In the construction of nuclear power plants using massive walls, the use of high-strength re-bars for shear design is necessary to enhance the constructability and economy. In this study, low-rise walls (aspect ratio of 1.0) with grade 550 MPa bars were tested under cyclic loading to investigate the shear capacity and deformation capacity. The test parameters were the grade of horizontal re-bars (550 MPa, 420 MPa), strength of concrete compressive strength (46 MPa, 70 MPa), horizontal/vertical reinforcement ratio, use of lateral confinement hoops, shape of cross section, and failure modes (shear failure before or after flexural yielding). The test results were compared with those of walls with grade 420 MPa bars and predicted strength by current design codes. The results showed that the shear strength of the walls with 550 MPa bars was comparable to that of the walls with 420 MPa bars though the safe margin slightly decreased. ACI 349 provides underestimated shear strength for the walls with 550 MPa bars. In case of the wall with flexural yielding, a large deformation capacity was achieved. This result indicates that the ACI 349 provisions can be safely applied to seismic design of the low-rise walls (aspect ratio of 1.0) with grade 550 MPa bars.

Polymer composite materials offer high strength and stiffness to weight ratio, corrosion resistance, and total life cost reductions that appeal to the marine industry. The advantages of composite construction have led to their incorporation in U.S. yacht hull structures over 46 meters (150 feet) in length. In order to construct even larger hull structures, higher quality composites with lower cost production techniques need to be developed. In this study, the effect of composite hull fabrication processes on mechanical properties of glass fiber reinforced plastic (GFRP) composites is presented. Fabrication techniques investigated during this study are hand lay-up (HL), vacuum infusion (VI), and hybrid (HL+VI) processes. Mechanical property testing includes: tensile, compressive, and ignition loss sample analysis. Results demonstrate that the vacuum pressure implemented dining composite fabrication has an effect on mechanical properties. The VI processed GFRP yields improved mechanical properties in tension/compression strengths and tensile modulus. The hybrid GFRP composites, however, failed in a sequential manor, due to dissimilar failure modes in the HL and VI processed sides. Fractography analysis was conducted to validate the mechanical property testing results.
This paper presents the crack effect on CIP anchors and prediction of tensile capacity, as governed by concrete cone failure. Single anchors where located at center of concrete specimen. Three different types of cracks such as crack width of 0.2 mm and 0.5 mm, crack depth of 10 cm and 20cm , and crack location of center and off-center point were simulated. Static tensile load was applied to 7/8-in. CIP anchors of 10 cm and 20 cm embedment length in concrete with compressive strength of 280 kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$. Tested pullout capacities were compared to the values determined using current design methods (such as ACI 349-97, ACI 349 revision and CEB-FIP which is based on CCD Method). The comparison of CCD Method and ACI revision showed almost the same values in uncracked concrete specimen. In cracked concrete, CCD Method predicted conservative values. Three-dimensional non-linear FEM modeling also has been performed to determine the stresses distribution and crack inclination.
The objective of this study is to investigate the effect of the openings on the structural behavior of SC walls. The test parameters were with or without the reinforcing of openings and sleeve thickness. The common failure showed that the crack in the concrete progressed with the plate's local buckling between the shear connectors. The failure of the openings showed that the vertical wall of the sleeve buckled toward the opening inside. The plate buckling load showed a similar value with or without the sleeve of the opening, respectively. However, the maximum compressive strength of the specimen without the opening was higher than that of specimen with the opening.
The concrete filled steel tubular column have to superior in compressive load carrying capacity, compared with same section typed hollow steel tube column, and have many excellent structural properties, such as stiffness improvement by filled concrete, improvement of ductility by reinforced effect of local buckling, and the like. However, it has not clear the effect of interaction between steel tube and filled concrete, stress portion ratio and fracture mechanism of concrete. This study investigated to structural properties for high strength concrete filled steel tube column by loading conditions through a series of experiments. Especially, this study investigated the properties of structural behaviors for concrete filled steel tube column stress ratio by loading conditions and failure mechanism of filled concrete.

