The development of high tenacity, high modulus monofilaments from Polypropylene/Clay nanocomposite has been investigated. Pure sodium montmorillonite nanoclay was modified using hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (HTAB) via an ion exchange reaction. Pure and modified clay were characterized through X-ray diffraction, FTIR and TGA. The modified clay was melt blended with polypropylene (PP) in presence of a swelling agent. Composite filaments from PP/Clay nanocomposite were prepared at different weight percentages of nanoclay and the spinning and drawing conditions were optimized. The filaments were characterized for their mechanical, morphological and thermal properties. The composite PP filaments with modified clay showed improved tensile strength, modulus and reduced elongation at break. The composite filaments with unmodified clay did not show any improvement in tensile strength but the modulus improved. The sharp and narrow X-ray diffraction peaks of PP/nanoclay composite filaments indicate increase in crystallinity in presence of modified clay at small loadings (0.5 %). The improved thermal stability was observed in filaments with modified as well as unmodified clays.

In this study, biocomposite filaments with agricultural by-products can be used in extrusion-based 3D (Three-dimensional) printing. Extrusion-based 3D printing stands as a promising technique owing to its versatility. We hypothesized that bio-filament composite consisted of something derived from agricultural by-products could be used as 3D printing materials that could overcome the drawbacks of PCL (poly-caprolactone). Bio-filament mixed with PCL and agricultural by-products was defined as r-PCL in this study. In order to find it out the optimal mixing ratio of filaments, we had investigated PCL, r-PCL 10%, r-PCL 20%, r-PCL 50% separately. The morphological and chemical characteristics of the filaments were analyzed by FE-SEM (Field emission scanning electron microscope) and EDX (Energy-dispersive X-Ray spectroscopy), and the mechanical properties were evaluated by stress-strain curve, water contact angle, and cytotoxicity analysis. Results of this study have been shown as a promising way to produce eco-friendly bio-filaments composite for FDM (Fused deposition modeling) method based 3D printing technology. Thus, we could establish biomimetic scaffolds based on bio-printer filaments mixed with agricultural by-product.
The analysis in this paper is focused on the pattern of mixing of filaments over a cross-section of hybrid yarns according to different combinations of reinforcement and matrix filament yarns through microscopic view. The volume content of filament in hybrid yarn cross-section was maintained at 50% for both reinforcement and matrix, and the hybrid yarns count at 600 tex throughout the experiments. It was observed from the experiments that diameters of reinforcement and matrix filaments have strong effects particularly on the pattern of mixing of filaments over a cross-section of hybrid yarns such that the hybrid yarns with more or less equal diameters of reinforcement and matrix filaments showed considerably even distributions over the hybrid yarn cross-section. This paper also investigates the possibility of hybridizing carbon/aramid, carbon/glass and aramid/glass matrices through the commingling process. In the experiment, several process parameters were selected and they include pressure, yarn oversupply-rate and different nozzle types. As a result of these experiments, it was concluded that the hybridized materials show better performance than individual reinforced filament yarns in terms of mechanical properties. For small tensile forces, the carbon/glass/matrix combination turned out to be good enough for general purpose applications.
It is hard to get Filaments which are materials of the 3D printing Fused Deposition Modeling(FDM) method as radiation shielding in Korea. and also related research is insufficient. This study aims to provide basic data for the development of radiation shields using 3D printing by evaluating the physical properties and radiation shielding capabilities of filaments containing metal particles. after selecting five metal filaments containing metal particle reinforcement materials, the radiation shielding rate was calculated according to the Korean Industrial Standard's protective equipment test method to evaluate physical properties such as tensile strength, density, X-ray Diffraction(XRD), and weight measurement using ASTM's evaluation method. In the tensile strength evaluation, PLA + SS was the highest, ABS + W was the lowest, and ABS + W is 3.13 g/cm3 which value was the highest among the composite filaments in the density evaluation. As a result of the XRD, it may be confirmed that the XRD peak pattern of the particles on the surface of the specimen coincides with the pattern of each particle reinforcing material powder metal, and thus it was confirmed that the printed specimen contained powder metal. The shielding effect for each 3D printed composite filament was found to have a high shielding rate in proportion to the effective atomic number and density in the order of ABS + W, ABS + Bi, PLA+SS, PLA + Cu, and PLA + Al. In this study, it was confirmed that the metal particle composite filament containing metal powder as a reinforcing material has radiation shielding ability, and the possibility of using a radiation shielding filament in the future.

