In this study, polyolefin compounds were developed and evaluated for replacing a jacket material of URD power cables. The characteristics of compounds were investigated by water vapor transmission (WVT) test and mechanical test. In WVT test, all polyolefin compounds showed the superior water resistance to conventional PVC. The molecular structure and density of polyolefin play an important role in WVT. Also, polyolefin compounds showed the suitable characteristics in mechanical test. Especially, polyolefin compounds having linear molecules showed the superior characteristics to LDPE ones. From this study, it can be considered that polyolefin compounds may be suitable to jacket material for URD power cables.
Ten phenolic compounds were isolated from the twigs of Stewartia pseudocamellia. The isolated compounds were identified as 5,7,3',5'-tetrahydroxyflavanone (1), 3,5,7,3',5'-pentahydroxyflavanone (2), quercetin (3), (+)-aromadendrin (4), (+)-ampelopsin (5), myricetin (6), (+)-catechin (7), (-)-epicatechin (8), kaempferol (9), and fraxin (10) by spectroscopic analysis. Compounds 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, and 9 were isolated from this plant for the first time. The antioxidant activities of compounds 1-10 were evaluated by the DPPH and/or ORAC (oxygen radical absorbance capacity) assay. Compounds 3, 5-9 showed significant antioxidative effects on DPPH assay. Among the active compounds, 6 exhibited higher activity compared to trolox on ORAC assay.
This study was performed to find the changes in volatile sulfur compounds of garlic under various storage conditions. The volatile sulfur compounds of garlic were identified with GC and GC/MS. Analysis on the detected volatile sulfur compound of garlic which is known to have medical effect was performed while storing for two days at room temperature and for 1, 3 and 7 days at 4$^{\circ}C$ and -18$^{\circ}C$, respectively. The results of the study were summarized as follows : Total amount of 7 volatile sulfur compounds was the highest in the sample stored at room temperature for one hour. During the storage of 1, 3 and 7 days at -18$^{\circ}C$, chopped garlic contained more of volatile sulfur compounds than under any other storage conditions and the amounts of 7 volatile sulfur compounds increased gradually during the storage of chopped garlic.
The purpose of this experimental study was to investigate the effects of vulcanization condition on the properties of reinforced rubbers. Rubber reinforcing ability of carbon black was more efficient than other fillers, but tensile properties were not affected by vulcanization condition while vulcanization condition affected the physical properties of rubber compounds with silica and silane treated slica. It was found that silica and silane treated silica filled rubber compounds showed good dynamic properties, rebound, heat build-up, 0 and $60^{\circ}C$ tan $\delta$ compared with carbon black filled rubber compounds. Carbon black filled rubber compounds were higher than silica and silane treated silica filled rubber compounds in total crosslinking density by vulcanization condition. By analysis of crosslinking type, polysulfide crosslinking was the highest in the carbon black filled rubber compounds with decreasing the ratio of sulfur to accelerator, monosulfide crosslinking was the highest in the silane treated silica filled compounds with in-creasing the ratio of sulfur to accelerator.
The physical properties of rubber compounds containing silica and siliane coupling agent in order to replace the carbon black and prepare for environmental regulation showed improved dynamic properties(rebound, heat build-up, $60^{\circ}C\;tan\;{\delta}$), but the abrasion resistance did not improve compared with the compounds containing carbon black. Also, curing retardation because of coherent structure of silica improved by the addition of DEG, but the mixing step change of activators did not so much improve the static and dynamic properties of the compounds containing high synthetic rubber, the status of mixing and dispersion showed that the compounds containing carbon black was much better than the compounds containing silica by TEM investigation.
Volatile compounds in Pinus densiflora were extracted with Likens-Nickerson apparatus for three hours, and were separated and identified by gas chromatography(GC) and mass selective detector(MSD). Twenty six compounds were isolated from Pinus densiflora, identified by GC-MSD and twelve compounds were confirmed by matching retention times of the pure comounds. The main valatile compounds were terpenoids such as limonene(36.2%), $\beta$-pinene(16.9%), $\beta$-myrcene(12.6%) and $\alpha$-pinene(10.9%), and the total amount of these main compounds was 367.9$\mu\textrm{g}$ per 1g of pine twigs.
Gel-like compounds containing flammable solvents were prepared to use fur cleaning agents in field of innovative industries and general purposes. And experiments were conducted to improve the defects of liquified flammable solvents from the view point of safety and health hazards. Flammable solvents used in this study were several single component flammable solvents(turpentine oil, N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone(NMP), d-limonene) and multi component flammable solvent(gasoline and ethanol). For gelation of flammable solvents, commercially Known as Aerosil(equation omitted) 200 fumed silica and triethanolamine(TEA) were used as gelation agent dispersant. The analyses on properties of gel-like compounds was studied by gelation and viscosity test pH test, volatility test and differential scanning calorimetry(DSC) measurement. The experimental results indicate that gel-like compounds containing flammable solvents have pH stability, high viscosity, volatile organic compounds(VOC) control by the decrease of volatility and odor component generation, fluidity control etc. From the experimental values, it can be predicted that the safety in the working place is improved by manufacturing flammable solvents into gel-like compounds.
About 60% of the present drugs were developed from natural products with unique chemical diversity and biological activities. Hence, discovery of new bioactive compounds from natural products is still important for the drug development. On the other hand, breakthrough made in synthetic biology has also begun to supply us with many useful compounds through manipulation of biosynthetic gene for secondary metabolites. Theoretically, this approach can also be exploited to generate new unnatural compounds by intermixing genes from different biosynthetic pathway. Considering the potential, we are studying about bioactive compounds in natural sources, as well as the biosynthesis of natural products including engineering of the secondary metabolite enzymes to make new compounds in order to construct the methodological basis of the synthetic biology. In this symposium, engineering of secondary metabolite enzymes that are involved in the biosynthesis of plant polyketides to generate new compounds in our laboratory will be mainly introduced.
Lavender oil is a prolonged history in ancient medicine and has a wide range of biological effects. The lavender essential oil has 50 different constituents that have different therapeutic significance. The compounds that are separated from essential oil can be used for the anticancer treatment of non-small cell lung cancer. ROS1 is one of the major targets for NSCLC. The compounds from lavender essential oil are separated through GC-MS. From 91 compounds the top compounds that are having high retention values are taken for Molecular docking study against the ROS1 target protein. The binding affinity and the docked pose for those compounds are studied. Later, the chemical reactivity of the compounds is studied by Density Functional Theory. The potent compounds must be validated by in vivo study.
