Effect of the Hole on the Tensile Fatigue Properties of CFRP Laminates

  • The current study assessed the effect of a bolt hole on tensile fatigue properties of CFRP laminates. Two specimens, i.e. $[(0/90)_3]S$, $[(0/45/90/-45)_2]_S$, were analyzed using a finite element method and were experimentally tested for cases, both with and without a hole, whose diameter corresponded to 0.12 times the specimen width. Delamination positions predicted by a 3-dimensional static finite element analysis were matched well to those observed by an ultrasonic imaging system in the middle of fatigue test. A hole whose diameter corresponds to 0.12 times the specimen width caused the fatigue strength to decrease by 9% and 11% under 5 Hz loading frequency, and by 22% and 25% under 10 Hz loading frequency for $[(0/90)_3]_S$ and $[(0/45/90/-45)_2]_S$, respectively. Because the decrease in sectional area due to the hole was normalized in calculation of the tensile strength, a stress concentration around the hole is believed to induce the strength degradation of fatigue specimens. From the finite element analyses, the stress concentration factor around a hole was expected as 8.8 and 9.5 for $[(0/90)_3]_S$ and $[(0/45/90/-45)_2]_S$, respectively.

수평축 풍력발전 시스템용 복합재 회전날개의 피로수명 설계에 관한 연구 (A Study on Fatigue Life Design for Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine Composite Blade)

  • 피로시험은 구조설계에 있어서 필수적인 과정으로서, 구조물의 요구수명 만족여부를 판단하기 위해 수행된다. 본 연구에서는 750㎾급 수평축 풍력발전 시스템용 복합재 회전날개가 요구수명 20년이상 안전하게 운용되어질 수 있는지에 대한 검토를 수행하였다. tan Bond의 실험식과 S-N선형 손상 방법을 사용하여 요구 피로강도를 계산하였으며, 설계된 복합재 회전날개의 유한요소 해석 결과와 비교하기 위해 측정하중 스펙트럼과 Spera의 피로하중 실험식을 이용하여 회전날개에 적용시킬 피로하중을 계산하였다. 계산된 피로하중에 대한 유한요소 해석을 수행하여 검토한 결과, fan Bond의 실험식을 이용하여 예측한 최대 요구 피로강도보다 낮은 범위에 있음을 확인하였다.

  • It could make the LIghtweight Piezoelectric Composite Actuator (LIPCA) damageable by the cyclic large deformation. If the progressive microvoid coalescence of LIPCA interlaminar took place, the decrease of the stiffness and the weakness of stress transmission and fiber bridging effect would make the fatigue characteristics worse suddenly. Therefore, it is required to study the variation of fatigue behavior and interlaminar condition in LIPCA under resonant frequencies. These studies such as the changeable fatigue phase and interlaminar behavior of LIPCA affected by the resonant frequencies should be carried out due to the strong anisotropy of CFRP layer. Hence, these studies are as follows. 1) The residual stresses distribution of interlaminar in LIPCA using the Classical Lamination Theory (CLT). 2) Comparative analysis of interlaminar behavior for the intact LIPCA versus LIPCA containing an artificial delamination during resonant frequency.

Finite strip method in probabilistic fatigue analysis of steel bridges

  • A finite strip method is developed for fatigue reliability analysis of steel highway bridges. Flat shell strips are employed to model concrete slab and steel girders, while a connection strip is formed using penalty function method to take into account eccentricity of girder top flange. At each sampling point with given slab thickness and modulus ratio, a finite strip analysis of the bridge under fatigue truck is performed to calculate stress ranges at fatigue-prone detail, and fatigue failure probability is evaluated following the AASHTO approach or the LEFM approach. After the failure probability is integrated over all sampling points, fatigue reliability of the bridge is determined.

헬리콥터 무베어링 로터 허브 복합재 유연보 피로 안전수명 해석 (Fatigue Safe Life Analysis of Helicopter Bearingless Rotor Hub Composite Flexbeam)

  • 7,000lb 급 헬리콥터를 위한 무베어링 로터 허브 시스템을 설계한 후, 무베어링 로터 허브 시스템의 주요 구성품 중 하나인 유연보에 대해 요구수명 8,000시간을 만족하는지 확인하기 위한 피로해석을 수행하였다. 2차원 탄성 보 모델에 대한 단면 구조해석 방법을 적용하였으며, 정적구조해석을 통해 피로손상에 취약할 것으로 예상되는 두 단면에 대한 피로해석을 수행하였다. 구조해석을 위해 VABS를 사용하여 유연보 단면 형상에 대한 인장, 굽힘 및 뒤틀림 강성을 계산하였고, wohler equation을 적용하여 유연보를 구성하는 두 가지 복합재 소재에 대한 S-N 곡선을 생성하였다. CAMRAD II를 통해 무베어링 로터 시스템의 하중해석을 수행하였으며, 하중해석 결과를 HELIX/FELIX 표준하중 스펙트럼에 적용하여 무베어링 로터 시스템의 하중 스펙트럼을 생성한 후, 이를 통해 피로해석을 수행하였다.

