This paper reports on a comprehensive study on the mechanical properties of expansive fiber-reinforced strainhardening cement composite (SHCC) materials containing various replacement levels (0, 8, 10, 12 and 14%) of an expansive admixture and 1.5% polyethylene (PE) fibers volume fraction. A number of experimental tests were conducted to investigate shrinkage, compressive strength, flexural strength, and direct tension behavior. Test results show that as expected, the different replacement levels of an expansive admixture have an important effect on the evolution of the free shrinkage of SHCC with a rich mixture. At the volume fraction of 1.5%, PE fibers in normal SHCC reduce free shrinkage deformation by about 30% in comparison to plain mortar. The replacement of an expansive admixture in SHCC material has led the SHCC to a better initial cracking behavior. Enhanced cracking tendency improved mechanical properties of SHCC materials with rich mixtures. Note that an increase in the replacement of expansive admixture from 10% to 14% does not lead to a significant improvement for mechanical properties; this implies that the replacement of 10% expansive admixture is sufficient.

In this study, the design method of the combined sheet pile was considered in the coastal landfill where sandy and clayey soils are mixed, and the behavior in excavation was analyzed. It was confirmed from the elasto-plastic analysis that the predicted behavior of the temporary facilities of earth retaining differs according to the type of the combined sheet pile method (Built up, Interlocking, Welding) and the analysis method (soldier pile method, continuous wall method). In the case of sheet pile member force, the results of the continuous wall analysis method predicted the most conservative results. When the stress ratio (calculation/allowance) of each member was analyzed based on the maximum member force of the combined sheet pile method, the maximum value was obtained for bending moment in the side pile and combined stress in the case of the strut. As a result of finite element analysis, the member force of the side pile was the largest in the short-term effective stress analysis condition, while the compressive force of the strut was large in the consolidation analysis. When comparing the results of the elasto-plastic analysis and the finite element analysis, the shear force of the side pile and the axial force of the strut were greatly evaluated in the elasto-plastic analysis, and the bending moment of the side pile was the largest in the short-term effective stress condition of the finite element analysis. In addition, the displacement of the side pile was predicted to be greater in the finite element analysis than in the elasto-plastic analysis.
This paper is a report about lap splice performance of rebar embedded in the strain-hardening cement-based composites (SHCCs) under monotonic and repeated tension loading. Ten mix proportions of cement-based composites such as SHCCs and normal concrete were investigated. The study parameters are comprised of (1) types of reinforcing fibers (polyethylene and steel fiber), (2) replacement levels of expansive admixture (EXA, 0% and 10%), and (3) compressive strength (30 and 100 MPa) of cement-based composites. Lap splice lengths (ld) of rebars in SHCC materials and normal concrete were 60% and 100% of splice length calculated by code requirements for structural concrete, respectively. Test results indicated that SHCCs materials can lead to enhancements in the lap splice performance of embedded rebar. All of the fiber reinforcement conditions (PE-SHCC and PESF-SHCC) considered in this study produced considerable improvements in the tensile strength, cracking behavior, and bond strength of lap-spliced rebar. Furthermore, adding EXA to SHCC matrix improved the tensile lap splice performance of rebar in SHCC materials. However, for controlling crack behavior, the performance of PE-SHCC was better than that of PESF-SHCC due to its mechanical properties. This study demonstrated an effective approach for reducing required development length of lap spliced rebar by using SHCC materials.
The structural behavior of continuous reinforced concrete deep beams is mainly controlled by the mechanical relationships associated with the shear span-to-effective depth ratio, flexural reinforcement ratio, load and support conditions, and material properties. In this study, a simple indeterminate strut-tie model which reflects characteristics of the complicated structural behavior of the continuous deep beams is presented. In addition, the reaction and load distribution ratios defined as the fraction of load carried by an exterior support of continuous deep beam and the fraction of load transferred by a vertical truss mechanism, respectively, are proposed to help structural designers for the analysis and design of continuous reinforced concrete deep beams by using the strut-tie model approaches of current design codes. In the determination of the load distribution ratio, a concept of balanced shear reinforcement ratio requiring a simultaneous failure of inclined concrete strut and vertical steel tie is introduced to ensure a ductile shear failure of reinforced concrete deep beams, and the primary design variables including the shear span-to-effective depth ratio, flexural reinforcement ratio, and concrete compressive strength are implemented after thorough parametric numerical analyses. In the companion paper, the validity of the presented model and load distribution ratio was examined by applying them in the evaluation of the ultimate strength of multiple continuous reinforced concrete deep beams, which were tested to failure.