Main objective of this study is to examine the hysteretic behaviors and to evaluate the capacity of precast concrete (PC) large panel structures simulated from the prototype of 15-story building, Two 1/2 scaled precast concrete wall specimens and one monolithic reinforced concrete specimen were designed and tested under the cyclic loading conditions. The main parameter of test specimens in PC large panel structure is the type of details for vertical continuity of vertical steel in horizontal joint. Also the behaviors of PC large panel structures are compared with that of monolithic reinforcement concrete wall structure. From the results, the stiffness and energy dissipation ratio of the precast concrete specimens are shown little bit lower than those of monolithic reinforced concrete specimen. In the PC large panel structures, the specimen connected vertically by welding (strong connection) showed higher strength than that of the specimen connected vertically by joint box. However the failure pattern of the former showed more brittle than that of the latter due to the diagonal compressive failure of wall panels.
The study presented experimental and numerical investigation on the seismic performance of steel reinforced concrete (SRC) L-shaped column- reinforced concrete (RC) beam joints. Various parameters described as steel configuration form, axial compressive ratio, loading angle, and the existence of slab were examined through 4 planar joints and 7 spatial joints. The characteristics of the load-displacement response included the bearing capacity, ductility, story drift ratio, energy-dissipating capacity, and stiffness degradation were analyzed. The results showed that shear failure and flexural failure in the beam tip were observed for planar joints and spatial joint, respectively. And RC joint with slab failed with the plastic hinge in the slab and bottom of the beam. The results indicated that hysteretic curves of spatial joints with solid-web steel were plumper than those with hollow-web specimens. The capacity of planar joints was higher than that of space joints, while the opposite was true for energy-dissipation capacity and ductility. The high compression ratio contributed to the increase in capacity and initial stiffness of the joint. The elastic and elastic-plastic story deformation capacity of L-shaped column frame joints satisfied the code requirement. A design formula of joint shear resistance based on the superposition theory and equilibrium plasticity truss model was proposed for engineering application.

This paper studies the effect of using multi-scale reinforcement additives on mechanical strengths, damage performance, microstructure, and water absorption of cementitious composites. Small dosages of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) or polypropylene (PP) microfibers; 0.05%, 0.1%, and 0.2% by weight of cement; were added either separately or simultaneously into cement mortar. The experimental results show the ability of these additives to enhance the mechanical behavior of the mortar. The best improvement in compressive and flexural strengths of cement mortar reaches 28% in the case of adding a combination of 0.1% CNTs and 0.2% PP fibers for compression, and a combination of 0.2% CNTs and 0.2% PP fibers for flexure. Adding CNTs does not change the brittle mode of failure of plain mortar whereas the presence of PP fibers changes it into ductile failure and clearly enhances the fracture energy of the specimens. Scanning electron microscopic (SEM) images of the fracture surfaces highlights the role of CNTs in improving the adhesion between the PP fibers and the hydration products and thus enhance the ability of the fibers to mitigate cracks propagation and to enhance the mechanical performance of the mortar.

In this paper, the structural performance of RC and HPFRCC slabs exposed to a TNT explosion were numerically investigated. A finite element model was established using the MM-ALE method in the LS-DYNA program to simulate a near-ground TNT explosion at a scaled distance of 1.08 m/kg3. The K&C model was calibrated to exactly reflect the material properties of HPFRCCs that were developed in KICT and KNU. Numerical and experimental results were compared for the damage distribution and failure shape of the slabs. Based on the verified numerical model, a parametric study was carried out to demonstrate the effects of compressive strength and thickness of the slab on the blast resistance. In particular, the spallation failure on the back side of the slab is greatly dependent on the thickness. Finally, additional numerical simulations were conducted to explore the variation in blast pressure characteristics according to the scaled distance and explosive shape. It was confirmed that the pressure induced by cubic TNT was more destructive to the slab than cylindrical and spherical TNT in a nearfield explosion.
The three-dimensional Hashin criterion and user subroutine VUMAT were used to simulate the damage in the composite layer, and the secondary stress criterion was used to simulate the interlayer failure of the cohesive element of the bonding layer and the propagation characteristics under the layer. The results showed that when the shear stress wave (shear wave) propagates on the surface of the laminate, the stress wave attenuation along the fiber strength direction is small, and thus producing a large stress profile. When the compressive stress wave (longitudinal wave) is transmitted between the layers, it is reflected immediately instead of being transmitted immediately. This phenomenon occurs only when the energy has accumulated to a certain degree between the layers. The transmission of longitudinal waves is related to the thickness and the layer orientation. Along the symmetry across the thickness direction, the greater is the stress amplitude along the layer direction. Based on the detailed investigation on the impact on various laminated composites carried out in this paper, the propagation characteristics of stress waves, the damage and the destruction of laminates can be explained from the perspective of stress waves and a reasonable layering sequence of the composite can be designed against damage and failure from low velocity impact.