  • 다목적헬리콥터용으로 설계된 복합재 무힌지 로터깃에 대하여 강도저하모델을 활용하여 비행모사 하중스펙트럼에 따라 피로파손 확률분포와 잔여강도 변화거동을 해석하여 피로수명을 예측하였다. 이때 작용하는 피로하중은 실제 헬리콥터 운용상태를 모사하는 무힌지 로터깃의 표준하중스펙트럼인 FELIX 데이터로부터 비행 대 비행 하중스펙트럼을 구성하였고 피로손상이 가장 극심하게 예상되는 깃뿌리 부근의 국부응력스펙트럼은 스킨과 스파의 적층구조해석을 수행함으로써 구하였다.

  • In the conventional reinforced-concrete bridge deck, concrete and steels are likely to be deteriorated and corroded under the influence of noxious environment. To cope with these problems caused in the conventional reinforced-concrete bridge deck, pultruded composite bridge deck, called Delta Deck, is developed. In this paper, local deflection and fatigue characteristics of Delta Deck for DB24 truck load are evaluated through analysis and experiments.

  • The effects of aging of PSF/AS4 laminates on fatigue was studied using the new energy release rate analysis. The analysis by the variational mechanics has been useful in providing fracture mechanics interpretation of matrix microcracking in cross-ply laminates. This paper describes the changes of the critical energy release rate (microcracking toughness) according to the aging period under fatigue loading. The master plot by modified Paris-law gives a characterization of a material system's resistance to microcrack formation. PSF $[0/90_{s}]_{s}$ laminates were aged at four different temperature based on the glass transition temperature for 0 to 60 days. At all temperatures, the toughness decreased with aging time. The decrease of the toughness at higher temperature was faster than at lower temperature. To assess the effects of aging on fatigue, the unaged laminates were compared with the laminates which had been aged for 60 days at 170$^{\circ}C$ near 180 $^{\circ}C$ t$_g$. The slope of dD/dN versus ${\Delta}G_m$. of the aged laminates was lower than that of the unaged laminates. There was a significant shift of the aged data to formation of microcracks at the lower values of ${\Delta}G_m$.

Fatigue reliability analysis of welded joints of a TLP tether system

  • Tethers of Tension Leg Platform (TLP) are a series structural system where fatigue is the principal mode of failure. The present study is devoted to the fatigue and fatigue fracture reliability study of these tethers. For this purpose, two limit state functions have been derived. These limit state functions are based on S-N curve and fracture mechanics approaches. A detailed methodology for the reliability analysis has then been presented. A sensitivity analysis has been carried out to study the influence of various random variables on tether reliability. The design point, important for probabilistic design, is located on the failure surface. Effect of wind, water depth, service life and number of welded joints are investigated. The effect of uncertainties in various random variables on tether fatigue reliability is highlighted.

차량용 도어 힌지의 경량화를 위한 재질별 수명 예측 (Analysis on Life Prediction for Different Materials in Vehicle Door Hinge Lightweight Design)

  • Environmental issues are attracting increasing interest worldwide, and accordingly, environmental regulations for vehicles are being made more stringent. As a result, the car industry is conducting studies focusing on fuel efficiency and lightweight vehicles. To manufacture lightweight vehicles, existing steel parts are replaced by composite materials and lightweight metals. In this study, the fatigue life of a new material for manufacturing lightweight car door hinges was predicted using a finite-element analysis program. The existing steel material was replaced by carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) and aluminum alloy 6061, and the test results were analyzed. The maximum stress decreased by approximately three times, whereas the fatigue life and safety factor increased. When only CFRP was used, its allowable stress, safety factor, and fatigue life were excellent, but the sagging of the product exceeded the allowable value, which posed a limitation in use. Therefore, it seems desirable to use an appropriate combination of steel, AA6061, and CFRP for this product.
