BCB $Resin-BaNd_2Ti_4O_{12}$(BNT) composites with BNT contents were prepared by tape casting method and epoxy resin-BNT composites were prepared by using heating press. Their dielectric properties and microstructures were investigated. The dielectric properties such as dielectric constant and dielectric loss at 1 MHz for epoxy resin-BNT composites and BCB resin-BNT composites are improved with an increase of BNT volume fraction. The dielectric constant of the Epoxy-BNT composite increased from 5.9 to 7.8 as the volume fraction of BNT increased from 15 to 25. The dielectric constant of the BCB-BNT composite increased from 9.1 to 15.5 as the volume fraction of BNT increased from 30 to 50. The dielectric behavior of BCB-BNT system can be explained by Lichtenecker's equation. The dielectric constant of epoxy resin-BNT composite is smaller than that of BCB resin-BNT composite. These results are considered to be related with the dispersion of BNT filler in polymer matrix from the result of SEM photograph.

PURPOSE. Fractures, occlusal adjustments, or marginal corrections after removing excess composite cements result in rough surfaces of all-ceramic FPDs. These have to be polished to prevent damage of the surrounding tissues. The aim of this study was to evaluate the roughness of zirconia, silicate-ceramic, and composite after polish with different systems for intraoral use. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Each set of 50 plates was made of zirconia, silicate-ceramic, and composite. All plates were ground automatically and were divided into 15 groups according to the treatment. Groups Zgrit, Sgrit, and Cgrit received no further treatment. Groups Zlab and Slab received glaze-baking, and group Clab was polished with a polishing device. In the experimental groups Zv, Sv, Cv, Zk, Sk, Ck, Zb, Sb, and Cb, the specimens were polished with ceramic-polishing systems "v", "k", and "b" for intraoral use. Roughness was measured using profilometry. Statistical analysis was performed with ANOVA and $Scheff{\acute{e}}$-procedure with the level of significance set at P=.05. RESULTS. All systems reduced the roughness of zirconia, but the differences from the controls Zgrit and Zlab were not statistically significant (P>.907). Roughness of silicate ceramic was reduced only in group Sv, but it did not differ significantly from both controls (P>.580). Groups Cv, Ck, and Cb had a significantly rougher surface than that of group Clab (P<.003). CONCLUSION. Ceramic materials can be polished with the tested systems. Polishing of interface areas between ceramic and composite material should be performed with polishing systems for zirconia first, followed by systems for veneering materials and for composite materials.
Three-dimensional(3D) printing is a process for producing complex-shaped 3D objects by repeatedly stacking thin layers according to digital information designed in 3D structures. 3D printing can be classified based on the method and material of additive manufacturing process. Among the various 3D printing methods, digital light processing is an additive manufacturing technique which can fabricate complex 3D structures with high accuracy. Recently, there have been many efforts to use ceramic material for an additive manufacturing process. Generally, ceramic material shows low processability due to its high hardness and strength. The introduction of additive manufacturing techniques into the fabrication of ceramics will improve the low processability and enable the fabrication of complex shapes and parts. In this study, we synthesize silica composite material that can be applied to digital light processing. The rheological and photopolymeric properties of the synthesized silica composite are investigated in detail. 3D objects are also successfully produced using the silica composite and digital light processing.
PURPOSE. This in vitro study investigated the repair bond strength of the zirconia ceramic after different aging conditions. MATERIALS AND METHODS. In order to imitate the failure modes of veneered zirconia restorations, veneer ceramic, zirconia, and veneer ceramic-zirconia specimens were prepared and were divided into 4 subgroups as: control ($37^{\circ}C$ distilled water for 24 hours ) and 3000, 6000, 12000 thermal cycling groups (n=15). Then, specimens were bonded to composite resin using a porcelain repair kit according to the manufacturer recommendation. The repair bond strength (RBS) test was performed using a universal testing machine (0.5 mm/min). Failure types were analyzed under a stereomicroscope. Two-way ANOVA and Bonferroni test were used for statistical analysis. RESULTS. The RBS values of zirconia specimens were statistically significant and higher than veneer ceramic and veneer ceramic-zirconia specimens in control, 3000 and 6000 thermal cycling groups (P<.05). When 12000 thermal cycles were applied, the highest value was found in zirconia specimens but there was no statistically significant difference between veneer ceramic and veneer ceramic-zirconia specimens (P>.05). Veneer ceramic specimens exhibited cohesive failure types, zirconia specimens exhibited adhesive failure types, and veneer ceramic-zirconia specimens exhibited predominately mixed failure types. CONCLUSION. Thermal cycling can adversely affect RBS of composite resin binded to level of fractured zirconia ceramics.

