  • In the present study, the thermal buckling analysis of thick anisotropic laminated composite plates is carried out using the finite strip method based on the higher-order shear deformation theory. This theory accounts for the parabolic distribution of the transverse shear strains through the thickness of the plate and for zero transverse shear stresses on the plate surfaces. Therefore, this theory yields improved results over the Mindlin plate theory and eliminates the need for shear correction factors in calculating the transverse shear stiffness. The critical temperatures of simply supported rectangular cross-ply and angle-ply composite laminates are calculated. The effects of several parameters, such as the aspect ratio, the length-to-thickness ratio, the number of plies, fibre orientation and stacking sequence, are investigated.

  • The performance of ferrite composite microwave absorber has been evaluated as the matching frequency, the matching thickness and the band width. Especially, matching frequency is very important in application of microwave absorber because it determines operating frequency range. In this study, the ferrite composite microwave absorbers consisted Ni-Zn ferrite and Zn2Y ferroxplana were prepared in order to control matching frequency. Then, the variation of the material constants and microwave absorbing characteristics were investigated with various ferrite mixing ratio. The material constants of ferrite composite microwave absorber could be controlled by variation ferrite mixing ratio. Therefore, it was confirm that matching frequency of microwave absorber could be shifted by control of material constants.

  • Composite material consists of more than two materials and make various kinds of composite materials by combining different single materials. Copper clad aluminum composite material is composed of Al and Cu, and it has already been put to practical use in Europe because of its economic benefits. This paper presents the interface bonding according to the variation of extrusion ratio and semi-angle die by observing the interface between Cu and Al using metal microscope. By that result, we can predict the conditions of the interface bonding according to the extruding conditions.

  • Elastic modulus of unidirectional short fiber composite has theoretically derived with the consideration of Poisson's ratios of matrix and fiber. Unidirectional short fiber composite is modeled as an aggregate of grains developed by Kerner. Under the assumption of extra strain at fiber ends, the strain distribution along the fiber's length is determined, and the elastic modulus is derived from this distribution. For the consideration of effects of Poisson's ratio, Kerner's results for particulate composites are adapted as boundary conditions. The effect of differences in Poisson's ratio of fiber and matrix on elastic modulus is studied. Proposed equation shows a good agreement with experimental data of Halpin and Tock, et al.

  • For the stable operation of high speed air spindle, the low rotational inertia and high damping ratio of spindle shafts as well as high fundamental natural frequency are indispensable. Conventional steel spindles are net appropriate for very high speed operation because of their high rotational inertia and low damping ratio. In this study, a high speed spindle composed of carbon fiber epoxy composite shaft and steel flange was designed for maximum critical speed considering minimum static deflection and radial expansion due to bending load and centrifugal force during high speed relation. The stacking angle and the stacking thickness of the composite shaft and the adhesive bonding length of the 7teel flange were selected through vibrational analysis considering static and thermal loads due to temperature rise.

  • In this paper presents bending characteristic of single wall carbon nanotube reinforced functionally graded composite (SWCNTRC-FG) plates. The finite element implementation of bending analysis of laminated composite plate via well-established higher order shear deformation theory (HSDT). A seven degree of freedom and $C^0$ continuity finite element model using eight noded isoperimetric elements is developed for precise computation of deflection and stresses of SWCNTRC plate subjected to sinusoidal transverse load. The finite element implementation is carried out through a finite element code developed in MATLAB. The results obtained by present approach are compared with the results available in the literatures. The effective material properties of the laminated SWCNTRC plate are used by Mori-Tanaka method. Numerical results have been obtained with different parameters, width-to-thickness ratio (a/h), stress distribution profile along thickness direction, different SWCNTRC-FG plate, boundary condition, through the thickness (z/h) ratio, volume fraction of SWCNT.

  • Cable-supported ribbed beam composite slab structure (CBS) is proposed in this study. As a new cable-supported structure, it has many merits such as long span availability and cost-saving. Inspired by the previous research on cable-supported structures, the fabrication and construction process are developed. Pre-stress design method based on static equilibrium analysis is presented. In the algorithm, the iteration convergence can be accelerated and the calculation result can be kept in an acceptable precision by setting a rational threshold value. The accuracy of this method is also verified by experimental study on a 1:5 scaled model. Further, important parameters affecting the mechanical features of the CBS are discussed. The results indicate that the increases of sag-span ratio, depth of the ribbed beam and cable diameter can improve the mechanical behavior of the CBS by some extent, but the influence of strut sections on mechanical behavior of the CBS is negligible.

  • A modeling method for the modal analysis of a rotating cross-ply composite beam based on Timoshenko beam theory is presented. To analyze the composite beam exactly, the effects of shear deformation and rotary inertia are included. Linear differential equations of motion are derived using the assumed mode method. For the modeling, hybrid deformation variables are employed and approximated to derive the equations of motion. The effects of the dimensionless angular velocity and the slenderness ratio parameter on the variations of modal characteristics are investigated

  • In this paper, quasi-static crushing tests of composite circular tubes under axial compression load are conducted to investigate the energy absorption characteristics. Circular tubes used for this experiment are glass/epoxy (GFRP) composite tubes, which is fabricated by the filament winding method. One edge of the composite tube is chamfered to reduce the initial peak load and to prevent catastrophic failure during crushing process. Two suggested trigger mechanisms for the composite tubes are investigated. Crushing modes are mainly affected by thickness/diameter ratio, and average crushing loads are mainly affected by their cross-sections. Energy absorption characteristics vary significantly as a function of the tube geometry, trigger mechanism, t/D ratio and the cross-sectional shape.

  • In this paper, stability analysis is carried out far the out of plane behaviors under compressive loads to the conical direction. It is not easy to obtain the analytic solutions about the stability analysis of anisotropic conical shells consisted of composite materials. For solving this problems, this paper used the finite difference method which is one of the numerical methods. The characteristics of the buckling behaviors of anisotropic laminated composite conical shells may be different according to a variety of causes, that is, the change of fiber angle, material arrangement, radius ratio, shape ratio and so on. The objective of this study is to analyze buckling behaviors of circular conical shells with shear deformation effects and to prove the advantage of composite materials.
