Phelligridin D (Phe D) is a compound isolated from Phellinus baumii, which is known for various biological activities. In this study, the authors examined the effect of Phe D on boar spermatozoa for its potential application in assisted reproductive technology for mammals. Sperm motility and deubiquitinylating activity significantly decreased when boar spermatozoa were incubated with Phe D (>$0.5{\mu}M$). The fluorescence intensities of dead sperm, and reactive oxygen species production increased after sperm incubation in the presence of Phe D. Although Phe D is associated with antioxidant and free radical scavenging activity, sperm viability deteriorated after its addition. This could lead to fertilization failure, including that following artificial insemination or in vitro fertilization. Phe D might have other biological functions in spermatozoa, and therefore requires additional studies in the future.

Arsenic poisoning has three types of poisoning. First, acute arsenic poisoning is usually caused by oral intake of large amount of arsenic compound with purpose of homicide or suicide. Second, chronic arsenic poisoning is caused by inhalation of arsenic in the occupational setting or by long-term oral intake of arsenic-contaminated well water. Third, arsine poisoning occurs acutely when impurities of arsenic in non-ferrous metal react with acid. Clinical manifestation of acute arsenic poisoning is mainly gastrointestinal symptoms and cardiovascular collapse. Those of chronic poisoning are skin disorder and cancer. Arsine poisoning shows massive intravascular hemolysis and hemoglobinuria with acute renal failure. Exposure evaluation is done by analysis of arsenic in urine, blood, hair and nail. Species analysis of arsenic is very important to evaluate inorganic arsenic acid and mono methyl arsenic acid (MMA) separated from dimethyl arsenic acid (DMA) and trimethyl arsenic acid (TMA) which originate from sea weed and sea food. Treatment with dimercaprol (BAL) is effective in acute arsenic poisoning only.

Accelerated life testing (ALT) is a well famous technique in life testing and reliability studies, this is particularly used to induce so high stress leading to failure of the highly reliable units quickly under stipulated duration of time. The step-stress ALT is one of the systematic experimental strategy of ALT applied to fail the units in steps. In this article we focus on two important issues (i) necessity of life tests at higher steps with relevant causes (ii) to develop a new optimum test plan for 3-step SSALT under the modified cumulative exposure model proposed by Khamis and Higgins (1998). It is assumed that the lifetime of test units follows Rayleigh distribution and its scale parameter at constant stress level is assumed to be a log-linear function of the stress. The maximum likelihood estimates of the parameters involved in the step-stress ALT model are obtained. A simulation study is performed for numerical investigation of the proposed new optimum plan 3-step, step-stress ALT. The necessity of the life test units at 3-step step-stress is also numerically examined in comparison to simple step-stress setup.
One of the serious challenges in developing rotary compressor with HFC refrigerant is the prediction of scuffing times and wear amounts between vane and roller surfaces. In this study, the tribological characteristics of sliding surfaces using vane-roller geometry of rotary compressor were investigated. The sliding tests were carried out under various sliding speeds, normal loads and surface roughness. During the test, friction force, wear depth, time to failure and surface temperature were monitored. Because severe wear occurred on vane surface, TiN coating was applied on sliding surfaces to prolong the wear life of vane-roller interfaces. From the sliding test it was found that there was the optimum initial surface roughness to break in and to prolong the wear life of sliding surfaces. Depending on the load and speed, the protective layers, which were composed of metallic oxide and organic compound, were formed on sliding surfaces. Those would play an important role in the amounts of friction and wear between roller and vane surfaces.
$(R)-\beta-acetylmercaptoisobutyric$ acid (RAM), a chiral compound, is an important intermediate for the chemical synthesis of various antihypertensive and congestive heart failure drugs. Microorganisms capable of converting $(R,S)-\beta-acetylmercaptoisobutyric$ acid ((R,S)-ester) to RAM were screened from soil microorganisms. A strain of Pseudomonas sp. 1001 screened from a soil sample was selected to be the best. Cells showed an activity of 540 U/mL from culture broth and the enzyme was thermostable up to $70^{\circ}C$. This strain could produce RAM asymmetrically from (R,S)-ester.
Vacuum brazing method has been coming to an important process as one of the new fabricating techniques of metals and alloys. In this study, a vacuum brazing of SUS304 stainless steel with BNi-2 filler metal was carried out in $1{\times}10^{4}$ Torr of vacuum atmosphere. The formation of brittle intermetallic compounds in brazed joints between SUS304 stainless steel and BNi-2 filler metal is a major concern, since they considerably degrade the mechanical properties of joints. To obtain enough stable joining strength, it is necessary to understand the unique properties of brazing process with Ni-based filler metals containing boron. So, in this research we investigated the performance of SUS304/BNi-2 brazed system and the brazed joint properties were evaluated at room temperature by using tensile test. Metallurgical and fractographic analysis were used to characterize the microstructure, the mechanisms of brazing, and joint failure modes.

