An immersed boundary method(IBM, Kim et al.(2001)) for simulating flows over complex geometries is applied to computation of three-dimensional Floquet stability of a periodic wake. Floquet stability analysis is employed to extract different modes of three-dimensional instability. To verify the present method, a fully-resolved Floquet stability calculation for flow past a circular cylinder is considered. There are two different instability modes with long(mode A) and short (mode B) spanwise wavelengths for the periodic wake of a circular cylinder. The critical Reynolds number and the most unstable spanwise wavelengths of modes A and B are computed using the present method, and compared with other authors' results currently available.

In product design, the initial design stage is being increasingly emphasized because it significantly influences the successive product development and production stages. However, for larger and more complex products, it is very difficult to accurately predict product reliability in the initial design stage. Various design methodologies have been proposed to resolve this issue, but maintaining reliability while exploring design alternatives is yet to be achieved. Therefore, this paper proposes a methodology for conceptual design considering reliability issues that may arise in the successive detailed design stages. The methodology integrates the independency of axiomatic design and the hierarchical structure of failure mode, effects, and criticality analysis (FMECA), which is a technique widely used to analyze product reliability. We applied the proposed methodology to a liquefied natural gas fuel gas supply system to verify its effectiveness in the reliability improvement of the design process.
One of the major components for performance based seismic design is accurate estimation of critical seismic demand parameters. While nonlinear seismic analysis is the most appropriate analysis method for estimation of seismic demand parameters, this method is very time consuming and complex. Single mode pushover analysis method, N2 method and multi-mode pushover analysis method, modal pushover analysis (MPA) are two nonlinear static methods that have recently been used for seismic performance evaluation of few lateral load-resisting systems. This paper further investigates the applicability of N2 and MPA methods for estimating the seismic demands of ductile unstiffened steel plate shear walls (SPSWs). Three different unstiffened SPSWs (4-, 8-, and 15-storey) designed according to capacity design approach were analysed under artificial and real ground motions for Vancouver. A comparison of seismic response quantities such as, height-wise distribution of floor displacements, storey drifts estimated using N2 and MPA methods with more accurate nonlinear seismic analysis indicates that both N2 and MPA procedures can reasonably estimates the peak top displacements for low-rise SPSW buildings. In addition, MPA procedure provides better predictions of inter-storey drifts for taller SPSW. The MPA procedure has been extended to provide better estimate of base shear of SPSW.

When the center of stiffness and the center of mass of the structure differ under the seismic load, torsion is caused by eccentricity. In this study, an analysis model was modeled in which the positions of the core and the plane rotation axis of a 60-story torsional atypical structure with a plane rotation angle of 1 degree per floor were different. The structural behavior of the analysis model was analyzed, and the earthquake response behavior of the structure was analyzed based on the time history analysis results. As a result, as the eccentricity of the structure increased, the eccentricity response was amplified in the high-rise part, and the bending and torsional behavior responses were complex in the low-order vibration mode. As a result of the analysis, the maximum displacement and story drift ratio increased due to the torsional behavior. The maximum story shear force and the story absolute maximum acceleration showed similarities for each analysis model according to the shape of the vibration mode of the analysis model.

Conventional slope stability analysis is focused on calculating minimum factor of safety or maximum probability of failure. To minimize inherent uncertainty of soil properties and analytical model and to reflect various analytical models and its failure shape in slope stability analysis, slope stability analysis method considering simultaneous failure probability for multi failure mode was proposed. Linear programming recently introduced in system reliability analysis was used for calculation of simultaneous failure probability. System reliability analysis for various analytical models could be executed by this method. Optimum design to determine angle of a simple slope is executed for multi failure mode using linear programming. Because of complex consideration for various failure shapes and modes, it is possible to secure advanced safety by using simultaneous failure probability.

Brake Moan is a laud and strong noise occurring at any vehicle speed over 2 mph as a low frequency in below 600Hz. In this study, we targeted to shift the unstable mode that causes the brake moan from the moats frequency range to sufficiently higher frequency range to avoid the moan phenomenon. We simulated the finite element model and found out the nodes in which the brake moan occurs the most and we regarded the boundary and its relationship between the brake pad and the rotor as a spring coefficient k. With the binary set of the spring coefficient k, we finally used genetic algorithm (GA) to get the optimal topology of the brake pad and its shape to avoid the brake moan. The final result remarkably shows that genetic algorithm can be used in topology optimization procedures requiring complex eigenvalue problems.

Knowledge of the complex biomechanical behavior of the human mandible is of great importance in various clinical situations. Various approaches can be used to evaluate the physical behavior of bone. In this study, we developed the voxel mesh program(Bionix) and generated FE models of mandible using Bionix and using handmade work and compared them with free vibration results derived from finite element analysis(FEA). The data of FE models based on DICOM File exported from Computed tomography(CT). Comparing the two models, we found a good correlation about mode type and natural frequency. The voxel based finite element mesh is a valid and accurate method to predict parameters of the complex biomechanical behavior of human mandibles.
We present finite element equations in the Laplace-domain for linear viscoelastic and viscoelstically damped structures governed by a constitutive equation involving factional order derivative opeartors. These equations yield a nonstandard eigenproblem consisted of frequency dependent stiffness matrix. To solve this nonstandard eigenproblem we suggest an eigenvalue iteration procedure in the Laplace-domain. Improved Zenor and GHM material function type constitutive equations in the Laplace-domain are also available for this procedure. From above equations, complex eigenvalues and complex eigenvectors are obtained. Using obtained eigenvalues and eigenvectors, time domain analysis is performed by means of mode superposition. Finally, finite element solutions of viscoelastic and viscoeleastically damped sandwich beam are presented as an example.
Hippuryl-L-histidyl-L-leucine(HHL) is widely used as a substrate of angiotensin converting enzyme(ACE) cleaving the neurotransmitter angiotensin(I) to the octapeptide angiotensin(II). The structure of the substrate molecules should provide information regarding the geometric requirements of the ACE active site. For the purpose of determination of in vivo reaction, metallo(Cu, Zn)-HHL complexes were synthesized and the degree of complex formation were identified by MALDITOF, ESI mass spectrometric analysis. Tn addition, the pH-dependent species distribution curves were obtained by potentiometric titration. Nitrogen atoms of imidazole ring and oxygen atom of caboxylate groups in the peptide chain were observed to be participated in the metal complex formation. After purification of complexes further structural characterization were made by utilizing UV-Vis, electrochemical methods and NMR. Complete NMR signal assignments were carried out by using 2D-spectrum techniques COSY, TOCSY, NOESY, HETCOR. A complex that two imidazole and carboxylate groups are asymmetrically participating to coordination mode was predicted to the solution-state structure of $Cu(II)-HHL_2$ based on $^{13}C-NMR$ signal assignment and NOE information.

To lunch the Korea Space Launch Vehicle-II(KSLV-II), a second launch complex will be built at the Naro Space Center, and a Kerosene Filling System (KFS) will be installed. KFS of KSLV-II launch complex system is being designed based on Naro Launch Complex. But this must supply fuel to fuel tanks of the vehicle with only a supply pump because KSLV-II is a 3-stage launch vehicle unlike Naro Launch Vehicle or Test Launch Vehicle (TLV). A sudden rise of pump output pressure is recognized during fuel filling scenario selection process. This occurs because return flow can not actively deal with much flow change using the orifice-type flow-control method. To solve this problem, it is verified that fuel can be stably supplied by installing an accumulator, designed for appropriate adjustment of filling-mode change sequence via flow analysis of various cases.