Flexible silicon carbide fibrous mats were fabricated by a combination of electrospinning and a polymer-derived ceramics route. Polycarbosilane was used as a solute with various solvent mixtures, such as toluene and dimethylformamide. The electrospun PCS fibrous mats were cured under a halogen vapor atmosphere and heat treated at $1300^{\circ}C$. The structure, fiber morphology, thermal behavior, and crystallization of the fabricated SiC fibrous mats were analyzed via scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and thermal imaging. The prepared SiC fibrous mats were composed of randomly distributed fibers approximately $3{\mu}m$ in diameter. The heat radiation of the SiC fiber mats reached $1600^{\circ}C$ under microwave radiation at a frequency of 2.45 GHz.
Recently, a second generation composite resin system(ceromer) was introduced with significantly improved mechanical properties. The purpose of this study was to compare a ceromer with the other restorative materials and to assess its clinical usefulness. In this study, we used four restorative materials : amalgam (BESTALOY$^{(R)}$), indirect composite resin (Clearfil CR Inlay$^{(R)}$), ceromer (Targis$^{(R)}$) and ceramic (Vintage$^{(R)}$). And then we devided into four groups. The materials of each group were as follows : Amalgam group : BESTALOY$^{(R)}$ (Dong Myung Dental Industrial Co.) Composite Resin group : Clearfil CR Inlay$^{(R)}$ (Kuraray) Ceromer group : Targis$^{(R)}$ Dentin (Ivoclar-Vivadent) Ceramic group : Vintage$^{(R)}$ (Shofu Inc.) According to the above classification, we made samples through the polymerization of BESTALOY$^{(R)}$, Clearfil CR Inlay$^{(R)}$ and Targis$^{(R)}$ with separable cylindrical metal mold and firing of Vintage$^{(R)}$ in a investment mold. And then, we measured and compared the value of compressive strength, diametral tensile strength and Vicker's microhardness of each sample. The results were as follows : 1. Amalgam showed the highest value of compressive strength (390.37${\pm}$42.22MPa) and the value of ceromer was somewhere between ceramic and indirect composite resin. There were significant differences among the experimental groups(p<0.001). 2. Indirect composite resin showed the highest value of diametral tensile strength (74.21${\pm}$15.33MPa) and there was no significant difference with ceromer. Ceromer was higher diametral tensile strength than amalgam and ceramic (p<0.001). 3. Ceramic showed the highest value of microhardness (538.44${\pm}$37.38Hv) and the value of ceromer was somewhere between ceramic and indirect composite resin. There were significant differences among the experimental groups (p<0.001).

A proper estimation of the mechanical properties for composites has been required for better design/selection of constituents for composite materials. Present investigation shows the simulation results for ceramic reinforced metal matrix composite under uniaxial transverse tensile loading. The resulting transverse mean stress with the transverse mean strain was described for composites as a function of the volume fraction with two different types of interfacial bonding: (1)strongly bonded interface, and (2)no bonded interface. A two-dimensional finite element modeling and analysis were conducted based on the unit-cell concept with an assumption of a regular square arrangement of the reinforcement within the composite. The mean stress was generally increased with the ceramic volume fraction for composite with strong interface bonding. The micromechanics concept combined with finite element modeling for composite can be used in order to predict the transverse properties of composites with a priori known properties of constituents.
The permeation characteristics and reclamation efficiency of waste lubricating oil were studied as a function of the types of ceramic composite membranes and the membrane separation process variables. The oil permeability of the TiO2 composite membrane(pore size 0.015 $\mu\textrm{m}$) was directly proportional to the crossflow velocity(0.22∼0.9 m/s) and temperature(150$^{\circ}C$∼200$^{\circ}C$). In the batch concentration process, as the concentration factor increased, both the permeability and the ash content of the permeate decreased. The average ash contents of the total permeate through the A6 alumina membrane(average pore size 0.8$\mu\textrm{m}$), Z1/A6 and Z1/A4(pore size 0.23$\mu\textrm{m}$)/A7(pore size 6$\mu\textrm{m}$) zirconia composite membrances(average pore size 0.07$\mu\textrm{m}$) were about 0.063 wt%, 0.045wt% and 0.08wt% in the region of 1∼2 concentration factor, respectively. The ash content of the mixed permeate through the A6 alumina and zirconia composite membrane was about 0.06 wt% and it can be also reduced to 0.06 wt% in the Z1/A6 membrane and below 0.003 wt% in the TiO2/Z1/A6 membrane. It was concluded that the treated oil obtained from the multi-step membrane separation process could be used as reclaimed lubricating oil as well as reclained fuel oil.
Model equations for the gas permeation through a ceramic composite membrane were derived for examining the existence of crack, the reproducibility, and the microstructural properties of composite membranes. From the results of analyzing the nitrogen permeability data through alumina-tube supported TiO2 and SiO2 composite membranes, the extent of cracking, and the formation and structure of membrane top-layers were modelled. It was proved that the crack-free and reproducible composite membranes could be easily prepared only by the pore-filled coating within pores of the support in the sol-gel coating process.
Hollow silica spheres were prepared by spray drying of precursor solution of colloidal silica. The precursor solution is composed of 10-20 nm colloidal silica dispersed in a water or ethanol-water mixture solvent with additives of tris hydroxymethyl aminomethane. The effect of pH and concentrations of the precursor and additives on the formation of hollow sphere particles was studied. The spray drying process parameters of the precursor feeding rate, inlet temperature, and gas flow rate are controlled to produce the hollow spherical silica. The mixed solvent of ethanol and water was preferred because it improved the hollowness of the spheres better than plain water did. It was possible to obtain hollow silica from high concentration of 14.3 wt% silica precursor with pH 3. The thermal conductivity and total solar reflectivity of the hollow silica sample was measured and compared with those values of other commercial insulating fillers of glass beads and $TiO_2$ for applications of insulating paint, in which the glass beads are representative of the low thermal conductive fillers and the $TiO_2$ is representative of infrared reflective fillers. The thermal conductivity of hollow silica was comparable to that of the glass beads and the total solar reflectivity was higher than that of $TiO_2$.
