The mechanism of pullout resistance of compression anchor is analysed. This anchor is developed through the field pullout tests and the laboratory element test. The compression anchor is characterized by decrease of progressive failure, simple site work, economy and durability compared with tension anchor. The characteristics of compression anchor, compared with tension anchor. mainly are summarized as follows ; (1) The plastic displacement of anchor body is very small during pullout of anchor. (2) Total anchor length decreases by the shortening of free length; (3) The progressive failure is decreased.; (4) The safety factor for pullout resistance increases with time after construction of anchor.
The memory compression algorithm CCC-LCP (color-count-controlled local color palette) reduces flicker in the liquid crystal display (LCD) overdrive. Its compression ratio is 1:5.4 for 10-bit images, with a 33 dB PSNR peak signal-to-noise ratio and with five times flicker reduction compared with the block truncation coding. The authors' two-alternative forced choice subjective tests proposed two new soundness properties, the 'CMP harmlessness' and 'OD non-lost (or OD liveliness)', to clarify the functional interaction between the overdrive functionality OD and the compression functionality CMP. The tests verified that CCC-LCP is practically applicable (at a 1.2H viewing distance threshold) for 42" 37-ppi WXGA TVs.
This study examines the behaviour of single micropiles subjected to axial tension or compression load in collapsible loess under in-situ moisture content and saturated condition. Five tension loading tests and five compression loading tests on single micropiles were carried out at a typical loess site of the Loess Plateau in Northwest China. A series of laboratory tests, including grain size distribution, specific gravity, moisture content, Atterberg limits, density, granular components, shear strength, and collapse index, were carried out during the micropile loading tests to determine the values of soil parameters. The loess at the test site poses a severe collapse risk upon wetting. The tension or compression load-displacement curves of the micropiles in loess, under in-situ moisture content or saturated condition, can generally be simplified into three distinct regions: an initial linear, a curvilinear transition, and a final linear region, and the bearing capacity or failure load can be interpreted by the L1-L2 method as done in other studies. Micropiles in loess should be considered as frictional pile foundations though the tip resistances are about 10%-15% of the applied loads. Both the tension and compression capacities increase linearly with the ratio of the pile length to the shaft diameter, L/d. For micropiles in loess under in-situ moisture content, the interpreted failure loads or capacities under tension are 66%-87% of those under compression. However, the prewetting of the loess can lead to the reductions of 50% in the tensile bearing capacity and 70% in the compressive bearing capacity.
A new type of composite insulated concrete sandwich wall (ICS-wall), which is composed of a triangle truss steel wire network, an insulating layer, and internal and external concrete layers, is proposed. To study the mechanical properties of this new ICS-wall, tensile, compression, and shearing tests were performed on 22 specimens and tensile strength and corrosion resistance tests on 6 triangle truss joints. The variables in these tests mainly include the insulating plate material, the thickness of the insulating plate, the vertical distance of the triangle truss framework, the triangle truss layout, and the connecting mode between the triangle truss and wall and the material of the triangle truss. Moreover, the failure mode, mechanical properties, and bearing capacity of the wall under tensile, shearing, and compression conditions were analyzed. Research results demonstrate that the concrete and insulating layer of the ICS-wall are pulling out, which is the main failure mode under tensile conditions. The ICS-wall, which uses a graphite polystyrene plate as the insulating layer, shows better tensile properties than the wall with an ordinary polystyrene plate. The tensile strength and bearing capacity of the wall can be improved effectively by strengthening the triangle truss connection and shortening the vertical distances of the triangle truss. The compression capacity of the wall is mainly determined by the compression capacity of concrete, and the bonding strength between the wall and the insulating plate is the main influencing factor of the shearing capacity of the wall. According to the tensile strength and corrosion resistance tests of Austenitic stainless steel, the bearing capacity of the triangle truss does not decrease after corrosion, indicating good corrosion resistance.
The compression index is one of the geotechnical properties which represent the compressibility of clay. The compression index are generally obtained from consolidation tests, otherwise it has been predicted by soil properties due to the efficiency time and cost. In this study, consolidation tests result for Busan and Inchon clays are analyzed to suggest the correlations between the compression index and soil properties. It is found that the compression index is well correlated with the void ratio and natural water contents. The prediction errors, which is difference of compression indices between measured from consolidation test and predicted by liquid limits, decrease with ${\Delta}e_0/e_L$.
This study was carried out to estimate the property of dimensional stability of heat compression of italian poplar wood with low density. Firstly, two levels of pressure conditions were applied using the closed and open-press system. The thermal treatment temperatures were 180℃ and 200℃, respectively. Water absorption tests were conducted in water bath at 25℃ and 100℃ for 35 hours and 1 hour, respectively. The compression rates of wood were 47 percent, 60 percent, and 73 percent, respectively. From these tests, it was found that the dimensional stability of the closed-press system was superior to that of the open-press system. Furthermore, the dimensional stability of compressed wood in the closed-press system was better at 200℃ than 180℃. In compression rate, dimensional stability of 73 percent compression rate was the best result. Considering these results, the best conditions for the dimensional stability of compressed wood were those of the closed-compressing system at high temperatures above 200℃ and larger compression rate. Therefore, it was concluded that the dimensional stability of wood is improved at higher temperature and larger deformation.

This paper aims to better understand the bonding behavior in Reinforced Concrete beams strengthened with an Ultra-High Performance Fiber Reinforced Concrete (RCUHPFRC) layer on the compression side using experimental tests and numerical analyses. The UHPFRC mix design was obtained through an optimization procedure, and the characterization of the materials included compression and slant shear tests. Flexural tests were carried out in RC beams and RC-UHPFRC beams. The tests demonstrated a debonding of the UHPFRC layer. In addition, 3D finite element analyses were carried out in the Abaqus CAE program, in which the interface is modeled considering a zero-thickness cohesive-contact approach. The cohesive parameters are investigated, aiming to calibrate the numerical models, and a sensitivity analysis is performed to check the reliability of the assumed cohesive parameters and the mesh size. Finally, the experimental and numerical values are compared, showing a good approximation for both the RC beams and the RC strengthened beams.
In this study, ordinary portland cement, slag cement and micro cement which have been used in the construction fields were evaluated for the environmental effects and compression strength characteristics for curing solution. To find the leaching of C $r^{6+}$ characteristics in cement grouts, C $r^{6+}$ content tests were performed for the raw materials(cement powder). In addition, C $r^{6+}$ leaching tests were peformed for the homo-gel samples according to change of pH and each curing solution with the deionized water and leachate. Then, the unconfined compression strength tests were peformed with the homo-gel samples and the amount of changed C $r^{6+}$ was measured by curing solution.
This paper presents an experimental study on the behavior of axially-loaded steel RHS (rectangular hollow section) compression members that are partially reinforced along their lengths with welded steel plates. 28 slender column tests were carried out to investigate the effects of the slenderness ratio of the unreinforced member and the ratio of the reinforced length of the member to its entire length. In addition to the slender column tests, 14 stub-column tests were conducted to determine the basic mechanical properties of the test specimens under uniform compression. Test results show that both the compressive strength and stiffness of an RHS member can be increased significantly compared to its unreinforced counterpart even when only the central quarter of the member is reinforced. Based on the limited test data, it can be concluded that partial reinforcement is, in general, more effective in members with larger slenderness ratios. A simple design expression is also proposed to predict the compressive strength of RHS columns partially reinforced along their length with welded steel plates by modifying the provisions of AISC 360-10 to account for the partial reinforcement.
