An Analysis on the Competitiveness of the Oil Refinery Market in South Korea

  • This study analyzes the degree of competition in the oil refinery market in Korea, which is considered an oligopoly market. The price of gasoline and diesel and the quantity of supply are used to identify the market competition. We also analyze whether the oil tax reduction policy has affected market competition. The competitiveness of the market was examined using monthly data from 2008 to 2019. Bresnahan-Lau method was employed to estimate the degree of competition in the oil refinery market, which is frequently used in the industrial studies. The analysis shows that the gasoline and diesel markets seem close to a perfect competitive market. Also, the tax cut has weakened market competition. In other words, the monopolistic power has increased in the market, so consumers have not benefit from the price cuts as much as tax cuts. Although the oil refinery market where four major companies are competing, the government's monitoring and price disclosure system help the market to be highly competitive as much as a perfect competition market. The tax cut, in the high oil price era, has a negative effect on the competition because of an information asymmetry about the price-setting process between suppliers and consumers.

  • In this paper, an autonomous driving system is implemented for the Segye AI Robot Race Competition that multiple vehicles drive simultaneously. By utilizing the ERP42-racing platform, RTK-GPS, and LiDAR sensors provided in the competition, we propose an autonomous driving system that can drive safely and quickly in a road environment with multiple vehicles. This system consists of a recognition, judgement, and control parts. In the recognition stage, vehicle localization and obstacle detection through waypoint-based LiDAR ROI were performed. In the judgement stage, target velocity setting and obstacle avoidance judgement are determined in consideration of the straight/curved section and the distance between the vehicle and the neighboring vehicle. In the control stage, adaptive cruise longitudinal velocity control based on safe distance and lateral velocity control based on pure-pursuit are performed. To overcome the limited experimental environment, simulation and partial actual experiments were conducted together to develop and verify the proposed algorithms. After that, we participated in the Segye AI Robot Race Competition and performed autonomous driving racing with verified algorithms.

  • Domestic construction industry (including plant engineering industry) faces severe competition with world-wide leading companies under WTO (World Trade Organization) system. To survive in this competition, domestic construction company should establish and operate standardization system efficiently. In this paper, check list is presented to prepare the efficient reliability management system in domestic construction. And then, the check list is applied in MIR(Maturity Index on Reliability) estimation item to estimate reliability management level of company quantitatively.

  • Globalization of higher education deepens the competition in the global educational services market. Competition between higher education institutions is based on the use of a wide range of activities and tools that are constantly evolving and becoming more complex. Digitalization significantly transforms the approaches to competition between universities in educational, research and marketing activities. Digital technologies are becoming an integral part of this competition. In addition, in the current conditions of globalization of the scientific and educational space, numerous rankings of universities have become an important tool of the competition; the most significant rankings of universities are as follows: Academic Ranking of World Universities (China), Times Higher Education Rankings of Universities (Great Britain), Webometrics (Spain). In the article, the key principles of the formation of world rankings of universities are analyzed, the main sources of information resources for their compilation are determined. The authors have concluded that the improvement of the position of educational institutions in the world rankings of universities should be implemented within the framework of the state educational policy. The key positive effects of universities due to increasing the competitiveness level of the national higher education system are specified.

Role of Information Sharing on the Impact of Foreign Banks' Penetration on Banking Competition

  • Globalization has led to an increase in foreign banks' penetration. It is argued that the presence of foreign banks may affect the banking sector of the host countries in several ways including their competition level. It is mentioned that the presence of the foreign banks could heightened the level of competition in the banking sector. Nonetheless, the impact of the foreign banks on competition could be influenced by the degree of information sharing in the banking industry. This study investigates the role of information sharing in moderating the impact of foreign bank penetration on host banking sector competition in selected developing countries. We employ panel data samples of 54 developing countries during the period from 1998 to 2016. The estimation is carried out using the two-step system of the Generalized Method of Moments (GMM) regression technique. This technique is adopted due to its robustness to all forms of endogeneity. The findings of this study show that the presence of information sharing could affect the relationship between foreign banks' penetration and competition. They suggest that improvement in information sharing by a host country may help foreign banks to improve monitoring and reduce the moral hazard and adverse selection problem.