The GacS/GacA system in the root colonizer Pseudomonas chlororaphis O6 is a key regulator of many traits relevant to the biocontrol function of this bacterium. Proteomic analysis revealed 12 proteins were down-regulated in a gacS mutant of P. chlororaphis O6. These GacS-regulated proteins functioned in combating oxidative stress, cell signaling, biosynthesis of secondary metabolism, and secretion. The extent of regulation was shown by real-time RT-PCR to vary between the genes. Mutants of P. chlororaphis O6 were generated in two GacS-regulated genes, trpE, encoding a protein involved in tryptophan synthesis, and prnA, required for conversion of tryptophan to the antimicrobial compound, pyrrolitrin. Failure of the trpE mutant to induce systemic resistance in tobacco against a foliar pathogen causing soft rot, Pectobacterium carotovorum SCCI, correlated with reduced colonization of root surfaces implying an inadequate supply of tryptophan to support growth. Although colonization was not affected by mutation in the prnA gene, induction of systemic resistance was reduced, suggesting that pyrrolnitrin was an activator of plant resistance as well as an antifungal agent. Study of mutants in the other GacS-regulated proteins will indicate further the features required for biocontrol-activity in this rhizobacterium.

The purpose of this paper is to present a method to estimate the storage life of propellant bag for degradation of breaking load with storage time by using gamma process model. The nitrogen compound generated by natural decomposition of propellants degrades the breaking load of propellant bag with time. The statistical distributions of condition and lifetime with time were shown from the results of accelerated life test of propellant bag cloth at $80^{\circ}C$. It was found that the use of median for life was highly appropriate and the $B_1$ or $B_5$ life should be selectively applied to the quality assurance policy.

In electronics manufacturing processes, soldering process has generally been used in surface mounting technology. Because of environmental restriction, lead free solders as like a SnAgCu ternary system are being used widely. After soldering process, the formation and growth of intermetalic compounds(IMCs) are formed in the interface between solder and Cu substrate as follows isothermal temperature and time. In this studies, therefore, we investigated the effects of the Cu substrate thickness on the IMC formation and growth of Sn-40Pb/Cu and Sn-3.0Ag-0.5Cu/Cu solder joints, respectively. The effect of the Cu thickness in PCB Cu pad and pure Cu plate was analyzed as measuring of thickness of each IMC. After solder was soldered on PCB and Cu plate which have different Cu thickness, we measured the IMC thickness in solder joints respectively. Also we compared with the effectiveness of Cu thickness on the IMC growth. From these results, we calculated the activation energy.
Electromigration characteristics of Sn-3.5Ag flip chip solder bump were analyzed using flip chip packages which consisted of Si chip substrate and electroplated Cu under bump metallurgy. Electromigration test temperatures and current densities peformed were $140{\sim}175^{\circ}C\;and\;6{\sim}9{\times}10^4A/cm^2$ respectively. Mean time to failure of solder bump decreased as the temperature and current density increased. The activation energy and current density exponent were found to be 1.63 eV and 4.6, respectively. The activation energy and current density exponent have very high value because of high Joule heating. Evolution of Cu-Sn intermetallic compound was also investigated with respect to current density conditions.
