An Exploratory Study on the Relationship between Firm Capabilities, Competitive Strategies and Competitive Advantage of Mobile Telecommunication Services (이동통신서비스의 기업능력, 경쟁전략 및 경쟁우위의 영향관계에 관한 탐색적 연구)

  • Recently domestic mobile carriers have been engaged in heated battles for survival as the market is now rapidly approaching its maturity phase. and the launch of 3G service combined with the introduction of mobile number portability is dramatically reshaping the market landscape. The mobile carriers may have to create and maintain their competitive advantage based on their core capabilities and differentiated strategies. which will lead continuous survival and profits of the firm. This paper investigated competitiveness factors among mobile carriers. and analyzed the relationships of firm capabilities. competitive strategies and competitive advantage. We found that core capabilities and competitive strategies affecting competitive advantage are different from each carrier. Finally. we discussed strategic implications for carriers to increase their competitiveness.

The Effect of competitive strategy on Firms' Export Performance : Focusing on the Moderating Effect of Entrepreneurial Orientation (중국 중소기업의 경쟁전략이 수출성과에 미치는 영향 : 기업가 지향성의 조절 효과를 중심으로)

  • For venturing into international markets, small and medium enterprises (SMEs) have not only emphasized internal resources but entrepreneurial orientation has also become the need of the day due to its significant role in increasing firm's competitive capabilities. Although research indicates that the competitive strategies can significantly impact export performance, minor attention is given to the relationship between entrepreneurial orientation, business competitive strategy and export performance of small and medium enterprises (SMEs). This study scrutinizes the effect of each dimension of entrepreneurial orientation (i.e., innovativeness, risk-taking, and proactiveness) and each of generic competitive strategies (i.e., cost leadership and differentiation) on the export performance of Chinese SMEs. And we investigated the moderating effect of entrepreneurial orientation on the relationship between the competitive strategies and export performance. We surveyed 217 Chinese SMEs through a structured questionnaire. For the data analysis and hypotheses testing, we used AMOS. 27. The findings display that differentiation and cost leadership strategies significantly improve export performance. The innovativeness, risk-taking and proactiveness also spur Chinese SME's export performance. Further we find that adding entrepreneurial orientation significantly improves our model of the relationship between the competitive strategies and export performance. Thus, our study extends the entrepreneurial orientation literature and provides interesting new insights into how entrepreneurial orientation helps firms create more successful export operations.

Hospital Marketing Strategies in Competitive Era : Positioning and Patient Satisfaction Strategies (경쟁시대의 병원마케팅전략 : 포지셔닝과 고객만족을 중심으로)

  • The Korean hospital industry is rapidly changing along with the competition among hospitals. Until recently it was easy for hospitals to profit even without efficient management and competitive strategies. However, the increasingly intensive competition endanger their profits but also their survivals. Hospital managers have no choice but to seriously consider competitive management and marketing strategies to remain alive and prosper. This study introduces a useful methodology--perception map drawn using multidimensional scaling--for developing competitive strategies, and illustrates its application to developing a perception map of 9 Seoul-based general hospitals. We also suggest the concepts and examples of positioning strategies and patient satisfaction management system. One of the interesting findings is that the Samsung medical center which opened less than a year ago is ranked first in most aspects such as kindness, facilities, waiting time, and parking, and the second in clinical performance just after the Seoul National University Hospital.

Comparison and Analysis of Competition Strategies in Competitive Coevolutionary Algorithms (경쟁 공진화 알고리듬에서 경쟁전략들의 비교 분석)

  • A competitive coevolutionary algorithm is a probabilistic search method that imitates coevolution process through evolutionary arms race. The algorithm has been used to solve adversarial problems. In the algorithms, the selection of competitors is needed to evaluate the fitness of an individual. The goal of this study is to compare and analyze several competition strategies in terms of solution quality, convergence speed, balance between competitive coevolving species, population diversity, etc. With two types of test-bed problems, game problems and solution-test problems, extensive experiments are carried out. In the game problems, sampling strategies based on fitness have a risk of providing bad solutions due to evolutionary unbalance between species. On the other hand, in the solution-test problems, evolutionary unbalance does not appear in any strategies and the strategies using information about competition results are efficient in solution quality. The experimental results indicate that the tournament competition can progress an evolutionary arms race and then is successful from the viewpoint of evolutionary computation.

