  • The present study addresses the open correction associated with the reflection and discharge phenomena of a weak shock wave from an open end of a duct. The open correction of the weak shock wave is investigated experimentally and by numerical computation. An experiment is made using a simple shock tube with an open end. and computaion is performed to simulate the experimental flow field using the unsteady, axisymmetric compressible. flow governing equations. The results obtained show the an open correction should be involved for shock wave discharge and reflection problems generated from the exit of the duct with an open baffle plate. With a baffle plate less than three times the duct diameter, it is found that the open end correction is a function of both the diameter of the baffle plate and normal shock wave magnitude However, for a baffle plate larger than three the duct diameter it is independent of the baffle plate diametre, The present computations predict the results of shock tube experiment with good accuracy. A new empirical equation for prediction of the open correction is found for the weak shock reflection and discharge phenomena occurring at the open of the duct with and without a baffle plate.

  • The complex, unsteady, self-sustained pressure oscillations induced by supersonic flow past a rectangular cavity is investigated using numerical simulations. The present numerical study is performed using a parallel, multiblock solver for the two-dimensional, compressible NavierStokes equations. Open cavities with length-to-depth (L / D) ratio in the range 0.5 - 3.3 are considered. This paper sheds light on the cavity physics, cavity oscillatory mechanism, and the organisation of vortical structures inside the cavity. The vortex shedding phenomenon, the shear layer impingement event at the aft wall and the movement of the acoustic/compression wave within the cavity are well predicted. The vortical structures· and the source of the acoustic disturbances are found to be located near the aft wall of the cavity. With the increase in the cavity length, strong recompression of the flow near the aft wall leading to a sudden jump in the cavity form drag is observed. The estimated cavity tones are in good agreement with the available semiempirical relation. Multiple peaks are noticed in deep and long cavities. For the present freestream Mach number 1.71, it is observed that around L/D=2.0, the cavity oscillatory mechanism changes from the transverse to longitudinal oscillatory mode. The effects of this transition on various fluid dynamics and acoustic properties are also discussed.

  • Particle motion through a disk type critical orifice placed in a 3.0cm diameter chamber has been studied numerically. In the simulation, the velocity field is solved using Pantankar's SIMPLER algorithm for the compressible flow and convergence of the computation is confirmed if the mass source at each control volume is smaller than $10^{-7}$. The particle motion in the flow field is solved in Lagrangian method. The particle trajectories showed that the particles injected away from the center line are expanded rapidly. At lower pressures, this expansion phenomena are more dominant. At lower pressures, the clear difference in particle and air speed is showed all the way down to the exit plan. It was found that particles with Stokes number of ca.2.5 tend to focus close to the center line very well except the particles travelling near the wall. However, particles with Stokes number greater than ca.2.5 show a tendency to cross the center line.

  • The time-dependent behavior of unsteady condensation of moist air through the Ludwieg tube is investigated by using a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) work. The two-dimensional, compressible, Navier-Stokes equations, fully coupled with the condensate droplet growth equations, are numerically solved by a third-order MUSCL type TVD finite-difference scheme, with a second-order fractional time step. Baldwin-Lomax turbulence model is employed to close the governing equations. The predicted results are compared with the previous experiments using the Ludwieg tube with a diaphragm downstream. The present computations represent the experimental flows well. The time-dependent unsteady condensation characteristics are discussed based upon the present predicted results. The results obtained clearly show that for an initial relative humidity below 30% there is no periodic oscillation of the condensation shock wave, but for an initial relative humidity over 40% the periodic excursions of the condensation shock occurs in the Ludwieg tube, and the frequency increases with the initial relative humidity. It is also found that total pressure loss due to unsteady condensation in the Ludwieg tube should not be ignored even for a very low initial relative humidity and it results from the periodic excursions of the condensation shock wave.

