Model ice forming process in ice tank needs several steps of seeding, freezing, tempering. In those process, one of the most important factors to affect the accuracy of experiment is the homogeneity of the ice thickness and the temperature. This paper investigated a computational and statistical method to assess the uniformity of the model ice. In addition, the different configurations of freezing systems were considered to improve the uniformity. Qualitative assessment using streamlines from the cooling units was carried out by computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and the quantitative evaluations of the homogeneity were compared using the temperature distribution on the ice surface. In addition, multi species transport analysis is introduced to understand the circulation efficiency of cold air from the cooling units. As the results, optimized configurations were determined by adjusting the angles of vane in the cooling units.
An optimal shape design approach is presented for a subsonic S-shaped intake using aerodynamic sensitivity analysis. Two-equation turbulence model is employed to capture strong counter vortices in the S-shaped duct more precisely. Sensitivity analysis is performed for the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations coupled with two-equation turbulence models using a discrete adjoint method For code validation, the result of the flow solver is compared with experiment data and other computational results of bench marking test. To study the influence oj turbulence models and grid refinement on the duct flow analysis, the results from several turbulence models are compared with one another and the minimum number of grid points, which can yield an accurate solution is investigated The adjoint variable code is validated by comparing the complex step derivative results. To realize a sufficient and flexible design space, NURBS equations are introduced as a geometric representation and a new grid modification technique, Least Square NURBS Grid Approximation is applied With the verified flow solver, the sensitivity analysis code and the geometric modification technique, the optimization of S-shaped intake is carried out and the enhancement of overall intake performance is achieved The designed S-shaped duct is tested in several off-design conditions to confirm the robustness of the current design approach. As a result, the capability and the efficiency of the present design tools are successfully demonstrated in three-dimensional highly turbulent internal flow design and off-design conditions.
Vortex tube is a thermal static device that separates compressed air into hot and cold streams. In general, the cooling efficiency of vortex tubes is lower than that of traditional air conditioning equipment and vortex tubes are mainly used for industrial spot cooling applications because of their quick responses. In this study, conical frustums are employed in the nozzle chamber to improve the cooling performance. Conical frustums can be used to decrease the ineffective mass fraction that directly passes through the cold exit without energy separation. The shape optimization of conical frustums has been performed using full factorial design. It is found that the height of frustums has the largest main effects on the cooling performance. Computational results show that the cooling performance can be increased by about 10% within the considered range of the design parameters. This is because the ineffective mass fraction toward the cold exit is decreased by about 20%.

The concept of criterion function is proposed as a framework for comparing the geometric and computational characteristics of various nonlinear programming approaches to linear programming such as the method of centers, Karmakar's algorithm and the gravitational method. Also, we discuss various computational issues involved in obtaining an efficient parallel implementation of these methods. Clearly, the most time consuming part in solving a linear programming problem is the direction finding procedure, where we obtain an improving direction. In most cases, finding an improving direction is equivalent to solving a simple optimization problem defined at the current feasible solution. Again, this simple optimization problem can be seen as a least squares problem, and the computational effort in solving the least squares problem is, in fact, same as the effort as in solving a system of linear equations. Hence, getting a solution to a system of linear equations fast is very important in solving a linear programming problem efficiently. For solving system of linear equations on parallel computing machines, an iterative method seems more adequate than direct methods. Therefore, we propose one possible strategy for getting an efficient parallel implementation of an iterative method for solving a system of equations and present the summary of computational experiment performed on transputer based parallel computing board installed on IBM PC.

The three-dimensional fluid motion through the intake port and cylinder of a single DOHC SI engine was investigated with a commercial computational fluid dynamics simulation program, STAR-CD. This domain includes the intake port, intake valves and combustion chamber. Steady induction port flows for various valve lifts have been simulated for an actual engine configuration. The geometry was obtained by direct interface with a three-dimensional CAD software for complicated port and valve shape. The computational grid was generated using the commercial preprocessor ICEM CFD/CAE. Detailed procedures were presented on the generation of the geometry and the block-structured mesh. A standard k-${\varepsilon}$ turbulent model was applied to consider the complexity of the geometry and the fluid motion. The global flow patterns and the distributions of various quantities, such as pressure, velocity magnitude around the valve seat etc., were examined. The computational results, such as mass flow rate, discharge coefficient etc., for various valve lifts were compard with the experimental results and the computational results were found in good agreement with the experiment.

