  • The present research investigates post-buckling behavior of geometrically imperfect tapered curved micro-panels made of graphene oxide powder (GOP) reinforced composite. Micro-scale effects on the panel structure have been included based on strain gradient elasticity. Micro-panel is considered to be tapered based on thickness variation along longitudinal direction. Weight fractions of uniformly and linearly distributed GOPs are included in material properties based on Halpin-Tsai homogenization scheme considering. Post-buckling curves have been determined based on both perfect and imperfect micro-panel assumptions. It is found that post-buckling curves are varying with the changes of GOPs weight fraction, geometric imperfection, GOP distribution type, variable thickness parameters, panel curvature radius and strain gradient.

  • In the present work, the evolution rules for the internal variables including continuum damage factors are obtained using the thermodynamic framework, which are in turn facilitated to derive the elastic-plastic constitutive relation for the particulate composites. Using the Mori-Tanaka scheme, the homogenization on state and internal variables such as back-stress and damage factors is carried out to procure the rate independent plasticity relations. Moreover, the degradation of mechanical properties of constituents is depicted by the distinctive damages such that the phase and interfacial damages are treated individually accordingly, whereas the kinematic hardening is depicted by combining the Armstrong-Frederick and Phillips' back-stress evolutions. On the other hand, the present constitutive relation for each phase is expressed in terms of the respective damage-free effective quantities, then, followed by transformation into the damage affected overall nominal relations using the aforementioned homogenization concentration factors. An emphasis is placed on the qualitative analyses for strain localization by observing the perturbation growth instead of the conventional bifurcation analyses. It turns out that the proposed constitutive model offers a wide range of strain localization behavior depending on the evolution of various internal variable descriptions.

  • This research presents a multi-material topology optimization for functionally graded material (FGM) and nonFGM with elastic buckling criteria. The elastic buckling based multi-material topology optimization of functionally graded steels (FGSs) uses a Jacobi scheme and a Method of Moving Asymptotes (MMA) as an expansion to revise the design variables shown first. Moreover, mathematical expressions for modified interpolation materials in the buckling framework are also described in detail. A Solid Isotropic Material with Penalization (SIMP) as well as a modified penalizing material model is utilized. Based on this investigation on the buckling constraint with homogenization material properties, this method for determining optimal shape is presented under buckling constraint parameters with non-homogenization material properties. For optimal problems, minimizing structural compliance like as an objective function is related to a given material volume and a buckling load factor. In this study, conflicts between structural stiffness and stability which cause an unfavorable effect on the performance of existing optimization procedures are reduced. A few structural design features illustrate the effectiveness and adjustability of an approach and provide some ideas for further expansions.

  • A differential scheme based micromechanical framework is proposed to obtain the effective properties of the saturated concrete repaired by the electrochemical deposition method (EDM) considering the interfacial transition zone (ITZ) effects. The constituents of the repaired concrete are treated as different phases, consisting of (micro-)cracks, (micro-)voids and (micro-)pores (occupied by water), deposition products, intrinsic concrete made up by the three traditional solid phases (i.e., mortar, coarse aggregates and their interfaces) and the ITZs. By incorporating the composite sphere assemblage (CSA) model and the differential approach, a new multilevel homogenization scheme is utilized to quantitatively estimate the mechanical performance of the repaired concrete with the ITZs. The CSA model is modified to obtain the effective properties of the equivalent particle, which is a three-phase composite made up of the water, deposition products and the ITZs. The differential scheme is employed to reach the equivalent composite of the concrete repaired by EDM considering the ITZ effects. Moreover, modification procedures considering the ITZ effects are presented to attain the properties of the repaired concrete in the dry state. Results in this study are compared with those of the existing models and the experimental data. It is found that the predictions herein agree better with the experimental data than the previous models.

  • An exact solution based on refined third-order theory (TOT) has been presented for functionally graded porous curved beams having deep curvature. The displacement field of the refined TOT is derived by imposing the shear free conditions at the outer and inner surfaces of curved beams. The properties of the two phase composite are tailored according the power law rule and the effective properties are computed using Mori-Tanaka homogenization scheme. The equations of motion as well as consistent boundary conditions are derived using the Hamilton's principle. The curved beam stiffness coefficients (A, B, D) are obtained numerically using six-point Gauss integration scheme without compromising the accuracy due to deepness (1 + z/R) terms. The porosity has been modeled assuming symmetric (even) as well as asymmetric (uneven) distributions across the cross section of curved beam. The programming has been performed in MATLAB and is validated with the results available in the literature as well as 2D finite element model developed in ABAQUS. The effect of inclusion of 1 + z/R terms is studied for deflection, stresses and natural frequencies for FG curved beams of different radii of curvature. Results presented in this work will be useful for comparison of future studies.

  • There is an inherent randomness for concrete microstructure even with the same manufacturing process. Meanwhile, the concrete material under the aqueous environment is usually not fully saturated by water. This study aimed to develop a stochastic micromechanical framework to investigate the probabilistic behavior of the unsaturated concrete from microscale level. The material is represented as a multiphase composite composed of the water, the pores and the intrinsic concrete (made up by the mortar, the coarse aggregates and their interfaces). The differential scheme based two-level micromechanical homogenization scheme is presented to quantitatively predict the concrete's effective properties. By modeling the volume fractions and properties of the constituents as stochastic, we extend the deterministic framework to stochastic to incorporate the material's inherent randomness. Monte Carlo simulations are adopted to reach the different order moments of the effective properties. A distribution-free method is employed to get the unbiased probability density function based on the maximum entropy principle. Numerical examples including limited experimental validations, comparisons with existing micromechanical models, commonly used probability density functions and the direct Monte Carlo simulations indicate that the proposed models provide an accurate and computationally efficient framework in characterizing the material's effective properties. Finally, the effects of the saturation degrees and the pore shapes on the concrete macroscopic probabilistic behaviors are investigated based on our proposed stochastic micromechanical framework.
