The strength parameters used in rock mass design are mainly estimated by equations using Hoek-Brown failure criterion because the tests to obtain the values are limited and expensive. To estimate the strength parameters, the Hoek-Brown failure criterion should be transformed to the Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion. But the processes are more or less cumbersome due to the several stages including the computation and the analyzing steps. In this study, several rock states of various conditions were modeled and then the strength parameters were estimated using the Hoek-Brown failure criterion. Thereafter by analyzing the results, some charts and equations estimating the strength parameters through only one step or easily in the field using the values of RMC, the uniaxial compressive strength and the rock constant ($m_i$), were suggested. And then the suggested method was compared and discussed with the existing method.

In this study, the effect of laminate thickness on the compressive behaviour of composite materials was investigated through systematic experimental work using the stacking sequences, [04]ns, [45/0/-45/90]ns and [45n/0n/-45n/90n]s (n = 2 to 8). The stacking sequence effects on failure strength of multidirectional laminates were examined. For this purpose, two different scaling techniques were used; (1) ply-level technique [45n/0n/-45n/90n]s and (2) sub laminate level technique [45/0/-45/90]ns. An apparent thickness effect existed in the lay-up with blocked plies, i.e. unidirectional specimens $([0_4]ns)$ and ply-level scaled multidirectional specimens ([45n/0n/-45n/90n]s). From the investigation of the stacking sequence effect, the strength values obtained from the sub laminate level scaled specimens were slightly higher than those obtained from the ply level scaled specimens. The measured failure strengths were compared with the predicted values

In 1980 and 1990's most of residential buildings were constructed with relatively low strength concrete of 18 MPa. And, columns were designed considering only vertical loads. In this study, compressive strength tests for low strength RC columns retrofitted by carbon fiber sheets were carried out. Carbon fiber sheet provides constructability and high tensile strength as well as good corrosion resistance characteristics. A pair of carbon sheets were wrapped with ${\pm}60^{\circ}$ angle with respect to longitudinal direction of RC column to increase structural capacity against axial and lateral load simultaneously. Strength and strain patterns and failure modes of specimens were analyzed and prediction equation of increased compressive strength of RC column confined by carbon fiber sheet was proposed based on regression analysis.
For rock materials, a transversely isotropic failure criterion established through the extended Lade-Duncan failure criterion incorporating an anisotropic state scalar parameter, which is a joint invariant of deviatoric microstructure fabric tensor and normalized deviatoric stress tensor, is verified with the results of triaxial compressive data on Tournemire shale. For torsional shear mode with $0{\leq}b{\leq}0.75$, rock shear strengths decrease with ${\alpha}$ increasing until the rock shear strength approaches minimum value at ${\alpha}{\approx}40^{\circ}$, and after this point, the rock shear strengths increase as ${\alpha}$ increases further. For the torsional shear mode with b > 0.75, rock shear strengths are almost constant for ${\alpha}{\leq}40^{\circ}$, but it increases with increase in ${\alpha}$ afterwards. The rock shear strength variation against ${\alpha}$ agrees with shear strength changing tendency of heavily OCR natural London Clays tested before. Prediction results show that the transversely isotropic failure criterion proposed in the paper is reasonable.
This study explores the failure mechanisms of 'I' shaped non-persistent cracks under uniaxial loads through a combination of experimental tests and numerical simulations. Concrete specimens measuring 200 mm×200 mm×50 mm were manufactured, featuring 'I' shaped non-persistent joints. The number of these joints varied from one to three, with angles set at 0, 30, 60, and 90 degrees. Twelve configurations, differing in the placement of pre-existing joints, were considered, where larger joints measured 80 mm in length and smaller cracks persisted for 20 mm with a 1 mm crack opening. Numerical models were developed for the 12 specimens, and loading in Y-axis direction was 0.05 mm/min, considering a concrete tensile strength of 5 MPa. Results reveal that crack starting was primarily influenced by the slope of joint that lacks persistence in relation to the loading direction and the number of joints. The compressive strength of the samples exhibited variations based on joint layout and failure mode. The study reveals a correlation between the failure behavior of joints and the number of induced tensile fracture, which increased with higher joint angles. Specimen strength increased with decreasing joint angles and numbers. The strength and failure processes exhibited similarities in both laboratory testing and numerical modeling methods.
In this study, Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fiber was used to increase strength (unconfined compressive strength and tensile strength) of bio-cemented sand using microorganism. Ottawa sand was mixed with PVA fibers having three fiber contents (0, 0.4, and 0.8%). The fiber mixed sand was treated 14 times by using Microbially Induced Calcite Precipitation (MICP) which included culture (2 times per day) during 7 days to improve its engineering properties. The Bacillus Sporosarcina pasteurrii (Bacillus sp.) was used for urease activity. The specimen was prepared as a cylindrical specimen of 5 cm in diameter and 10 cm in height. Unconfined compressive strength and tensile strength were measured after cementation. Moreover, calcium carbonate content and SEM analyses were performed with a piece of sample. An average value of unconfined compressive strength increased and then slightly decreased but an average value of tensile strength ratio increased with increasing carbonate content the in same condition. Unconfined compressive strength and tensile strength increased about 30% and 160%, respectively. A strength ratio of unconfined compressive strength to tensile strength representing the brittleness decreased from 8 to 4 when fiber content increased from 0.0 to 0.8%. Such bio-cemented sand can be applied into slope area to prevent its shear failure or increase its tensile strength.