The present investigation evaluates the flexural behavior of pre-tensioned lightweight concrete beams under two-point symmetrical concentrated loads according to the variation of the partial prestressing ratio and the effective prestress of prestressing strands. The designed compressive strength of the lightweight concrete with a dry density of 1,770 $kg/m^3$ was 35 MPa. The deformed bar with a yield strength of 383 MPa and three-wire mono-strands with tensile strength of 2,040 MPa were used for longitudinal tensile reinforcement and prestressing steel reinforcement, respectively. According to the test results, the flexural capacity of pre-tensioned lightweight concrete beams increased with the increase of the partial prestressing ratio and was marginally influenced by the effective prestress of strands. With the same reinforcing index, the normalized flexural capacity of pre-tensioned lightweight concrete beams was similar to that of pre-tensioned normal-weight concrete beams tested by Harajli and Naaman and Bennett. On the other hand, the displacement ductility ratio of pre-tensioned lightweight concrete beams increased with the decrease of the partial prestressing ratio and with the increase of the effective prestress of strands. The load-displacement relationship of pre-tensioned lightweight concrete beam specimens can be suitably predicted by the developed non-linear two-dimensional analysis procedure. In addition, the flexural cracking moment and flexural capacity of pre-tensioned lightweight concrete beams can be conservatively evaluated using the elasticity theorem and the approach specified in ACI 318-08, respectively.
This paper presents the test results on the shear performance of large-size reinforced concrete beams using recycled fine aggregate to evaluate its applicability to structural concrete. The performance of these beams is compared to that of similar beams casted with natural coarse and fine aggregates. All of the beam specimens without shear reinforcement had $400mm{\times}600mm$ rectangular cross section and a shear span ratio (a/d) of 5.0. Five concrete mixtures with different replacement levels of recycled fine aggregates (0, 30, 60, 70 and 100%) were used to obtain a nominal concrete compressive strength of 28MPa. The test results of load-deflection curve, shear deformation, diagonal cracking load, crack pattern, ultimate shear strength, and failure mode are examined and compared. In addition, code and empirical equations from KCI, JSCE, CSA, Zsutty, and MCFT were considered to evaluate the applicability of these equations for predicting shear strength of reinforced concrete beam with recycled fine aggregate. The results showed that the overall shear behavior of reinforced concrete beams incorporating less than 60% recycled fine aggregate was comparable with that of conventional concrete beam. The MCFT gave good prediction and other code equations were conservative in predicting the shear strength of the tested beams. The beam specimens with replacement of 70 and 100% of natural fine aggregates by recycled fine aggregates showed different failure mode than other tested beams.
Ultra-high performance fiber-reinforced concrete (UHPFRC) is characterized by a post-cracking residual tensile strength with a large tensile strain as well as a high compressive strength. To determine a material tensile strength of UHPFRC, three-point loading test on notched prism and direct tensile test on doubly notched plate were compared and then the design tensile strength is decided. Shear tests on nine I-shaped beams with varied types of fiber volume ratio, shear span ratio and size effect were conducted to investigate shear behavior in web. From the test results, the stress redistribution ability represented as diagonal cracked zone was quantified by inclination of principal stress in web. The test results shows that the specimens were capable of resistance to shear loading without stirrup in a range of large deformation and the strength increase with post-cracking behavior is stable. However at the ultimate state all test specimens failed as a crack localization in the damaged zone and the shear strength of specimens is affected by shear span ratio and effective depth. Strength predictions show that the existing recommendations should be modified considering shear span ratio and effective depth as design parameters.
