Botanic gardens are steadily increasing based on people's increased interests in environment and ecology, lengthened leisure hours and improved transportation. However, similar florae and undifferentiated display are considered as problems, while their functions, purposes and characteristics have been more diversified. This study aims to investigate the present conditions and problems of display at botanic gardens and to find out solutions to make them exhibit plants through various ways of display and have their own characteristic, through a case study of seven botanic gardens. As botanic gardens are being recognized as a cultural institution, they should have limitations in the aspect of places that simply collect and exhibit rare plants. The current problems are unclear setting of design goals and communication with visitors. The gardens should escape from the existing supplier-oriented view to a visitor-oriented view, thinking about what the visitors will be able to see and get there. In particular, their display lacks differency, aesthetics, eye-level display, and multi-layered display. In addition to the essential functions of collecting the world's plants, exhibiting them according to purposes and giving scientific learning, botanic gardens should also show a sense of seasons with plants, trigger interests and amusement through unique plants, make visitors more interested in florae and closer to plants, and include social functions. Botanic gardens should be capable of leaning resources display, speciated display, complex and convergent garden-type display, and display fit for local and cultural contexts.
Many monoterpen-erivatives are contained in edible plants. Some monoterpen-derivatives have been assessed as negative factors in the food safety. Among them thuone and 4-caranone are important toxic constituents of many plant essential oils. In this study, convenient detection methods of thujone and 4-caranone in oil were developed. The colour reactions of toxic thujone and 4-caranone were performed in oder to detect those in foods and oils. Sodium pentacyanonitrosylferrate (II) react with thujone to produce thujzoximinocarboxylic acid which becomes the six ligand in the ferrate complex (red colour reaction for thujone). Sodium pentacyanonitrosylferrate (II) cleaves 4-caranone to the red ferrate complex of caranketonic acid.
This study was to evaluate the effect of the moisturizing cream containing five kinds of plants extracts for human facial improvements such as hydrating ability, transepidermal water loss and erythema reaction. The antioxidant activities of yellowish natural colorants, extracted from five kinds of plants (Ceramium kondoi, Phellodendron amurense, Carthamus tinctorius, Gardenia jasminoides for. grandiflora and Aphis chinensis) were tested. Twenty-one volunteers were subjected to analyze the effects, and each result was determined by treating the complex cream containing plants extracts on their skin in three times. The moisture content on skin was significantly increased more than 50% by treating the cream containing five kinds of plants extracts. The transepidermal water loss was reduced and the level of the skin erythema reaction was improved after treatment of the complex cream. Survey analysis showed that the volunteers had highly satisfaction on the tested creams. The results suggest that the complex cream containing five plants extracts had an improved effect on facial skin, and therefore can be used as moisturizing ingredients in the related industry.

In order to screen for the best species for mitigating air pollutants by plants at an industrial complex area, we investigated antioxidant capacity, lipid peroxidation and nitrogen content in the leaves of 27 taxa of woody plants that are mostly utilized as roadside trees. Among 27 taxa, the highest value of antioxidant capacity was given by Cedrus deodara (91.4%) and the lowest one was by Firmiana simplex (56.9%). At lipid peroxidation level, little malondialdehyde (MDA) was observed in Lagerstroemia indica and Ginkgo biloba, but Platanus occidentalis, Castanoposis cuspidata var, sieboldii, Machilus thunbergii and Juniperus chinensis showed high MDA content. Antioxidant capacity of the deciduous woody plants was not significantly different in comparison with that of the evergreen ones. But MDA content of the deciduous woody plants was lower than that of the evergreen ones. The 27 taxa of woody plants appeared to be classified into four types: those of high antioxidant capacity and low lipid peroxidation, those of high antioxidant capacity and high lipid peroxidation, those of low antioxidant capacity and low lipid peroxidation, and those of low antioxidant capacity and high lipid peroxidation. The taxa included in these types are 7 (first type), 6 (second one), 8 (third one) and 6 (fourth one) taxa. first or second type species which have a high antioxidant capacity represented low nitrogen content in their leaves. However, third or forth type species which have low antioxidant capacity showed high nitrogen content in their leaves. Metasequoia glyptostroboides, Platycarya strobilacra and P. occidentalis which belong to the first or second type had extraordinarily high antioxidant capacity and high nitrogen content. Thus, three species are considered to be good phytoremediators for an industrial complex area.
A diffusion model of radioactive gaseous effluents is improved to apply for domestic nuclear power plants. Up to now, XOQDOQ computer code package developed by U. S NRC has been used for the assessment of radioactive plume dispersion by normal operation of domestic nuclear power plants. XOQDOQ adopts the straight-line Gaussian plume model which was basically derived for the plane terrain. However, since there are so many mountains in Korea, the several shortcomings of XOQDOQ are improved to consider the complex terrain effects. In this work, wind direction change is considered by modifying the wind rose frequency using meteorological data of the local weather stations. In addition, an effective height correction model, a plume reduction model due to plume penetration into mountain, and a wet deposition model are adopted for more realistic assessments. The proposed methodology is implemented in Yongkwang nuclear power plants, and can be used for other domestic nuclear power plants.

