  • Cutting fluid usually has been used in order to improve machinability, tool life, surface quality. However, problems such as pollution, costs of chip and fluid treatment caused. In this paper, compressed chilly air was used to machine aircraft parts and investigate possibility and advantage of that. The experiments were carried out in various cutting environments, such as wet and compressed chilly air. With respect to the cutting environment, compressed chilly air gave advantages such as decrease of pollution and easy chip treatment.

  • High speed machining of difficult-to-cut materials generates the concentrated thermal/frictional damage at the cutting edge of the tool and rapidly decreases the tool life. In this paper, the cutting environments, such as dry, fluid coolant, and compressed chilly air coolant, were investigated to improve the tool life. For this study, the compressed chilly air system was manufactured. The experiments were performed for various difficult-to-cut materials and various coated tools. The effectiveness of the developed methods on the basis of tool life was estimated. The results show that the cutting environment using compressed chilly air coolant provided better tool life than using the fluid coolant or using the dry.

  • As the large Coolant amount used of a machine holds mass serious trouble recently, an environment pollution is increased, and a machine is conquering large specific gravity in an empty cost plane. It is the stage that must reexamine the parts washing that processing is later with this current way or a problem of a liquid waste treatment back. The environmental problems by using coolant demanded the new cooling methods. As one of them, the studies on the grinding with compressed cold air and oil mist have been done. The cooling method using compressed cold air was effective through going down the temperature of compressed air supplied below -$25^{\circ}C$ and increasing the amount of compressed cold air, but had not enough cooling effect due to the low performance of lubrication. Therefore, the cooling methods using oil mist newly were suggested. This method can satisfy both cooling effect and lubrication with only small amount of coolant, also have the benefit in the point of decreasing the environmental pollution. This paper focused on analyzing the grinding characteristics of the cooling method using oil mist. The grinding test according to compressed cold air and oil mist supply direction were done.

  • The estimation of fatigue life at the design stage of the compressed air tank on board is very important in order to arrive at feasible and reliable solutions considering the total lifetime of the tank. In this paper the compressed air tank on board was selected as a model and the change of inside pressure of the tank during normal navigation period was measured and the cycle of fluctuation stress was presumed statistically based on this. Also the effect of stress concentration with the FEM analysis on the longitudinal weld and the mean stress effect on the fatigue strength of compressed air tank were discussed.

  • 이 논문의 목적은 작업장에서 사용하기 위한 에어건의 개발에 관련된 것이다. 에어건은 공작기계를 사용하는 산업현장에서 공작물 칩과 절삭유의 제거를 위한 도구이다. 그리고 그것은 일반적으로 압축공기를 분사하는 용도로 사용된다. 작업자는 에어의 흡입과 분사를 위해 각각의 에어건을 준비하여야 한다. 따라서 우리는 새로운 에어건을 개발하였다. 이 논문에서 우리는 에어건의 설계와 분석을 위한 연구를 한다. 에어건은 몸체, 파이프, 개폐 유닛, 전환 유닛, 에어 튜브 그리고 조립을 위한 요소들로 구성된다. 개발된 에어건은 그 효율을 확인하기 위해 실험된다.

  • Air partial pressure ratio and inlet air mass flow are influenced by water vapor and gaseous fuel in mixture on Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) engines. In this paper, the effects of the water vapor and the gaseous fuel that change the air mass flow and the air-fuel ratio are studied. Effective air mass ratio is defined as the air mass flow divided by mixture mass flow, and also it is applied to the estimation of the inlet air mass flow and the air-fuel ratio. The presence of the gaseous fuel and the water vapor in the mixture reduces the air partial pressure and the effective air mass ratio of the CNG engines. The experimental results for the CNG engine show that estimation of the air-fuel ratio based upon the effective air mass ratio is more accurate than that of a normal mode.

  • The purpose of the present work is to develop a compressed air discharging system to eject a projectile from the underwater. For the flow analysis of compressed air tank, projectile ejection tube, and pipe system, the air is assumed as an ideal gas, undergoing 1-dimensional axisymmetric, compressible flow, the Fanno flow analysis was applied. The commercial Fluent code was used to solve 3-D Navier-Stokes equation of the internal flow within the valve. The dynamics of the projectile within the ejection tube was assumed 1-degree of freedom. The calculations were performed to four cases of valve opening area ratio, i.e., 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% opening area, at both depths of 10m and 50m. The results were shown as the figures of time variation of pressure of the compressed air tank and projectile ejection tube. The velocity and distance of the projectile were also predicted.

철도차량용 공기압축기의 열교환기 최적 설계를 위한 해석 연구 (Numerical Analysis for Optimal Design of Heat Exchanger in Air Compressor for Railroad Vehicle)

  • In this study, we examined the multi-stage piston-type air compressors typically used in a railroad vehicle, and the heat transfer efficiency was analyzed according to the design conditions of the heat exchanger (a compressor component module for cooling the compressed high temperature air). For the fin-tube heat exchanger used in the most air compressors, numerical analysis was performed to analyze heat transfer by defining the various rectangle tube sizes and the number of fin-per-unit area as design variables under the same flow rate of compressed air. Also, this analysis compared the temperature of the compressed air. Regarding environmental conditions for analysis, the flow rate of the external cooling air was measured and the mean value of the values was applied. And a "turbulence model" was considered in both the external flow of the cooling air and the internal flow inside the tube. From the results of analysis, it was found that the change of the aspect ratio value of the tube greatly influences the heat transfer efficiency of the compressed air, and influences if the fin density is relatively small. As a result, the optimum design specifications of the heat exchanger for air compressors were confirmed based on the analysis of the heat transfer efficiency, according to the design conditions of fin and tube by the operating temperature range of the compressed air.

An Experimental Study on Reducing Condensation in Marine Air Compressors

  • Compressed air has many uses on board ship, ranging from diesel engine starting to the cleaning of machinery during maintenance. In an effort to enhance the performance of the marine compressed air system, this work studied a way to reduce condensation from the air compressor via experiments. Especially more condensation is produced when the temperature at compressor outlets and the humidity of the air are higher. so in the research, drain production change has been observed by additionally installing the cooling fan on the suction portion of the air to air compressor and this is the method for reducing the compressed air drain that has passed through the compressor. For the result, it was verified that when the cooling fan was used, less drain was made where per hour it was 500.9ml of drain and the measured result after installing the cooling fan was that less drain was made. Other additional and various researches are needed including experiments like silica gel passing through the suction portion afterwards.

  • The purposes of using cutting fluid during cutting have been cooling, lubricating, chip washing, and anti-corroding. However, the present manufacturing industry restricts the use of cutting fluid because cutting fluid contains poisonous substances which are harmful to the human body. Therefore dry cutting becomes an unavoidable assignment and a lot of researches have studied cutting methods without using cutting fluid. Because dry turning is a continuous work, tools life is reduced by continuous heat generation and surface gets rough due to reduced lubrication, so it is important to consider these situations. In this paper, the way of selecting the optimal machining condition by the minimum number of experiments and the effectiveness of using compressed air in high hardness materials through Taguchi method have been found. Dry cutting using compressed air showed better cutting characteristics than normal dry cutting with respect to by cutting force, tool wear, and surface roughness. Also, the optimal machining condition f3r dry cutting using compressed air could be selected through Taguchi method.
