HPFRCCs (high-performance fiber reinforced cementitious composites), which is relatively more ductile and has the characteristic of high toughness with high fiber volume fractions, can be used in structures subjected to extreme loads and exposed to durability problems. In the case of PVA (polyvinyl alcohol) fiber, it is noted by former studies that around 2% fiber volume fractions contributes to the most effective performance at HPFRCCs. In this study, flexural tests were carried out to evaluate the flexural behavior of HPFRCCs and to optimize mix proportions. Two sets of hybrid fiber reinforced high performance specimens with total fiber volume fraction of 2 % were tested: the first set prepared by addition of short and long PVA fibers at different combination of fiber volume fractions, and the second set by addition of steel. In addition, in order to assess the performances of the HPFRCCs against to high strain rates, drop weight tests were conducted. Lastly, the sprayed FRP was applied on the bottom surface of specimens to compare their impact responses with non-reinforcing specimens. The experimental results showed that the specimen prepared with 1.6% short fibers (REC 15) and 0.4% long fiber (RF4000) outperformed the other specimens under flexure, and impact loading.
For the homogeneous dispersion of $ZrO_2$ particles in $Al_2O_3/ZrO_2$ceramics, Zr-precusors were mixed with oxide $Al_2O_3$powders by chemical routes such as partial precipitation or partial polymerization of Zr-nitrate solutions. In case of the mechanical mixing of ultrafine $Al_2O_3$ and $ZrO_2$ oxide powders, relatively homogeneous dispersion was difficult to achieve so that the particle size and distributions of $ZrO_2$ were relatively inhomogeneous after sintering at high temperature. But when the Zr-Y-hydroxide were co-precipitated to ultrafine $Al_2O_3$ oxide powders followed by calcinations, homogeneous dispersion of nano-sized $ZrO_2$ particles in $Al_2O_3/ZrO_2$ composite ceramics were obtained. But because of the coalescence of dispersed $ZrO_2$ particles, dispersed $ZrO_2$ was grown up to more than 0.2${mu}m$ (200 nm) when sintered at the temperature of higher than $1500^{\circ}C$ But when the sintering temperature was kept to lower than $1400^{\circ}C$ by using nano-sized $\alpha-alumina$, the particle size of dispersed $ZrO_2$ could be sustained below 0.1 ${\mu}m$. But the coalescence of dispersed $ZrO_2$ between $Al_2O_3$ particles could not be avoided so that the mechanical properties were not enhanced contrary to the expectations. So Zr-polyester precursors were precipitated and coated to the surface of ultrafine $\alpha-alumina$ powders by the polymerization of Ethylene Glycol with Citric Acid and Zirconium Nitrate. By this dispersion much more uniform dispersion of $ZrO_2$ was achieved at $1450\~1600^{\circ}C$ of sintering temperature ranges. And due to especially discrete dispersion of $ZrO_2$ between $Al_2O_3$ particles, their mechanical strength was more enhanced than mechanical mixing or hydroxide precipitation methods.
The mechanical properties of B$_4$C/Al composites normally depend on the species and quantity of reaction products between B$_4$C and Al and then the control of reaction products is necessary to make desirable composites for lightweight advanced or armor materials. TiB$_2$ is chemically inert with aluminum and has a lower contact angle (85$^{\circ}$ at 100$0^{\circ}C$) to liquid aluminum than B$_4$C. Thus, TiB$_2$ coating on B$_4$C may lower infiltration temperature of aluminum when the B$_4$C/Al composites is fabricated by infiltration process. In this study, the effects of TiB$_2$ on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the B$_4$C/Al composites have been investigated. TiB$_2$ coated B$_4$C powder was prepared using the sol-gel technique. It was found that the B$_4$C surface is homogeneously covered with TiB$_2$ having a particles size of 20-50 nm. While the B$_4$C/Al composites prepared by infiltration after TiB$_2$ coating had 17 wt% of unreacted Al, on the other hand, the B$_4$C/Al composites without coating included 14 wt% of Al. As a result, the composites infiltrated after the coating showed higher fracture toughness and lower hardness. This strongly suggests that TiB$_2$ not only lowers the infiltration temperature, but also inhibits the reaction between B$_4$C and Al.