  • Dual throat nozzle(DTN) is recently attracting much attention as a new concept of the thrust vectoring technique. This DTN is designed with two throats, an upstream minimum and a downstream minimum at the nozzle exit, with a cavity in between the upstream throat and exit. In the present study, a computational work has been carried out to analyze a fundamental performance of a dual throat nozzle(DTN) at various nozzle pressure ratios(NPR) and throat area ratios. Two-dimensional, axisymmetric, steady, compressible Navier-Stokes equations were solved using a fully implicit finite volume scheme. NPR was varied in the range of NPR from 2.0 to 10.0, at different throat area ratios. The present computational results were validated with some experimental data available. Based upon the present results, the performance of DTN is discussed in terms of the discharge coefficient and thrust efficiency.

  • A cone cylinder is used to obtain variable operation conditions of a sonic ejector-diffuser system. The cone cylinder is movable to change the ejector area ratio, thus obtaining variable mass flow rates. The present study investigates the effects of ejector throat area ratio and operating pressure ratio on the entrainment of secondary stream. The numerical simulations are based on a fully implicit finite volume scheme of the compressible, Reynolds-Averaged, Navier-Stokes equations. The ejector throat area is varied between 3.94 and 8.05, and the operating pressure ratio is changed from 3.0 to 9.0. The results show that the entrainment ratio and mass flux ratio become more dependent on the ejector throat area ratio, when the pressure operating ratio is low. The total pressure losses produced in the present ejector system increase with the operating pressure ratio and the ejector area ratio, but for a given operating pressure ratio, the losses are not significantly dependent on the ejector area ratio when it is larger than about 5.0.

  • It is the objective of this study that by conducting the serni-solid extrusion using A12024, the effect of various process variables on the quality of extruded product and extrusion force is understood. The results of experiment are compared with those of finite element simulation in order to verify the effectiveness of the developed FE-simulation code. In order to simulate densification in the deformation of serni-solid material, the semi-solid material is assumed to be composed of solid region as porous skeleton following compressible visco-plastic model and liquid region following Darcy's equation for the liquid flow saturated in the interstitial space. Then the flow and deformation of the semi-solid alloy are analyzed by coupling the deformation of the porous skeleton and the flow of the eutectic liquid. It is assumed that initial solid fraction is homogeneous. Yield and plastic potential function presented by Kuhn and constitutive model developed by Gunasekera are used for solid skeleton.

  • A time-iterative compressible Navier-Stokes code is developed to analyze the flowfield of a two-dimensional ejector nozzle system. A parametric study has been made for two controlling parameters, duct to nozzle area ratio and nozzle pressure ratio. Results show that there is an optimum area ratio for an efficient pumping of secondary flow. At high area ratios, a freestream flow directly passes through the mixing duct without giving adequate pumping. While at low area ratios, jet boundary is acting as a blockage to incoming flow. The nozzle pressure ratio variation shows that the pumping rate increases as the pressure ratio increases provided there is no interaction between the shroud wall and the shock cell structure.

  • A compressible multiphase flow was investigated using a DIM consisting of seven equations, including the fifth-order MLP and a modified HLLC Riemann solver to achieve a precise interface structure of liquid and gas. The numerical methods were verified by comparing the flow structures of the high-pressure water and low-pressure air in the shock tube. A 2D air-helium shock-bubble interaction at the incident shock wave condition (Mach number 1.22) was numerically solved and verified using the experimental results.

  • Flows in a ramjet inlet is simulated for the study of the rocket-ramjet transition. The flow is unsteady, two-dimensional axisymmetric, compressible and turbulent. Double time marching method is used for the unsteady calculation and HLLC method is used as a higher order MUSCL method. As for turbulent calculation, $\kappa-\omega$ SST model is used for more accurate viscous calculations. Sinusoidal pressure perturbation is given at the exit and the flow fields at the inlet is studied. The cruise condition as well as the ground test condition are considered. The pressure level for the ground test condition is relatively low and the effect of the pressure perturbation at the combustion chamber is small. The normal shock at the cruise condition is very sensitive to the pressure perturbation and can be easily detached from the cowl when the exit pressure is relatively high. The sudden decrease in the mass flux is observed when the inlet flow becomes subcritical, which can make the inlet incapable. The amplitude of travelling pressure waves becomes larger as the downstream pressure increases, and the wavelength becomes shorter as Mach number increases. The phase difference of the travelling perturbed pressure wave in space is 180 degree.