  • Development of hematite-coated sand was evaluated for the application of the PRB (permeable reactive barrier) in the arsenic-contaminated subsurface of the metal mining areas. The removal efficiency of As(III) and As(V), the effect of anion competition and the capability of arsenic removal in the flow system were investigated through the experiments of adsorption isotherm, arsenic removal kinetics against anion competition and column removal. Hematite-coated sand followed a linear adsorption isotherm with high adsorption capacity at low level concentrations of arsenic (< 1.0 mg/l). When As(III) and As(V) underwent adsorption reactions in the presence of anions (sulfate, nitrate and bicarbonate), sulfate caused strong inhibition of arsenic removal, and bicarbonate and nitrate caused weak inhibition due to specific and nonspecific adsorption onto hematite, respectively. In the column experiments, high content of hematite-coated sand enhance the arsenic removal, but the amount of the arsenic removal decreased due to the higher affinity of As(V) than As(III) and reduced adsorption kinetics in the flow system, Therefore, the amount of hematite-coated sand, the adsorption affinity of arsenic species and removal kinetics determined the removal efficiency of arsenic in the flow system. arsenic, hematite-coated sand, permeable reactive barrier, anion competition, adsorption.

  • 미국 NASA는 자국 우주발사시스템 분야 인력양성을 위해 대학생 대상의 로켓 경진대회를 2006년부터 매년 개최하고 있다. 본 논문은 교육 프로젝트 일환으로 미국 젊은이들에게 우주 임무에 필요한 과학, 기술, 공학, 수학(STEM) 분야에 관심을 고취시키기 위한 NASA 주관 대학생 로켓 경진대회인 NASA Student Launch에 대한 의미와 운영 방식에 대한 분석을 한다. 아울러 국내 대학생 로켓 경진대회 활동을 간략히 소개한다.

Implementation of a No Pulse Competition CPS-SPWM Technique Based on the Concentrated Control for Cascaded Multilevel DSTATCOMs

  • Digital signal processor (DSP) and field programmable gate array (FPGA) based concentrated control systems are designed for implementing CPS-SPWM strategies. The self-defined universal asynchronous receiver/transmitter (UART) protocol is used for communication between a master controller and an individual module controller via high speed links. Aimed at undesired pulse competition, this paper analyzes its generation mechanism and presents a new method for eliminating competition pulses with no time delay. Finally, the proposed concentrated controller is applied to a 10kV/10MVar distribution static synchronous compensator (DSTATCOM) industrial prototype. Experimental results show the accuracy and reliability of the concentrated controller, and verify the superiority of the proposed elimination method for competition pulses.

평창지역 천연 활엽수림의 산림작업별 시업전후의 경쟁지수 비교 (Comparison of Competition Indices by Silvicultural Systems Before and After Treatments for Natural Deciduous Forests in Pyeongchang)

  • 본 연구는 강원도 평창군 가리왕산 일대의 천연 활엽수림을 대상으로 택벌림화 작업, 이단림화 작업, 그리고 산벌림화 작업의 3가지 작업방법별 시업 전과 시업 후의 경쟁지수 변화를 평가함으로써 산림생태계 경영에 필요한 정보를 제공하기 위해 수행하였다. 이를 위해 $30m{\times}30m$(0.09 ha) 크기의 고정표본점을 각 작업방법별로 3반복으로 설치하고 시업 전과 시업 후의 정밀 임분조사를 실시하였다. 이와 같이 조사된 자료에 근거하여 Hegyi의 거리종속 경쟁지수를 추정하였으며, 경쟁목의 범위는 중심목의 지표로부터 $50^{\circ}$로 시준된 각도에 의해 경쟁목을 선정하는 방법을 사용하였다. 각 작업방법별 그리고 시업 전후의 임분구조 변화를 평가하기 위해 Duncan의 다중검정과 t-검정을 실시하였다. 작업방법별 시업전후의 경쟁지수를 분석한 결과 작업방법에 관계없이 시업을 통해 임분구조가 개선된 것으로 평가되었다. 또한 시업 전과 시업 후의 경쟁지수는 통계적인 차이를 보여 각 작업방법별 임분의 공간 구조는 시업을 통해 개선된 것을 확인할 수 있었다.

Determination of the Optimal Access Charge for the Mobile Virtual Network Operator System

  • The introduction of a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) system is expected to increase consumer benefits, boost competition in the mobile market, utilize idle bandwidth, and expedite mobile-fixed line convergence and growth in the mobile Internet market. This research endeavors to study the optimal access charge for an MVNO system, which is expected to be introduced to the Korean mobile communications market. We found that the optimal access charge is higher in the interdependent model than in the independent model if demand for mobile phone service is based on a substitution relationship. We also found that the optimal access charge is higher than the marginal cost.