The present study aims to characterize the synoptic climatic patterns of winter extreme low temperature events occurred in different regions of Korea based on daily temperature data observed at 61 weather stations under the supervision of the Korea Meteorological Administation and NCEP/NCAR reanalysis I data for the recent 40 years (1973~2012) period. Analyses of daily maximum and minimum temperatures below 10th percentile thresholds show that high frequencies of winter extreme low temperature events appear across the entire regions of Korea or in either the western or eastern half region divided by major mountain ridges at the 2~7 dayintervals particularly in the first half of the winter period (before mid-January). Composite analyses of surface synoptic climatic data including sea level pressure and wind vector reveal that 13 regional types of winter extreme low temperature events in Korea are closely associated with the relative location and intensity of both the Siberian high pressure and the Aleutian low pressure systems as well as major mountain ridges. Investigations of mid-troposphere (500 hPa) synoptic climatic charts demonstrate that the blocking-like upper troposphere low pressure system advecting the cold air from the Arctic toward the Korean Peninsula may provide favorable synoptic conditions for the outbreaks of winter extreme low temperature events in Korea. These results indicate that the monitoring of synoptic scale climatic systems in East Asia including the Siberian high pressure system, the Aleutian low pressure system and upper level blocking system is critical to the improvement of the predictability of winter extreme low temperature events in Korea.
Response surface methodology (RSM) was used for monitoring the changes of Hunter's color and organoleptic colors of roasted doraji tea with variations in threonine concentration of soaking solution and roasting condition. In soaking and roasting processes based on the central composite design with variations in threonine concentration of soaking solution, roasting temperature and roasting time, coefficients of determinations $(R^{2})$ of the models were above 0.87 (p<0.05) in Hunter's color parameters and organoleptic color. Hunter's color L value of roasted doragi tea was maximized in 0.09% threonine concentration of soaking solution, $142.37^{\circ}C$ and 21.94 min in roasting condition. Hunter's color a value of roasted doragi tea was maximized in 1.24% threonine concentration of soaking solution, $154.01^{\circ}C$ and 28.59 min in roasting condition, minimized in 1.67% threonine concentration of soaking solution, $137.61^{\circ}C$ and 24.62 min in roasting condition, Hunter's color b value of roasted doragi tea was maximized in 1.10% threonine concentration of soaking solution, $154.72^{\circ}C$ and 27.12 min in roasting condition. The maximum quality of organoleptic color of roasted doragi tea was soaked in 1.25% threonine concentration, and roasted at $141.81^{\circ}C$ for 34.14 min.

Response surface methodology (RSM) was applied to monitor the effects of steaming and roasting conditions of Polygonatum odoratum roots an total phenolics content, electron donating ability (EDA) and nitrite-scavenging ability (NSA) of the extract. In steaming and roasting processes based on the central composite design. with variations in steaming time $(60\~180\;min)$, roasting temperature $(110\~150\;min)$ and roasting time $(10\~50\;min)$, coefficients of determinations $(R^2)$ were 0.9356 (p<0.01) in total phenolics, 0.9578 (p<0.01) in EDA and 0.9436 (p<0.01) in NSA (pH 3.0). The maximum value of total phenolics was $2847.67\;mg\%$ at 135.59 min of steaming time, $143.84^{\circ}C$ of roasting temperature and 43.47 min of roasting time. The maximum value of EDA was $75.00\%$ in 108.98 min, $135.56^{\circ}C$ and 48.86 min. The maximum value of NSA (pH 3.0) was $87.38\%$ in 162.80 min, $143.88^{\circ}C$ and 31.97 min, respectively. Total phenolics content of the extract was influenced by heating conditions in the order of roasting temperature, steaming time and roasting time. While EDA and NSA were appreciably influenced by roasting time, followed by roasting temperature and steaming time.
This study was carried out to establish the optimal preparation conditions of yoghurt made from goat milk with reduced goaty flavor by adding citrus concentrate and flavor. A central composite design was applied to investigate the effects of citrus concentrate ratio (0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5%), citrus flavor ratio (0.01, 0.02, 0.03, 0.04, 0.05%) and fructose ratio (3, 4, 5, 6, 7%). The physico-chemical and sensory characteristics of the sixteen yoghurt samples were compared. The addition of citrus concentrate had a significant (p<0.01) effect on the pH, $a^*,\;and\;b^*$ values. Regarding organoleptic properties, the addition of citrus concentrate had a significant (p<0.01) effect on color, and fructose had an effect on overall palatability. The maximum value of organoleptic goaty flavor was 2.35, more than double the minimum value. The optimum conditions predicted for minimizing goaty flavor of the yoghurt were 1.44% citrus concentrate, 0.0357% citrus flavor, and 6.91% fructose.