The aluminum 7075-T6 is known as an alloy widely used in aircraft structural applications, which does not exhibit strain rate sensitivity during dynamic compressive tests. Despite mechanical importance of the material, there is not enough attention to determine appropriate sample dimensions such as a sample diameter relative to the device bar diameter and sample length to diameter (L/D) ratio for dynamic tests and how these two parameters can change mechanical behaviors of the sample under dynamic loading condition. In this study, various samples which have different diameters of 31.8, 25.4, 15.9, and 9.5 mm and sample L/D ratios of 2.0, 1.5, 1.0, 0.5, and 0.25 were tested using Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB), as this testing device is proper to characterize mechanical behaviors of solid materials at high strain rates. The mechanical behavior of this alloy was examined under ${\sim}200-5,500s^{-1}$ dynamic strain rate. Aluminum samples of 2.0, 1.5 and 1.0 of L/D ratios were well fitted into the stress-strain curve, Madison and Green's diagram, regardless of the sample diameters. Also, the 0.5 and 0.25 L/D ratio samples having the diameter of 31.8 and 25.4 mm followed the stress-strain curve. As results, larger samples (31.8 and 25.4 mm) in diameters followed the stress-strain curve regardless of the L/D ratios, whereas the 0.5 and 0.25 L/D ratios of small diameter sample (15.9 and 9.5 mm) did not follow the stress-strain diagram but significantly deviate from the diagram. Our results indicate that the L/D ratio is important determinant in stress-strain responses under the SHPB test when the sample diameter is small relative to the test bar diameter (31.8 mm), but when sample diameter is close to the bar diameter, L/D ratio does not significantly affect the stress-strain responses. This suggests that the areal mismatch (non-contact area of the testing bar) between the sample and the bar can misrepresent mechanical behaviors of the aluminum 7075-T6 at the dynamic loading condition.
In this paper, it has been studied about the CRCO to maintain or rehabilitate the aged JCP. The CRCO and JCO was constructed at useless section of Seo-Hae-Ahn express highway in South Korea. The performance evaluation was conducted. Especially, it was focused on the roll of longitudinal reinforced steels inserted into the CRCO. On crack survey results from field construction section, the reflection cracks at joint of the existing pavement occurred in CRCO. However, due to the constraints of longitudinal reinforced steels, crack width was small. Total crack length and quantity in the CRCO more than that in the JCO. And crack spacing in the CRCO was narrower than it in the CRCP. Through the bonding strength test results, if the cold milling and cleaning as well as surface treatment is applied, there will be no debonding problem at interlayer in the early age. From analysis of the horizontal behavior at the joint, the longitudinal reinforced steels constrained crack width which became wider than initial state over time. Also, that steel in the CRCO reduced the horizontal movement due to temperature variation(4 times than that in the JCO). But, if interface is debonded, the roll decreased. Vertical VWG data showed that CRCO did not occur debonding problem at steel location, but there was some problem in JCO. It was confirmed by field coring. The tensile strain appeared in the CRCO, But the compressive strain occurred in the JCO in early age. Through the FWD test result, deflection in the CRCO was less than that in the JCO. And K value in the CRCO was greater than it in the JCO.
Torsional behavior of concrete pavement slabs due to temperature and moisture effects is constrained by self weight and friction etc, and causes stress as the result. The stress due to humidity variation in the slab is difficult to calculate while that due to temperature variation can easily be calculated by a commercial structural analysis program. Thus, the slab behavior can be predicted more accurately if the humidity effect is converted to equivalent temperature and is used as an input of structural analysis. In this study, a concrete pavement slab was constructed and strains of the slab due to environmental loadings were measured for long-term period. Thermal strains were subtracted from the measured strains by using thermal expansion coefficient of the concrete measured in a laboratory. Shrinkage strains, the remained strains, was supposed as additional thermal strains to calculate imaginary temperature with equivalent effect of the shrinkage by dividing the shrinkage with the thermal expansion coefficient. An existing shrinkage model was modified by considering the self weight and friction to be used in another model which can convert differential shrinkage between top and bottom of the slab to equivalent temperature difference. Addition research efforts on tensile stress reduction according to steady increase in the compressive strains are warranted for more accurate stress calculation.