Although the evolution of Arabidopsis thaliana and humans diverged approximately 1.6 billion years ago, recent studies have demonstrated that protein function and cellular processes involved in disease response remain remarkably conserved. Particularly, γ-secretase, a multisubunit protein complex that participates in intramembrane proteolysis (RIP) regulation, is also known to mediate the cleavage of more than 80 substrates including the amyloid precursor protein (APP) and the Notch receptor. Although the genes (PS1/2, APH-1, PEN-2, and NCT) coding for the γ-secretase complex components are present in plant genomes, their function remains largely uncharacterized. Given that the deposition of 42 amino acid long amyloid-β peptides (hAβ42) is thought to be one of the main causes of Alzheimer's disease, we aimed to examine the physiological effects of hAβ42 peptides on plants. Interestingly, we found that Arabidopsis protoplast death increased after 24 h of exposure to 3 or 5 µM hAβ42 peptides. Furthermore, transgenic Arabidopsis plants overexpressing the hAβ42 gene exhibited changes in primary root length and silique phyllotaxy. Taken together, our results demonstrate that hAβ42 peptides, a metazoan protein, significantly affect Arabidopsis protoplast viability and plant morphology.

Ageing has been known to be deeply related to oxidative activities. Furthermore, inflammation is a response initiated by conditions such as infection and injury. It has been known that complex connections occur between oxidative stress and the inflammatory response, however underlying mechanism needs to be investigated. Chinese resource plants have been widely used as functional food and medicine for a long time, however it is not studied well how many of these resource plants work. We first decided testing anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory activities with 95% ethanol extracts of the chinese resource plants, Boehmeria pilosinscula (Blume) Hassk., Carlemannia tetragona Hook f. and Clausena emarginata C.C.Huang. To measure anti-oxidant activity, we performed DPPH assay in Raw264.7 cells with 95% ethanol extracts. Clausena extracts showed significantly higher anti-oxidant activity than those of Boehmeria and Carlemannia. We then performed Nitric Oxide assay to measure the inflammation suppression levels with 95% ethanol extracts of these plants. Clausena extracts showed significantly higher suppression of nitric oxide production than those of Boehmeria and Carlemannia. This indicates that inflammation levels are significantly reduced by Clausena. After measuring anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory activities, we then performed MTT assay to measure the cell survival rate of Raw264.7 cells treated with these extracts. Boehmeria showed much more cell survival rate than Carlemannia and Clausena. Taken together, this result suggests that Clausena extracts have more anti-oxidant and antiinflammatory activities than Boehmeria and Carlemannia, while Boehmeria extracts have more cell survival rate than Carlemannia and Clausena.
A karyotype of cytotype BB plant in Scilla scilloides Complex was established and the frequency of B-chromosomes were investigated. Chromosome complements of BB genome were composed of five pairs of subtelocentric and four pairs of metacentric chromosomes. Chromosome 1 has satellite with nucleolar organizer. Polymorphism was found in chromosome 2. The karyotype of cytotype BB will be available for analysis of genome composition in various cytotypes of S. scilloides Complex. The frequency of B-chromosome was 78.6%. Numbers of B-chromosome ranged from 1 to 4 and plants with 2B-chromosomes were predominant (57.2%). Two type of B-chromosomes, F and F', were found; F is a large iso-chromosome and F' a small one.

A preliminary survey on the incidence and intensity of root disease complex (association of Meloidogyne incognita and root rot pathogens) was carried out in the sericultural areas of Karnataka. A total of 280 mulberry gardens were surveyed in 14 districts of Karnataka belonging to different types of soil (red sandy, red loamy and black cotton), farming systems (irrigated and rainfed), varieties (V-1, K-2, Local and S-13) and age of the plants (0-5, 5-10 and 10-15 years). It was observed that the association of M. incognita with Botryodiplodia theobromae and Fusarium solani causes the root disease complex in mulberry. Of the 280 gardens visited, 94 were infested with the disease complex and incidence was recorded as 33.6%. The higher intensity of root disease complex was observed when the root system had more than 100 galls/plant with infection of mixed population of B. theobromae and F. solani in sandy soil under irrigated farming. The 5-10 years old mulberry plantation with V-I variety was found to be most susceptible to root disease complex. Districts like Mysore, Kolar, Mandya, Tumkur, Chitradurga and Bangalore were observed as sensitive areas. Further, the wounds caused by M. incognita in mulberry roots favour the easy entry of root rot pathogens, which increased the severity of the disease very fast.
A survey of virus infection in garlic plants cultivated in Korea was conducted for three years. Most virus-infected garlic plants (Allium sativum) showed typical symptoms on the leaves such as yellow mosaic, stripes, and distortion. Through immunosorbent electron micro-scopy and RT-PCR analysis, the complex mixtures of viruses including garlic viruses of the genus Allerivirus, gaylic strain of Leek yellow stripe virus of the genus Potyvirus, and Garlic latent virus of the genus Carlavirus were identified in the virus-infected garlic plants. Among these viruses, Allexivirus was the most frequently detect-ed in the regions surveyed. Using sets of differential primers for Allexivirus genomes, two members of the genus were amplified and sequenced from the purified viruses. The deduced amino acid sequences for the coat proteins and the nucleic acid binding proteins of two viruses showed high homologies to Garlic virus A (CarV-A) and Garlic virus D (GarV-D) of Allekivirus. This is the first report of GarV-A and GarV-D in Korea. This suggests that Allexivirus in gavlic plants in Korea was mixed and varied. Phylogenetic analyses showed that the genus Allexivirus was diversi(ied by the processes of accumulation and evolution of viruses in garlic plants due to the long period of repeated vegetative propagation.
