Multi-objective optimization was conducted to obtain the optimal configuration of a composite sandwich structure with honeycomb-foam hybrid core subjected to underwater shock waves, which can fulfill the demand for light weight and energy efficient design of structures against underwater blast. Effects of structural parameters on the dynamic response of the sandwich structures subjected to underwater shock waves were analyzed numerically, from which the correlations of different parameters to the dynamic response were determined. Multi-objective optimization of the structure subjected to underwater shock waves of which the initial pressure is 30 MPa was conducted based on surrogate modelling method and genetic algorithm. Moreover, optimization results of the sandwich structure subjected to underwater shock waves with different initial pressures were compared. The research can guide the optimal design of composite sandwich structures subjected to underwater shock waves.
The paper presents the cost optimization of composite floor trusses composed from a reinforced concrete slab of constant depth and steel trusses consisting of hot rolled channel sections. The optimization was performed by the nonlinear programming approach, NLP. Accordingly, a NLP optimization model for composite floor trusses was developed. An accurate objective function of the manufacturing material, power and labour costs was proposed to be defined for the optimization. Alongside the costs, the objective function also considers the fabrication times, and the electrical power and material consumption. Composite trusses were optimized according to Eurocode 4 for the conditions of both the ultimate and the serviceability limit states. A numerical example of the optimization of the composite truss system presented at the end of the paper demonstrates the applicability of the proposed approach.
Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) is a stochastic population based optimization algorithm which has attracted attentions of many researchers. This method has great potentials to be applied to many optimization problems. Despite its robustness the standard version of PSO has some drawbacks that may reduce its performance in optimization of complex structures such as laminated composites. In this paper by suggesting a new variation scheme for acceleration parameters and inertial weight factors of PSO a novel optimization algorithm is developed to enhance the basic version's performance in optimization of laminated composite structures. To verify the performance of the new proposed method, it is applied in two multi-objective design optimization problems of laminated cylindrical. The numerical results from the proposed method are compared with those from two other conventional versions of PSO-based algorithms. The convergancy of the new algorithms is also compared with the other two versions. The results reveal that the new modifications inthe basic forms of particle swarm optimization method can increase its convergence speed and evade it from local optima traps. It is shown that the parameter variation scheme as presented in this paper is successful and can evenfind more preferable optimum results in design of laminated composite structures.

A design optimization is performed for the double-bolted joint in cylindrical composite structures by using a simplified analytical method. This method uses failure criteria for the major failure modes of the bolted composite joint. For the double-bolted joint with a zigzag arrangement, it is necessary to consider an interaction effect between the bolt arrays. This paper proposes another failure mode which is determined by angle and distance between two bolts in different arrays and define a failure criterion for the failure mode. The optimal design for the double-bolted joint is carried out by considering the interactive net-tension failure mode. The genetic algorithm (GA) is adopted to determine the optimized parameters; bolt spacing, edge distance, and stacking sequence of the composite laminate. A purpose of the design optimization is to maximize the burst pressure of the cylindrical structures by ensuring structural integrity. Also, a progressive failure analysis (PFA) is performed to verify the results of the optimal design for the double-bolted joint. In PFA, Hashin 3D failure criterion is used to determine the ply that would fail. A stiffness reduction model is then used to reduce the stiffness of the failed ply for the corresponding failure mode.
In this paper, a parallel micro genetic algorithm was utilized in the optimal design of composite structures instead of a conventional genetic algorithm(SGA). Micro genetic algorithm searches the optimal design variables with only 5 individuals. The diversities from the nominal convergence and the re-initialization processes make micro genetic algorithm to find out the optimums with such a small population size. Two different composite structure optimization problems were proposed to confirm the efficiency of micro genetic algorithm compared with SGA. The results showed that micro genetic algorithm can get the solutions of the same level of SGA while reducing the calculation costs up to 70% of SGA. The composite laminated structure optimization under the load uncertainty was conducted using micro genetic algorithm. The result revealed that the design variables regarding the load uncertainty are less sensitive to load variation than that of fixed applied load. From the above-mentioned results, we confirmed micro genetic algorithm as a optimization method of composite structures is efficient.

The use of advanced composite materials in many engineering structures has steadily increased during the last decade. Advanced composite materials allow the design engineer to tailor the directional stiffness and the strength of materials as required for the structures. Design variables to the design engineer include multiple material systems. ply orientation, ply thickness, stacking sequence and boundary conditions, in addition to overall structural design parameters. Since the vibration and impact strength of composite cylindrical shell is an important consideration for composite structures design, the reliable prediction method and design methodology should be required. In this study, the optimum design of composite cylindrical shell for maximum natural frequency, buckling strength and impact strength are developed by analytic and numerical method. The effect of parameters such as the various composite material orthotropic properties (CFRP, GFRP, KFRP, Al-CFRP hybrid), the stacking sequences, the shell thickness, and the boundary conditions on structural characteristics are studied extensively.
The paper describes an optimization method based on the mathematical model of interaction within multibody 'bridge-track-cars" dynamic system. The interaction is connected with considerable dynamic phenomena influenced by high traffic speed (up to 400 km/h) on high-speed railroads. The trend analysis of a structure is necessary to determine the direction and resource of optimizing the system. Thus, scientific methods of decision-making process are necessary. The process requires a great amount of information analysis dealing with behavior and changes of the "bridge-track-cars system" that consists of mechanisms and structures, including transitions. The paper shows the algorithm of multi-criteria optimization that can essentially reduce weight of a bridge superstructure using big data analysis. This reduction is carried out in accordance with the constraints that have to be satisfied in any case. Optimization of real steel-concrete beam is exemplified. It demonstrates possibility of measures that are offered by the algorithm.
This paper deals with the applicability of extended layerwise optimization method (ELOM) for frequency optimization of laminated composite plates. The design objective is the maximization of the fundamental frequency of the laminated plates. The fibre orientations in the layers are considered as design variables. The first order shear deformation theory (FSDT) is used for the finite element solution of the laminates. Finally, the numerical analysis is carried out to show the applicability of extended layerwise optimization algorithm of laminated plates for different parameters such as plate aspect ratios and boundary conditions.
This paper presents the cost optimization of a composite I beam floor system, designed to be made from a reinforced concrete slab and steel I sections. The optimization was performed by the mixed-integer non-linear programming (MINLP) approach. For this purpose, a number of different optimization models were developed that enable different design possibilities such as welded or standard steel I sections, plastic or elastic cross-section resistances, and different positions of the neutral axes. An accurate economic objective function of the self-manufacturing costs was developed and subjected to design, resistance and deflection (in)equality constraints. Dimensioning constraints were defined in accordance with Eurocode 4. The Modified Outer-Approximation/Equality-Relaxation (OA/ER) algorithm was applied together with a two-phase MINLP strategy. A numerical example of the optimization of a composite I beam floor system, as presented at the end of this paper, demonstrates the applicability of the proposed approach. The optimal result includes the minimal produced costs of the structure, the optimal concrete and steel strengths, and dimensions.
