Evaluation and Optimization of Power Electronic Converters using Advanced Computer Aided Engineering Techniques

  • Computer aided engineering (CAE) is a systematic approach to develop a better product/application with maximum possible options and minimum transition time. This paper presents a comprehensive feasibility analysis of various CAE techniques for evaluation and optimization of power electronic converters and systems. Different CAE methods for analysis, design, and performance improvement are classified. In addition, their advantages compared to the conventional workbench experimental methods are explained in detail and through examples.

  • Quite high prevalence of acute and chronic complications of calcaneal fractures has been reported. Acute complications include blisters, wound necrosis or infection. Late complications include subtalar arthritis, calcaneal malunion, lateral subfibular impingement, tendon problems, sural nerve complications. There are many surgical or nonsurgical treatment modalities to manage those complications. However strategic initial surgical approach with gentle soft tissue handling accompanied by comprehensive understanding about numerous complications might be the best tool to achieve pain free and functional heel after treating calcaneal fractures.

  • The purpose of this study was two-fold : (1) to investigate the difference between the lifting capacities based on three different ergonomic approaches; a) the biomechanical, b) the physiological, and c) the phsychophysicalo approach, and the 1991 revised NIOSH Equation, and (2) to develop a comprehensive model for deter- mining maximum weight of lift.

  • Service engineering is a new discipline which aims at basically understanding of service and a concrete methodology using engineering approach for service design. In this paper is introduced the serviset graph [7] which is a comprehensive concept to represent service products, processes, and operation activities. The proposed concept is a degree of commonality index in a service product in order to deal with service mass customization using the input-output analysis in economic model.

  • In this work, we present a comprehensive and systematic approach for the derivation of the dc voltage generated by a magnetic multilayer undergoing ferromagnetic resonance, originally derived by Berger. Our alternative derivation applies especially in the limit of the spin diffusion length much longer than the carrier mean free path.

A Theoretical Analysis of Public Procurement for Innovation

  • This paper provides a new theoretical rationale for public procurement for innovation (PPI), a unique policy encouraging public procurers to purchase innovative products. In contrast to existing studies that primarily emphasize the advantages of PPI, this paper takes a comprehensive approach, examining both the costs and risks associated with PPI, alongside its benefits. It finds a general condition under which PPI outperforms traditional public procurement. Under this condition, this paper demonstrates that PPI enhances social welfare by facilitating optimal risk-sharing between public procurers and the general economy. Additionally, it draws policy implications from a comparative analysis between the current PPI policy in Korea and an optimal PPI policy.

  • The number of theoretical orientations and approaches in music therapy has risen sharply. This development of new theories may contribute to the advancement of specific therapeutic techniques; however, it can also lead to increased confusion for consumers and professionals for clinical and practical reasons. Due to these concerns, therapists often debate questions such as the following: what is the most effective therapeutic approach, what is the most ethical and professional course of action when clients do not appear to benefit from therapy, and is it possible to integrate ideas and techniques from multiple frameworks and theories in order to better serve the client? This paper describes a new way of thinking for music therapists called Integral Thinking in Music Therapy (ITMT), proposed by Kenneth Bruscia as a comprehensive approach to addressing the clinical needs of the client. ITMT is a way of thinking that embraces existing models and theories, suggests when a particular approach is indicated with its own value, and helps us to move away from one-way thinking to a more comprehensive approach in order to better serve our clients. This article illustrates the basic premise and clinical application as well as a hypothetical application of ITMT based on an actual case study.

  • Although the biological potential of gastric epithelial dysplasia (GED) as a precursor of gastric cancer has never been in doubt, the classification of these lesions has been controversial and fraught with marked variations in approach to diagnosis across the world. The complexity of cyto-architectural features has been considered to be of paramount importance for the diagnosis of carcinoma in Japan, while breach of the basement membrane and invasion into the lamina propria has been considered the sine qua non of malignancy and hence a pre-requisite for the diagnosis of cancer in the West. In Korea, although the incidence of gastric cancer is similar to Japan, the diagnostic approach to GED or cancer seems to lie midway between Western and Japanese criteria. In this review, we will discuss the difference in the diagnosis of GED and cancer between two pathologists working in the comprehensive cancer center located in Japan and Korea, one of the most prevalent areas in the world for gastric cancer.

Real-Time License Plate Detection in High-Resolution Videos Using Fastest Available Cascade Classifier and Core Patterns

  • We present a novel method for real-time automatic license plate detection in high-resolution videos. Although there have been extensive studies of license plate detection since the 1970s, the suggested approaches resulting from such studies have difficulties in processing high-resolution imagery in real-time. Herein, we propose a novel cascade structure, the fastest classifier available, by rejecting false positives most efficiently. Furthermore, we train the classifier using the core patterns of various types of license plates, improving both the computation load and the accuracy of license plate detection. To show its superiority, our approach is compared with other state-of-the-art approaches. In addition, we collected 20,000 images including license plates from real traffic scenes for comprehensive experiments. The results show that our proposed approach significantly reduces the computational load in comparison to the other state-of-the-art approaches, with comparable performance accuracy.

  • For the rational design and facile fabrication of novel nanostructures, we present a new approach to generating arrays of three-dimensionally tunable nanostructures by exploiting light-matter interaction. To create controlled three-dimensional (3D) nanostructures, we utilize the 3D spatial distribution of light, induced by the light-matter interaction, within the matter to be patterned. As a systematic approach, we establish 3D modeling that integrates the physical and chemical effects of the photolithographic process. Based on a comprehensive analysis of structural formation process and nanoscale features through this modeling, we are able to realize three-dimensionally tunable nanostructures using facile photolithographic process. Here we first demonstrate the arrays of three-dimensionally controlled, stacked nanostructures with nanoscale, tunable layers. We expect that the promising strategy would open new opportunities to produce the arrays of tunable 3D nanostructures using more accessible and facile fabrication process for various biomedical applications ranging from biosensors to drug delivery devices.
