The layup optimization by genetic algorithm (GA) for the interlaminar strength of laminated composites with free edge is presented. For the calculation of interlaminar stresses of composite laminates with free edges, extended Kantorovich method is applied. In the formulation of GA, repair strategy is adopted for the satisfaction of given constraints. In order to consider the bounded uncertainty of material properties, convex modeling is used. Results of GA optimization with scattered properties are compared with those of optimization with nominal properties. The GA combined with convex modeling can work as a practical tool for maximum interlaminar strength design of laminated composite structures, since uncertainties are always encountered in composite materials and the optimal results can be changed.
As the use of composite materials of woven structure has expanded to various fields such as automobile and aviation industry, there has been a need for reliability problems and prediction of mechanical properties of woven composites. In this study, finite element analysis for predicting the mechanical properties of composite materials with different weaving structures was conducted to verify similarity with experimental static properties and an effective modeling method was developed. To reflect the characteristics of the weave structure, the meso-scale representative volume element (RVE) was used in modeling. Three-dimensional modeling was carried out by separating the yarn and the pure matrix. Hashin's failure criterion was used to determine whether the element was failed, and the simulation model used a progressive failure model which was suitable for the composite material. Finally, the accordance of the modeling and simulation technique was verified by successfully predicting the mechanical properties of the composite material according to the weave structure.
Computer-aided materials design requires new modeling approaches to characterize and represent fine-grained geometric structures and material compositions at multiple scales. Recently, a dual-Rep approach was developed to model materials microstructures based on a new basis function, called surfacelet. As a combination of implicit surface and wavelets, surfacelets can efficiently identify and represent planar, cylindrical, and ellipsoidal geometries in material microstructures and describe the distribution of compositions and properties. In this paper, these primitive surfacelets are extended and composite surfacelets are proposed to model more complex geometries. Composite surfacelets are constructed by Boolean operations on the primitives. The surfacelet transform is applied to match geometric features in three-dimensional images. The composition of the material near the identified features can then be modeled. A cubic surfacelet and a v-joint surfacelet are developed to demonstrate the reverse engineering process of retrieving material compositions from material images.

Generally, modeling procedure of cross section of composite rotor blade is complicated and time-consuming, because it is made up of various stiffeners and multiple layers of composite materials. For efficient modeling of cross section of composite rotor blade, a modeling program so called KSec2D, which provides a user friendly GUI, is developed by using a 2D modeling algorithm based on set operation. By the developed program KSec2D, a modeling of complicated cross section of rotor blade is carried out. Through the demonstration, the usefulness of developed program in modeling procedure of cross section of composite rotor blade is verified.

Although extensive efforts have been devoted to the optimal design of composite laminated plates in recent years, some practical issues still need further research. One of them is the handling of the uncertainties in material properties, which were ignored in most researches in the past. In this paper, the convex modeling is used in calculating the failure criterion, given as constraint, to consider the uncertain material properties in the thickness optimization. Numerical results show that the optimal thickness increases when the uncertainties of elastic moduli considered, which shows such uncertainties should not be ignored for safe and reliable designs.
Composite laminated structures supported on elastic foundations are being increasingly used in a great variety of engineering applications. Composites exhibit larger dispersion in their material properties compared to the conventional materials due to large number of parameters associated with their manufacturing and fabrication processes. And also the dispersion in elastic foundation stiffness parameter is inherent due to inaccurate modeling and determination of elastic foundation properties in practice. For a better modeling of the material properties and foundation, these are treated as random variables. This paper deals with effects of randomness in material properties and foundation stiffness parameters on the free vibration response of laminated composite plate resting on an elastic foundation. A $C^0$ finite element method has been used for arriving at an eigen value problem. Higher order shear deformation theory has been used to model the displacement field. A mean centered first order perturbation technique has been employed to handle randomness in system properties for obtaining the stochastic characteristic of frequency response. It is observed that small amount of variations in random material properties and foundation stiffness parameters significantly affect the free vibration response of the laminated composite plate. The results have been compared with those available in the literature and an independent Monte Carlo simulation.

To develop an effective geometric modeling is essential in order that precise material properties of the 3-D braided composite can be estimated. in this study RVE(representative volume element) which is the smallest volume element representing whole material properties is developed to estimate the mechanical properties of 3-D flat board shaped braided composite using volume averaging method.
Modeling of thick composite structures for finite element analysis is relatively complicated. 2-D plane elements may cause inaccurate result since the plane stress condition cannot be applicable in these structures. Therefore a 3-D modeling should be used. However, the difficulty to model all the layers with different material properties and ply orientation arise in this case. In this paper, an equivalent modeling is proposed and numerically tested for analysis of thick composite structures. By grouping layers with same material and ply orientation, number of elements through the thickness is remarkably reduced and still the result is close enough to the one from a detail finite element model. MSC/NASTRAN and PATRAN are used for the analysis. The proposed modeling technique has been applied for analysis of composite rotor hub system designed by Korea Aerospace Research Institute(KARI). Using the proposed equivalent modeling technique, we could conduct stress analysis for the hub system and check the safety factor of each part.

Because of their superior mechanical properties to isotropic materials, composite laminated plates are used for many structural applications that require high stiffness-to-weight and strength-to-weight ratios. Composite materials are always subject to a certain amount of scatter in their elastic moduli, but most analyses and designs with the materials are usually conducted by assuming that the material properties are fixed and have no uncertainties. In this paper, a convex modeling approach is introduced to take account of such uncertainties in elastic moduli. It is used with the finite element method to predict the onset of failures in composite laminated plates subject to in-plane loading. Numerical results show that failures begin at the smaller load when the uncertainties of elastic moduli considered and therefore, such uncertainties should be considered at the design stage for the safety and reliability of the structures.