In order to test the adhesive capacity of carbon fiber sheet, a static loading method for bending-behavior-type beam specimens, cut in half was developed and test was conducted with compressive strength of concrete set as the test parameter. The tests were performed to prescribe adhesive shear strength based upon the result of shear failure as well as verification of testing method. First of all, the test method proved to be reliable in determining the adhesive shear strength. The test result also exhibited two types of variations in adhesive shear strength. Among two types of variations, average and minimum values for adhesive shear strength, relatively stable results, 3.41MPa and 2.11MPa, respectively. Particularity in the adhesive shear strength with respect to compressive shear strength was not found.
This paper aims to analytically study the effect of loading conditions and confinement type on the mechanical properties of the concrete-steel composite columns under axial compressive loading. The axial loading is applied to the composite columns in the two ways; only on the concrete core, and on the concrete core and steel tube simultaneously, which are called steel tube-confined concrete (STCC) and concrete-filled steel tube (CFST) columns, respectively. In addition, the confinement is investigated in the three types of passive, short-term active and long-term active confinement. Nonlinear finite element 3D models for analyzing these columns are developed using the ABAQUS program, and then these models are verified with respect to the recent experimental results reported by the authors on the STCC and CFST columns experiencing active and passive confinements. Axial and lateral stress-strain curves as well as the failure mode for qualitative verification, and compressive strength for quantitative verification are considered. It is found that there is a good consistency between the finite element analysis results and the experimental ones. In addition, a parametric study is performed to evaluate the effect of axial loading type, prestressing ratio, concrete compressive strength and steel tube diameter-to-wall thickness ratio on the compressive behavior of the composite columns. Finally, the compressive strength results of CFST specimens obtained via the finite element analysis are compared with the values specified by the international codes and standards including EC4, CSA, ACI-318, and AISC, with the results showing that ACI-318 and AISC underestimate the compressive strength of the composite columns, while EC4 and CSA codes present overestimated values.
In according with concrete structural design standard, it is common designing flexure reinforcement concrete to induce tension failure. So reinforcing ratio is limited to inducing tension failure. And maximum reinforcing ratio is regulated to protecting concrete compression strength caused by over reinforced building. Minimum reinforcing ratio is also limited in designing standard to protecting brittle failure as extremely using less reinforcing bar. But in minimum reinforcing ratio it is extremely conservative or it is sometimes impossible to induce stable tension-failure because they are depending on yield failure and experienced method and concrete designing standard strength. Therefore the purpose of the present paper is to evaluate the flexural behavior of minimum steel ratio of reinforced concrete of beams and to propose the guide-line of equation of minimum steel ratio by performing static flexural test of 16 beams according to size effect, number of steel, yielding stress of steel, and concrete compressive strength which are presumed effective variables. From experimental results, the equation of minimum steel ratio was newly proposed considered size effect.

In order to the influence of grain size distribution on compressive strength and coefficient of permeability, unconfined compression test and permeability test were performed for seventy samples that have various grain-size distributions. Its results are as follows: 1. Maximum unconfined compressive strength appears at the dry side of optimum moisture content. 2. Unconfined compressive strength is proportional to the increase of percent passing of No. 200 sieve. 3. Precent of deformation in failure increases in proportion to the increase of percent passing of No. 200 sieve, and modulus of No. 200 sieve, and modulus of deformation also increases in proportion to percent passing of No. 200 sieve. 4. Unconfined compressive strength increases in proportion to uniformity coefficient, liquid limit and plastic index, but it decreases gradually according to the increase of coefficient of grading and classification area. 5. Maximum dry density decreases according to the increase of void ratio. 6. Coefficient of permeability decreases according to the increase of percent passing of No. 200 sieve, and when percent of No. 200 sieve, and when percent passing of No. 200 enlarged more than 40%, it becomes less than $10^{-6}cm/sec$ which is the limit of coefficient of permeability of core material for earth dam proposed by Lee. 7. Coefficient of permeability increases according to the increase of coefficient of grading, classification area and index of Talbot formula r, but it was rather decrease by the increase of uniformity coefficient. 8. Coefficient of permeability seems to depend on the size and the shape of the flow path which is a series of void to be concerned by the size and the proprton of soil grain, even though void ratios are same.
