  • A type of hybrid core made up of thin-walled square carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) honeycomb and Polymethacrylimide (PMI) foam fillers was proposed and prepared. Numerical model of the core under quasi static compression was established and validated by corresponding experimental results. The compressive properties of the core with different configurations were analyzed through numerical simulations. The effect of the geometrical parameters and foam fillers on the compressive response and energy absorption of the core were analyzed. The results show that the PMI foam fillers can significantly improve the compressive strength and energy absorption capacity of the square CFRP honeycomb. The geometrical parameters have marked effects on the compressive properties of the core. The research can give a reference for the application of PMI foam materials in energy absorbing structures and guide the design and optimization of lightweight and energy efficient cores of sandwiches.

  • In this paper, an experimental study was conducted on the compressive behavior of steel tube confined concrete (STCC) and concrete-filled steel tube (CFST) columns with active and passive confinement. To create active confinement in the STCC and CFST specimens, an innovative method was used in this study, in which by applying pressure on the fresh concrete, the steel tube was laterally pretensioned and the concrete core was compressed simultaneously. Of the benefits of this technique are improving the composite column behavior, without the use of additives and without the need for vibration, and achieving high prestressing levels. To achieve lower and higher prestressing levels, short and long term pressures were applied to the specimens, respectively. Nineteen STCC and CFST specimens in three groups of passive, short-term active, and long-term active confinement were subjected to axial compression, and their mechanical properties including the compressive strength, modulus of elasticity and axial strain were evaluated. The results showed that the proposed method of prestressing the STCC columns led to a significant increase in the compressive strength (about 60%), initial modulus of elasticity (about 130%) as well as a significant reduction in the axial strain (about 45%). In the CFST columns, the prestressing led to a considerable increase in the compressive strength, a small effect on the initial and secant modulus of elasticity and an increase in the axial strain (about 55%). Moreover, increased prestressing levels negligibly affected the compressive strength of STCCs and CFSTs but slightly increased the elastic modulus of STCCs and significantly decreased that of CFSTs.

  • The use of optimum content of supplementary cementing materials (SCMs) such as limestone filler (LF) to blend with Portland cement has been resulted in many environmental and technical advantages, such as increase in physical properties, enhancement of sustainability in concrete industry and reducing $CO_2$ emission are well known. Artificial neural networks (ANNs) have been already applied in civil engineering to solve a wide variety of problems such as the prediction of concrete compressive strength. The feed forward back propagation (FFBP) algorithm and Tan-sigmoid transfer function were used for the ANNs training in this study. The training, testing and validation of data during the backpropagation training process yielded good correlations exceeding 97%. A parametric study was conducted to study the sensitivity of the developed model to certain essential parameters affecting the compressive strength of concrete. The effects and benefits of limestone filler on hardened properties of the concrete such as compressive strength were well established endorsing previous results in the literature. The results of this study revealed that the proposed ANNs model showed a high performance as a feasible and highly efficient tool for simulating the LF concrete compressive strength prediction.

  • In this paper the possibility of using different regression models to predict the mechanical properties of limestone concrete after exposure to high temperatures, based on the results of non-destructive techniques, that could be easily used in-situ, is discussed. Extensive experimental work was carried out on limestone concrete mixtures, that differed in the water to cement (w/c) ratio, the type of cement and the quantity of superplasticizer added. After standard curing, the specimens were exposed to various high temperature levels, i.e., 200℃, 400℃, 600℃ or 800℃. Before heating, the reference mechanical properties of the concrete were determined at ambient temperature. After the heating process, the specimens were cooled naturally to ambient temperature and tested using non-destructive techniques. Among the mechanical properties of the specimens after heating, known also as the residual mechanical properties, the residual modulus of elasticity, compressive and flexural strengths were determined. The results show that residual modulus of elasticity, compressive and flexural strengths can be reliably predicted using an artificial neural network approach based on ultrasonic pulse velocity, residual surface strength, some mixture parameters and maximal temperature reached in concrete during heating.