  • This paper attempts to provide an overview of relationship between the characteristics of the network and competitive strategies. We review the theoretical background of the efficiency of network, which Is very important for the network-based industries. Network externality, positive feedback effects, bandwagon effects, economies of scale, economies of scope in network-base businesses are reviewed. Various network situations, including interconnection, and strategies are also discussed. In this purpose, simple but meaningful examples and cases are used to show the economic goals and means of network competition strategies. We try to link network strategies to the generic strategies and coopetition suggested by Porter and by Brandenburger and Nalebuff respectively. Since this study is an exploratory research, further studies on more complex network situation in the real work can be executed with taking advantage of this effort.

  • I study a solution concept which preserves the nice Nash equilibrium properties of two-person zero-sum games, and define a locally competitive equilibrium which is characterized by a saddle point with respect to the coordinates of strategies. I show that a locally competitive equilibrium shares the properties of uniqueness of equilibrium payoffs, interchangeablity of equilibrium strategies and convexity of the equilibrium set.

  • Increasing competitive pressure, the constantly accelerating transformation of the economy, and a stronger focus on value creation have initiated the search for sustainable sources of competitive advantage in organizations. In this context, the concept of treating organizational knowledge as a valuable strategic resource has become quite popular recently. Knowledge has become the most critical component in the struggle for sustained competitive advantage and knowledge management (KM) has also been described for its possible role in creating sustainable competitive advantage. In order to examine the contingency between KM resources, KM strategies, and KM performance of organizations, a contingency model of KM, which is based on resource-based theory as well as knowledge-based theory, is developed from the information systems and strategic management literature in order to assess the following questions: (i) What KM resources affect the organization's KM strategies? (ii) Is there a relationship between KM strategies and organizational performance enhanced by KM? A detailed exploratory analysis of survey responses from 79 Korean companies provides the following significant findings: (i) This study found support for the proposed contingency model of KM; (ii) The organization's KM strategies are determined by social resources and its capabilities; (iii) An organization with a culture-based KM strategy is more likely to enhance organizational KM performance than an organization with a technology-based KM strategy.

  • This study explores the ways to upgrade the services of the special libraries and information centers and strengthen their competitiveness. First, this study examines the characteristics of the special libraries and information centers and the competitive environments which they face. And this study considers the possibilities to make use of Knowledge Management(KM) and Competitive Intelligence(CI) in special libraries and information centers in Korea finally, this study provides the management strategies to strengthen the competitiveness of the special libraries and information centers in Korea.

  • Global Electronic Commerce (EC) is currently being pursued by most of the developed countries. Domestically, EC has just started and still has lots of problems to solve in terms of both technology and institutions. EC has a great potential to affect a country's competitive advantage. For EC to be adopted and diffused early, it is necessary to analyze the current status of EC and to establish the strategies to strengthen the competitive position. Therefore, the major objectives of the study are to review the current status of EC in Korea and to propose for both public and private sectors the strategies to strengthen the competitive advantage.

  • Amidst a competitive environment, success and innovation of a company hinge on establishment of competitive strategies through CEO's capabilities for discovering new businesses. In other words, several alternatives that are being considered as new businesses and the ensuing selection that a top management makes lead to a company's success and innovation. Examples of this are numerous among global corporations as well as Korean small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). This research has analyzed the role of a CEO to be a condition for success in the growth and innovation of a company. Starting from the topic of entrepreneurship, the research on the role of a CEO has been actively conducted in context with the latest innovations. A prime example involves research related to the innovativeness of a CEO. In this regard, this research was an empirical analysis on the impact that a CEO's ability to discover new business opportunities and competitive strategies has on the performance of a firm. This analysis was conducted based on nationwide data of 286 large conglomerates and smaller-sized companies alike. Based on the analysis, "experimenting" and "association", among abilities of discovery, have been found to strengthen competitive strategies. Also in the context of abilities needed for discovery, differentiation strategy has a greater effect on a firm's performance than the cost leadership strategy. Furthermore, the mediating effect of competitive strategies was prominently displayed in experimenting and corporate performance.
