  • This paper addresses the bidding strategies of a pumped-storage hydro plant in an electricity market. Competitive bidding of pumping and generating of a pumped-storage plant is formulated in a game theoretic problem in accordance with the three different ownership of scheduling; Market Operator(MO), generating company(Genco), and combined type of MO and Genco. Optimal conditions for Nash Equilibrium are derived in the form of market prices during the scheduling periods. Simulation results show the different ownership models produce different schedules of pumping and generating, which correspond to the objective of the scheduling owner of a pumped-storage hydro plant.

  • Transmission congestion is one of the Key factors to local market power in competitive electricity markets. Other players' strategy is also considered. This paper presents an alternative methodology in market power under transmission congestion and other players' strategy. The proposed methodology was demonstrated with the Optimal Power Flow(OPF). Case study is fulfilled by GAMS simulation.

  • In the competitive electricity market, various pricing methods are developed and practiced in many countries. Among these pricing methods, marginal loss factor(MLF) can be applied to reflect the marginal cost of network losses. For the calculation of MLF, power flow method has been used. However, it shows some shortcomings such as necessity of regional reference node, and absence of an ability to consider network constraints. The former defect might affect adversely to the equity of market participants and the latter might generate an inappropriate price signal. To overcome these defects, the utilization of optimal power flow(OPF) is suggested in this paper. 30-bus system is used for the case study to compare the MLF by the power flow and the OPF method for 24-hour dispatching and pricing.

  • The eventual goal of this paper is to help the generating companies and load-serving entities to choose appropriate relative levels of interconnected system versus bilateral trades while considering risk, and economic performance. In competitive power markets, electricity prices are determined by balance between demand and supply in electric power exchanges or bilateral contracts. The problem formulation is bilateral contract incorporated into Multi-area unit commitment with import/export and tie-line constraints. This proposed method considers maximizing own profit or minimize the operating cost among the generating companies in multi-area system. The feasibility of the proposed algorithm has been demonstrated using IEEE system with four areas and experimental results shows that proposed method is reliable, fast and computationally efficient

  • The importance and necessity conducting studies on grid reliability evaluation have been increasingly important in recent years due to the number of black-out events occurring through in the world. Quantity evaluation of transmission system reliability is very important in a competitive electricity environment. The reason is that the successful operation of electric power under a deregulated electricity market depends on transmission system reliability management. Also in Korea it takes places. This paper presents the probabilistic reliability evaluation for 765KV transmission lines of KEPCO grid expansion planning. The Transmission Reliability Evaluation for large-Scale Systems (TRElSS) Version 6.2, a software package developed by Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) is utilized in determining the improved probabilistic reliability indices of (KEPCO) system.

The quantity evaluation of transmission system reliability is very important under competitive electricity environment. The reason is that the successful operation of electric power under the deregulated electricity market depends on transmission system reliability management. This paper introduces features and operation modes of the Transmission Reliability Evaluation for Large-Scale Systems(TRELSS) Version 6.2, a program made in EPRI, for assessing reliability indices of composite power system. The package accesses not only bulk but also buses indices for reliability evaluation of composite powers system. The characteristics of the TRELSS program are illustrated by the case studies using the KEPCO system

  • In the past vertically integrated power system, the power utility forecasted power demand and invested new power plants to keep a system adequacy. However, in the competitive electricity markets, a principle part of the capacity investment is market participants who decided the investment to maximize their profit. Especially, one of the main factors in their long-term decision making is the retrieval of fixed costs (construction costs). This paper presents the capacity payment in electricity power markets. The capacity payment (CP) in Cost Based Pool (CBP) is needed to recover fixed costs. However, CP in CBP was applied not only recovering fixed costs but also ensuring supply reliability. In order to operate harmonious power markets, pool needs reasonable CP mechanism. This paper analysis CP using capacity proportion and Reliability Pricing Model (RPM).

  • Intensive competition in the electricity market and demand for higher quality service force the utilities to change their strategies in setting price and quality combination. As cost-up by homogeneously enhancing the electricity service quality may reduce their competitiveness, differential service is to be taken into consideration. Priority Service, which provides customers with a selection of service options at a range of prices and reliability for all or portions of their loads, has drawn attention from utilities in an increasingly competitive environment. Priority Service is to enlarge service options for customers who have diverse needs for supply reliability. This paper in the light of this point reviews differentiated strategy of power quality in the U.S.A.

  • The electric marketplace is in the midst of major changes designed to promote competition. No longer vertically integrated with guaranteed customers and suppliers, electric generators and distributors will have to compete to sell and buy electricity. Unit commitment (UC) in such a competitive environment is not the same as the traditional one anymore. The objective of UC is not to minimize production cost as before but to find the solution that produces a maximum profit for a generation firm. This paper presents a hi-level formulation that decomposes the UC game into a generation-decision game (first level game) and a state(on/off)-decision game (second level game). Derivation that the first-level game has a pure Cournot Nash equilibrium(NE) helps to solve the second-level game. In case of having a mixed NE in the second-level game, this paper chooses a pure strategy having maximum probability in the mixed strategy in order to obviate the probabilistic on/off state which may be infeasible. Simulation results shows that proposed method gives the adequate UC solutions corresponding to a NE.

  • Web system helps high-performance processing for big-data analysis and practical use to make various information using IT resources. The government have started the RPS system in 2012. The system invigorates the electricity production as using renewable energy equipment. The government operates system gathered big-data with various related information system data and the system users are distributed geographically. The companies have to fulfill the system, are available to purchase the REC to other electricity generation company sellers to procure REC for their duty volumes. The REC market operates single auction methods with users a competitive price. But the price have the large variation with various user trading strategy and sellers situations. This papler proposed RPS system modeling and simulation in web environment that is modeled in geographically distributed computing environment for web user with DEVS W/S. Web simulation system base on web service helps to analysis correlation and variables that act on trading price and volume within RPS big-data and the analysis can be forecast REC price.