  • Supplementary cementitious materials (SCM) have turned out to be a vital portion of extraordinary strength and performance concrete. Metakaolin (MK) is one of SCM material is acquired by calcinations of kaolinite. Universally utilised as pozzolanic material in concrete to enhance mechanical and durability properties. This study investigates the fresh and hardened properties of conventional concrete (CC) and self compacting concrete (SCC) by partially replacing cement with MK in diverse percentages. In CC and SCC, partial replacement of cement with MK varies from 5-20%. Fresh concrete properties of CC are conducted by slump test and compaction factor tests and for SCC, slump flow, T500, J-Ring, L-Box, V-Funnel and U-Box tests. Hardened concrete characteristics are investigated by compressive, split tensile and flexural strengths at age of 7, 28 and 90 days of curing under water. Carbonation depth, water absorption and density of MK based CC and SCC was also computed. Fresh concrete test results indicated that increase in MK replacement increases workability of concrete in a constant w/b ratio. Also, outcomes reveal that concrete integrating MK had greater compressive, flexural and split tensile strengths. Optimum replacement level of MK for cement was 10%, which increased mechanical properties and robustness properties of concrete.

  • A geo-composite soil (GCS) is a stabilized mixture of bottom ash, cement and dredged soil. Various samples with different mass ratios of mixtures were tested under curing time of 7 and 28 days to investigate physical properties and compressive strength. This paper focused on the effect of bottom ash on the strength characteristics of Busan marine dredged soil. Cement has been added as an additive constituent to enhance self-hardening of the blended mixture. The unconfined compressive strength of GCS increases with an increase in curing time due to pozzolanic reaction of the bottom ash. The strength after 28 days of curing is found to be approximately 1.3 to 2.0 times the strength after 7 days of curing, regardless of mixture conditions. The secant modulus of GCS is in the range of 55 to 134 times the unconfined compressive strength. The correlation of unconfined compressive strength with bottom ash content and initial void ratio are suggested.

  • The research reported here is concerned with the effects of the fiber combination condition and water/cement ratio on the mechanical properties of high performance fiber-reinforced cementitious composites(HPFRCC). An experimental investigation of the behavior of steel cords(SC) and SC and Polyethylene(PE) hybrid fiber reinforced cementitious material under compressive and tensile loading is presented. In this experimental research, the tensile and compressive strength and strain capacity of HPFRCC were selected using the cylindrical specimens. The results show that W/C ratio is a significant effect factor on the compressive and tensile performance of HPFRCC. The envelope curve concept applies to hybrid fiber-reinforced cementitious composites in tension just as it does to compressive stress-strain curve of fiber-reinforced cement composites. For practical purposes, the tensile envelope curve may be taken to be the same as the monotonic tensile stress-strain curve.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of substitution of silica fume and fly ash to the mortar mixed with 1:1 of cement/sand ratio on the physical properties. The changes of physical properties were observed through compressive strength, XRD, SEM, and porosity. As result, the compressive strength was excellent when silica fume was replaced with cement in the range of 10%. But the substituion of fly ash was not affect with improvement of compressive strength. Especially , the compressive strength showed the maximum value with 1047kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ for the substitution of silica fume and fly ash of 10% and 5%, respectively.

  • Variations of piezoelectric properties and compressive strength of Sr-doped PZT ceramics were investigated with poling direction. The electro-mechanical coupling constants (k31 and k33) were increased linearly with increasing poling strength. The volume fraction of intergranular fracture also increased with incresing poling strength due to weakening of grain boundaries by domain rearrangement during poling process. The internal stresses induced from the poling at 2.5 kV/mm parallel and perpendicular to the poling direction poled were 405 MPa and 89 MPa, respectively. The compressive strength of the specimen poled parallel to the poling direction was higher than that perpendicular to the poling direction.