Elementary students are studying software training to teach coding education using text-based languages such as Python. In general, these higher-level languages support learning activities in combination with a kits for physical computing or various programming languages, in contrast to block-coding programming languages. In this study, we conducted a coding project based on computational thinking using the ARCS model to overcome the difficulties of text-based language. The results of the experiment show that students are generally confident and interested in programming. Especially, the understanding of repetition, function, and object was high in the change of computational thinking power, so this trend is believed to be due to the use of text-based languages and the Python module.

Marine accidents due to a loss of stability, have been gradually increasing over the last decade. Measures must be taken on the roll reduction of a ship. Amongst the measures, building an anti-roll tank in a ship is recognized as the most simple and effective way to reduce the roll motion. Therefore, this study aims to develop a computational model for a U-tube type anti-roll tank and to validate it by experiment. In particular, to validate the developed computational model, the height of the free surface in the tank was measured in the experiment. To develop a computational model, the mesh dependency test was carried out. Further, the effects of a turbulence model, time step size, and the number of iterations on the numerical solution were analyzed. In summary, a U-tube type anti-roll tank simulation had to be performed accurately with conditions of a realizable k-𝜖 turbulence model, 10-2s time step size, and 15 iterations. In validation, the two cases of measured data from the experiment were compared with the numerical results. In the present study, STAR-CCM+ (ver. 17.02), a RANS-based commercial solver was used.

In the present paper, the impact damage behavior of steel plate reinforced concrete panels exposed to shock impulsive loading and fragment impact loading is investigated. To evaluate the retrofit performance of a steel-strengthened concrete panels, a numerical experiment using a numerical simulation with AUTODYN, an explicit analysis program is introduced because a real explosion experiment requires the vast investment and expense for facilities as well as the deformation mechanisms are too complicated to be reproduced with a conventional closed-form analyses. The model for the analysis is simplified and idealized as a two-dimensional and axisymmetric case controled with geometry, boundary condition and material properties in order to obtain a resonable computation time. As a result of the analysis, panels subject to either shock loading or fragment loading without the steel plate reinforcement experience the perforation with spalled fragments. In addition, the panels reinforced with steel plate can prevent the perforation and provide the good mechanical effect such as the increase of global stiffness and strength through the composite action between the concrete slab and the steel plate.
The hydraulic performance analysis of a pump system composed of an inducer and impeller for the application on turbopumps has been performed using three-dimensional Wavier-Stokes equations. A simple mixing-plane method and a full interaction method are used to simulate inducer/impeller interactions. The computations adopting two methods show almost similar results due to the weak interaction between the inducer and impeller since the inducer outlet blade angle is rather small. But, because the inducer and the impeller are closely spaced near the shroud region at the interface, flow angles at the impeller inlet show different results between two methods. Thus, the full interaction method predicted about $2\%$ higher pump performance than the mixing-plane method. And the effects of prewhirl at the impeller inlet are also investigated. As the inlet flow angle is increased, the head rise and the efficiency are decreased. The computational results are compared with experimental ones. The computational results at the design point show good agreements with experimental data. But the computation was found to under-predict the head rise at high mass flow rates compared to the experiment, further study must be followed in terms of the computation and experiment.
The delivery system such as sprue, runner and gate is a waste of resin in injection molding operation. In this study the reduction of runner size has been investigated using injection molding CAE softwares, Moldflow and Moldex3D, and commercial CFD Softwares, Fluent and Polyflow. To verify the computational results experiment was performed. There were three considerations in deciding optimal runner size in this study: minimum pressure at the gate that makes resin fully filled in the cavity, minimum runner size that compensates shrinkage of resin in the cavity, and frozen layer thickness formed in the runner during injection. Through the computer simulations the optimal runner size that satisfies those three considerations has been decided. Although the computational results among the softwares were slightly different, it was enough to predict the optimal runner size. The previous runner diameter was 8 mm and predicted optimal size was 5 mm. This was verified by injection molding experiment. Thus, the way of CAE application in deciding optimal runner size adapted in this study would be appropriated.