Nano composite sample were irradiated and annealed to study irradiation induced phase transformation behavior by nano indention technique. The specimens with 3mm in diameter were irradiatied. Polycrystalline nano filaments were broken their shape and tended to be equilibrium shape like facted sphere. The hardness of irradiatied nanocomposites was decreased by annealing which resulted from the grooving of silver filaments.
In this study, 3D printing filaments using recycled polypropylene (rPP) were produced by a single screw extruder. Graphene composite filament was also prepared using electrochemically exfoliated graphene (EEG) as a composite filler by adding 10, and 20 wt% of EEG to rPP. The graphene and rPP were successfully dispersed with great homogeneity, so that 3D filaments were uniformly produced, and their thermal properties increased as the graphene content increased. The mechanical property was also improved when EEG was 10 wt% but decreased when EEG was 20 wt% compared to that of rPP. 3D structures were successfully manufactured using prepared 3D filaments by a conventional 3D printer, and great advantages can be expected in terms of environmental and economical perspective by adopting plastic waste.
Research on the presence or absence of radiation shielding for FDM-type filaments has recently begun to be studied, but filaments with shielding capabilities are not sold in Korea, and not studies yet. Therefore, in this research, we will use HDPE (High Density Polyethylene) as a base material, select bismuth as a reinforcing material to manufacture a composite filament, evaluate the shielding ability, and provide basic data for the development of a radiation shielding composite material using 3D printing.A filament is produced by mixing Bismuth with an effective atomic number 83 with HDPE of PE series and adjusting the content of Bismuth to 20% wt, 30% wt, 40% wt. Compounded filaments were evaluated for their physical properties and shielding capabilities by ASTM evaluation methods. As the bismuth content increases, the density, weight, and tensile strength increase, and the shielding capacity is confirmed to be excellent. As a result of the radiation shielding capacity evaluation, it was confirmed that HDPE (80%) + Bi (20%) showed a shielding rate of 82% at 60 kV and a shielding rate of up to 94% or more at 40% bismuth content. In this study, we confirmed that it was possible to produce a radiation shield that is lighter than the metal particle-containing filaments. Furthermore, that have been shield radiation by using HDPE + Bi filaments, and radiation in the medical and radiation industries. The possibility of using it as a shielding complex was confirmed.

Silicon carbide and its composites are being considered as a nuclear fuel cladding material for LWR nuclear reactors because they have a low neutron absorption cross section, low hydrogen production under accident conditions, and high strength at high temperatures. The SiC composite cladding tube considered in this study consists of three layers, monolith CVD SiC - $SiC_f$/SiC composite -monolith CVD SiC. The volume fraction of SiC fiber and surface roughness of the composite layer affect mechanical and corrosion properties of the cladding tube. In this study, various types of SiC fiber preforms with tubular shapes were fabricated by a filament winding method using two types of Tyranno SA3 grade SiC fibers with 800 filaments/yarn and 1600 filaments/yarn. After chemical vapor infiltration of the SiC matrix, the surface roughness and fiber volume fraction were measured. As filament counts were changed from 800 to 1600, the surface roughness increased but the fiber volume fraction decreased. The $SiC_f$/SiC composite with a bamboo-like winding pattern has a smaller surface roughness and a higher fiber volume fraction than that with a zigzag winding pattern.
The microstructure of Cu-15 wt%Ag composites fabricated by equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) with intermediate heat treatment at $320^{\circ}C$ was investigated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observations. Ag precipitates with a thickness of 20-40 nm were observed in the eutectic region of the Cu-15 wt%Ag composite solution treated at $700^{\circ}C$ before ECAP. The Cu matrix and Ag precipitates had a cube on cube orientation relationship. ECAPed composites exhibited ultrafine-grained microstructures with the shape and distribution dependent on the processing routes. For route A in which the sample was pressed without rotation between each pass, the Cu and Ag grains were elongated along the shear direction and many micro-twins were observed in elongated Cu grains as well as in Ag filaments. The steps were observed on coherent twin boundaries in Cu grains. For route Bc in which the sample was rotated by 90 degrees after each pass, a subgrain structure with misorientation of 2-4 degree by fragmentation of the large Cu grains were observed. For route C in which the sample was rotated by 180 degrees after each pass, the microstructure was similar to that of the route A sample. However, the thickness of the elongated grains along the shear direction was wider than that of the route A sample and the twin density was lower than the route A sample. It was found that more microtwins were formed in ECAPed Cu-15 wt%Ag than in the drawn sample. Grain boundaries were observed in relatively thick and long Ag filaments in Cu-15 wt%Ag ECAPed by route C, indicating the multi-crystalline nature of Ag filaments.
This study surveys the physical properties of DTY composite yarns manufactured by pin, disk and belt texturing systems. For this purpose, 208d/36f POY PET and 40d/12f high shrinkable PET filaments are prepared for specimens. The composite yarns are manufactured with this texturized POY and high shrinkable PET filament using the pin, disk and belt type texturing machines. While the processing conditions of the pin and disk types texturing machines were fixed, those of a belt type texturing machine were varied with over feed to compare and analyze with the yarn physical properties of pin and disk type composite yarns.
