To test the efficiency of the BDD electrode for complete mineralization of organic wastewater, phenol and 2-chlorophenol (2-CP) were treated electrochemically with both an active Pt/Ti electrode and a nonactive boron doped diamond (BDD) electrode, respectively, in neutral aqueous medium. Aqueous solutions of both phenol and 2-chlorophenol were treated electrochemically using an in-house fabricated flow through electrochemical cell (FTEC). The experimental variables included current input, treatment time, and the flow rate of the solutions. Depending on the magnitude of the applied current and reaction time, the compounds were either completely degraded or partially oxidized to other intermediates. Removal efficiencies reached as high as 93.2% and 94.8% both at the Pt/Ti electrode and BDD electrode, respectively, at an applied current of 200 mA for a 3.0 hr reaction and a flow rate of 4 mL/min. The BDD electrode was much more efficient for the complete mineralization of phenol and 2-chlorophenol than the Pt/Ti electrode.
The fusion between protoplasts of Ganoderma applanatum and oidia of Lyophyllum ulmarium (Hypsizigus marmoreus) was induced with polyethylene glycol and $CaCl_2$. When transferred to Ganoderma complete medium plates, fusants showed mixed morphologies both parents. During three times subcultivation the fusants were changed similar to those of L. ulmarium type. All fusants produced oidia, clamp connections and basidiocarps similar to those of L. ulmarium. Isozyme pattern of esterase of interorder fusants showed both parental and non-parental bands. Each individual fusant did not showed both parental and non-parental bands. Each individual fusant did not show any differences in mycelial growth rate, colony morphology, esterase band pattern and basidiocarp.

With the advancement of industry, the use of various sustainable energy sources and solutions to problems affecting the environment are being actively requested. From this point of view, it is intended to directly burn unused biogas to use it as energy and to solve environmental problems such as greenhouse gases. In this study, a new type of cavity matrix combustor capable of low-emission complete combustion without complex facilities such as separation or purification of biogas produced in small and medium-sized facilities was proposed, and CFD numerical calculation was performed to understand the performance characteristics of this combustor. The cavity matrix combustor consists of a burner with a rectangular porous microwave receptor at the center inside a 3D cavity that maintains a rectangular parallelepiped shape composed of a porous plate that can store heat in the combustor chamber. As a result of numerical calculation, the biogas supplied to the inlet of the combustor is converted to CO and H2, which are intermediate products, on the surface of the 3D matrix porous burner. And then the optimal combustion process was achieved through complete combustion into CO2 and H2O due to increased combustibility by receiving heat energy from the microwave heating receptor.

This paper presents an optimization framework of electrical impedance tomography for characterizing electrical conductivity profiles of concrete structures in two dimensions. The framework utilizes a partial-differential-equation(PDE)-constrained optimization approach that can obtain the spatial distribution of electrical conductivity using measured electrical potentials from several electrodes located on the boundary of the concrete domain. The forward problem is formulated based on a complete electrode model(CEM) for the electrical potential of a medium due to current input. The CEM consists of a Laplace equation for electrical potential and boundary conditions to represent the current inputs to the electrodes on the surface. To validate the forward solution, electrical potential calculated by the finite element method is compared with that obtained using TCAD software. The PDE-constrained optimization approach seeks the optimal values of electrical conductivity on the domain of investigation while minimizing the Lagrangian function. The Lagrangian consists of least-squares objective functional and regularization terms augmented by the weak imposition of the governing equation and boundary conditions via Lagrange multipliers. Enforcing the stationarity of the Lagrangian leads to the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker condition to obtain an optimal solution for electrical conductivity within the target medium. Numerical inversion results are reported showing the reconstruction of the electrical conductivity profile of a concrete specimen in two dimensions.
Purpose: In order to overcome the limitations of the conventional cryopreserved fibroblast or keratinocyte allograft method used in the treatment of diabetic foot ulcers, we reported a pilot study in 2004 demonstrating promising results of a fresh fibroblast allograft method in eight patients. However, the number of cases was insufficient for full evaluation and the follow-up duration was not long enough to determine the efficacy and safety of the method. This encouraged us to conduct this follow-up study to fully evaluate the use of noncryopreserved fresh human fibroblast allografts in treating diabetic foot ulcers. Methods: Thirty-seven patients with diabetic foot ulcers were treated using fresh fibroblast allografts. Human dermal fibroblasts from healthy teenagers were cultured in DMEM/F-12 medium supplemented with 10% serum. The cultured cells were applied on the wounds immediately following debridement, with fibrin being used as a cell carrier. In eight weeks, percentages of complete healing, mean healing time, and patient satisfactions were assessed, with follow-up time ranging from 6 to 40 months. Results: Our study showed that 83.8% of the treated patients were complete healed. The time required for complete healing was $30.9{\pm}10.1$ days. Patient satisfaction scores for the experimental treatment were higher than those for the conventional method(mean scores of $8.1{\pm}1.1$ and $4.8{\pm}1.4$, respectively). No adverse events related to the study treatment occurred. Conclusion: The use of fresh human fibroblast allografts was found to be a safe and effective treatment for diabetic foot ulcers.
The present study was conducted to observe the effect of osmolality of glycerolated TEST-yolk glycerol extenders on post-thawing sperm kinematics of ram spermatozoa of the native Malpura breed maintained in a semi-arid tropical environment. Good quality semen obtained from adult rams was pooled, split and diluted to 1,000 million spermatozoa per ml in complete TEST-yolk-glycerol extenders of 900, 1,200, 1,500 and 1,800 mOsm/kg osmolality. Diluted semen samples were loaded in 0.25 ml straws and cooled down to $-125^{\circ}C$ freezing temperature at the rate of $-25^{\circ}C$ per minute under controlled conditions before plunging into liquid nitrogen for storage. The thawing of straws was performed at $50^{\circ}C$ in a water bath for 10 seconds and sperm kinematics of the frozen-thawed spermatozoa were assessed by a computer-assisted sperm analysis technique. Osmolality of diluent had no significant effect on post-thawing % motility, % rapid, % medium and % slow moving frozen-thawed spermatozoa but significantly (p< 0.05) affected the % linearity and % straightness. The post-thawing % motility and % rapid motile spermatozoa were highest in samples extended in diluent of 1,500 mOsm/kg osmolality and lowest in 900 mOsm/kg. The curvilinear velocity of spermatozoa was significantly (p<0.05) higher for samples extended in 1,800 mOsm/kg, compared to those in 900 and 1,200 mOsm/kg, but the effect was not significantly different to those extended in diluent of 1,500 mOsm/kg osmolality. The study indicated that ram spermatozoa could tolerate a wide osmolality range for dilution in the complete TEST-yolk-glycerol extender for their cryosurvival. The highest recovery of motile spermatozoa following thawing was achieved in samples extended in the TEST-yolk-glycerol diluent of 1,500 mOsm/kg osmolality.

