater. Polymer heat sinks are proposed as cooling modules of the cold sides of thermoelectric generators for waste heat recovery. 3-D Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modelling was conducted for a detailed numerical study. Polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) and pyrolytic graphite (PG) were selected for the base materials of polymer heat sinks. The computational study evaluated the performance of the PPS and PG heat sinks at various fin numbers and fin thicknesses. Their performances were compared with those of aluminum (Al) and titanium (Ti) heat sinks. The study results showed that the thermal performance of the PG heat sink was 3~4 times better than that of the Ti heat sink. This might be due mainly to the better heat spreading of the PG heat sink than the Ti heat sink. The effect of the number of fins on the performance of the PG heat sink was dissimilar to the cases of the PPS and Ti heat sinks. This result can be explained by the interrelationships among heat spreading, surface area enhancement, and fluidic resistance incorporating with an increase in the number of fins.

  • Recently, several advanced flow visualization techniques such as Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) including stereo PIV, holographic PIV, and dynamic PIV have been developed. These advanced techniques have strong potential as the experimental technology which can be used for verifying numerical simulation. In addition, there would be indispensable in solving complicated thermo-fluid flow problems not only in the industrial fields such as automotive, space, electronics, aero- and hydro-dynamics, steel, and information engineering, but also in the basic research fields of medical science, bio-medical engineering, environmental and energy engineering etc. Especially, NT Nano Technology) and BT (Bio Technology) strongly demand these advanced measurement techniques, because it is difficult for conventional methods to observe most complicated nano- and bio-fluidic phenomena. In this paper, the basic principle of these advanced visualization techniques and their practical applications which cannot be resolved by conventional methods, such as flow in automotive HVAC system, ship and propeller wake, three-dimensional flow measurement in micro-conduits, and flow around a circulating cylinder will be introduced.

  • In this study, we investigate the non-reacting and reacting performance of single nozzle for post H class gas turbine by using commercial CFD tool, CONVERGE, based on adaptive mesh refinement. By varying swirl number and mixing length of base nozzle design. Through the numerical analysis, basic phenomena can be well described with respect to fuel concentration for non-reacting flow, temperature distribution, velocity vector and combustion outlet temperature distribution for reacting flow. However, there are rooms for improvements in model accuracy by comparing test results. Comparison between numerical analysis are planning for further study.

  • In this paper, a parallel analysis algorithm for Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH), one of the numerical methods for fluidic materials, is introduced. SPH, which is a meshless method, can represent the behavior of a continuum using a particle-based approach, but it demands substantial computational resources. Therefore, parallel analysis algorithms are essential for SPH simulations. The domain decomposition algorithm, which divides the computational domain into partitions to be independently analyzed, is the most representative method among parallel analysis algorithms. In Discrete Element Method (DEM) and Molecular Dynamics (MD), the Cartesian coordinate-based domain decomposition method is popularly used because it offers advantages in quickly and conveniently accessing particle positions. However, in SPH, it is important to share particle information among partitioned domains because SPH particles are defined based on information from nearby particles within the smoothing length. Additionally, maintaining CPU load balance is crucial. In this study, a highly parallel efficient algorithm is proposed to dynamically minimize the size of orthogonal domain partitions to prevent excess CPU utilization. The efficiency of the proposed method was validated through numerical analysis models. The parallel efficiency of the proposed method is evaluated for up to 30 CPUs for fluidic models, achieving 90% parallel efficiency for up to 28 physical cores.