The electrocatalystic prperties of Pt-Co and Pt-Ni with heteropolyacids (HPAs) entrapped in covalently cross-linked sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (CL-SPEEK)/HPA membranes were investigated for water electrolysis. The HP As, including molybdophosphoric acid (MoPA), and tungstophosphoric acid (TPA) were both used as membrane additives and electrocatalysts. The membrane electrode assembly (MEA) was prepared by a nonequilibrium impregnation-reduction (I-R) method. $Pt(NH_3)_4Cl_2$, $NiCl_2$ and $CoCl_2$ as electrocatalytic materials and $NaBH_4$ as reducing agent were used. I order to enhance electrocatalytic activity, the catalyst layer prepared above was electrodeposited (Dep) with HP A. Surface morphologies and physico-chemical properties of MEA were investigated by means of SEM, EDX and XRD. The electrocatalytic properties of composite membranes such as the cell voltage and coulombic charge in CV were in the order of magnitude: CL-SPEEK/MoPA40 (wt%) > CL-SPEEK/TPA30 > Nafion117. In the optimum cell applications for water electrolysis, the cell voltage of Pt/CL-SPEEK-MoPA40/Pt-Co (Dep-MoPA) and Pt/CL-SPEEK-TPA30/Pt-Co (Dep-TPA) was 1.75 Vat $80^{\circ}C$ and $1\;A/cm^2$ and voltage efficiency was 87.1%. Also, the observed activity of Pt-Co (84:16 atomic ratio by EDX) is a little higher than that of Pt-Ni (86: 14). The current density peak of electrodeposited electrodes were better a little than those of unactivated electrodes based on the same membranes.

There is no adverse opinion on the anticariogenic effect of fluoride, so glass ionomer restoration which release the fluoride is recommended fer child patient. To study the anticariogenic effect of initial carious lesion of fluoride released from adjacent glass ionomer restoration, the in situ model was constructed. A microhardness test, polarized scope investigation and electron probe microanalysis was done for analyzing the distribution of fluoride which was precipitated from glass ionomer restoration to the enamel caries lesion. Fuji IX, the conventional glass ionomer, was used for experimental group and Z-100, composite resin that fluoride was not contained, was used for control group. On the microhardness test, the remineralization was accelerated by fluoride. And on the polarized investigation, the size of caries lesion was reduced in the oral cavity and that phenomenon was accelerated by fluoride, too. Electron probe microanalysis shows that the remineralization was accelerated by fluoride and the fluoride concentration on subsurface area was increased. It maybe that the subsurface area was critical to anticariogenic effect. In summary of these result, initial caries lesion can be remineralized in the oral cavity and that phenomenon can be accelerated by fluoride. The subsurface area of caries lesion was a major part of defense to cariogenic invasion and to conserve the subsurface area, the surface of lesion body have to conserved.

In order to endow with new bioactive functionality from demineralized bone particle (DBP) as natural source to poly(L-lactide) (PLA) synthetic biodegradable polymer, porous DBP/PLA as natural/synthetic composite scaffolds were prepared and compared by means of the emulsion freeze drying and solvent casting/salt leaching methods for the possibility of the application of tissue engineered bone and cartilage. For the emulsion freeze drying method, it was observed that the pore size decreased in the order of 79$\mu\textrm{m}$ (PLA control) > 47$\mu\textrm{m}$ (20% of DBP) > 23 $\mu\textrm{m}$ (40% of DBP) > 15$\mu\textrm{m}$ (80% of DBP). Porosities as well as specific pore areas decreased with increasing the amount of DBR. It can be explained that DBP acts like emulsifier resulting in stabilizing water droplet in emulsion. For the solvent casting/salt leaching method, a uniform distribution of well interconnected pores from the surface to core region were observed the pore size of 80 ∼70 $\mu\textrm{m}$ independent with DBP amount. Porosities as well as specific pore areas also were almost same. For pore size distribution by the mercury intrusion porosimeter analysis between the two methods, the pore size distribution of the emulsion freeze drying method was broader than that of the solvent casting/salt leaching method due to the mechanism of emulsion formation. Scaffolds of PLA alone, DBP/PLA of 40 and 80%, and DBP powder were implanted on the back of athymic nude mouse to observe the effect of DBP on the induction of cells proliferation by hematoxylin and eosin staining for 8 weeks. It was observed that the effect of DBP/PLA scaffolds on bone induction are stronger than PLA scaffolds, even though the bone induction effect of DBP/PLA scaffold might be lowered than only DBP powder, that is to say, in the order of DBP only > DBP/PLA scaffolds of 40 and 80% DBP > PLA scaffolds only for osteoinduction activity. In conclusion, it seems that DBP plays an important role for bone induction in DBP/PLA scaffolds for the application of tissue engineering area.