Background: Subscapularis tendon insertion at the first facet has separate layers (deep and superficial). The purpose of this study is to evaluate postoperative clinical outcomes and radiological healing according to each layer of detachment in the first facet involving subscapularis tendon tear. Methods: Eighty-three patients who underwent arthroscopic repair due to First facet involving the scapularis tendon tear accompanying small to medium sized posterosuperior cuff tear were classified into three groups (group A: deep layer partial detachment, group B: deep layer complete detachment, but no superficial layer detachment, and group C: deep layer and superficial layer complete detachment). Subscapularis tendon healing was evaluated using computed tomography arthrogram and clinical result was evaluated using American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (ASES) shoulder score, Constant score and University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) shoulder score. Results: Retear rate of the subscapularis tendon was 2.2%, 18.2%, and 33.3% in group A, group B, and group C, respectively. These rates showed statistically significant difference among the three groups, which were classified by deep and superficial layer detachment in the first facet (p=0.003). Group A showed significant difference in subscapularis tendon healing compared with group B and group C (p=0.018 and p<0.001, respectively), but there was no statistical difference between group B and group C (p=0.292). Regarding clinical outcomes, there was no significant difference among three groups in ASES and UCLA score at final follow-up (p=0.070 and p=0.106, respectively). Conclusions: Complete detachment of deep layer may be related with retear occurrence regardless with detachment of superficial layer, but clinical outcome may not be related with each layer detachment in the first facet involving subscapularis tendon tear.
The resin infusion method is the latest technology of FRP laminating and cleaning to improve FRP hull quality. This method is focused on how to arrange infusion channels for the laminiating strategy. The laminating strategy using the resin infusion method has been utilized to complete the infusion work and remove the cavities on the FRP surface within the curing time. It is resulting from the arrangement of infusion and vacuum channels, the resin property, and the combination of FRP. This strategy has been depended on the field experience for manufacturing FRP without the resin infusion simulation. This study can help to improve the efficiency of FRP fabrication with the laminating strategy including the resin infusion simulation instead of the field experience.
A practical and convenient method of rearing Eucyclops serrulatus in a microculture environment is described. A complete life cycle of E. serrulatus was maintained in a narrow space on a microscope slide glass on which a cover glass of $22{\times}40mm$ in size was mounted at a height of 0.8mm. The culture medium was constituted by bottled mineral water boiled with grains of Glycine max (soybean). Chilomonas paramecium, a free-living protozoan organism, was provided as live food. Growth of nauplii hatched from eggs to the first stage of copepodite took an average of 7.7 days, and the growth of copepodite 1 to the egg-bearing adult female took an average of 20.1 days in the microculture cell with an average life time of 44.7 days. Continuous passage of cope pods was successfully maintained as long as sufficient medium and food were provided. The microculture method enables an in situ microscopic observation on the growth and developmental process of helminth larvae experimentally infected to copepods as well as of copepod itself. Furthermore, it does not require anesthetization and, therefore, minimize the amount of stress exposed to cope pods during the handling process.
The protoplast formation and intergeneric protoplast fusion between Gliocladium virens and Trichoderma harzianum were attempted to obtain fusants. Protoplast formation was the most effective when the strains were treated with concentration of 5 mg/ml of Novozyme 234 and Cellulase at $25^{\circ}C$ for 3 hours in phosphate buffer, pH 6.5, supplemented with 0.6 M sorbitol as osmotic stabilizer. Auxotrophic mutants of G. virens G88 did not grow in minimal medium and benomyl resistant T. harzianum T95 from wild types, however, was selected by treatment with UV light as genetic marker to isolate fusants. When the intergeneric protoplast fusion between G. virens G88 and T. harzianum T95 was carried out using 30% PEG 4000 containing 10 mM $CaCl_{2}$, and 50 mM glycine (pH 8.5) as fusogenic agent at $25^{\circ}C$ for 10-15 min, the fusion frequency was $0.8{\times}10^{-4}$. Fusants obtained from intergeneric protoplast fusion were spontaneously segregated into va rious strains by continous culture on complete medium. Several intergeneric hybrids were classified into three types: parent-like hybrids, segregants, and recombinants.
