  • Purpose: This thesis focuses on researching the burden of the Home Health Care that the Family Care-givers have. Method: This study had been conducted for the duration of 3 consecutive months from January 2006 to March 2006 and had investigated 120 person registered as the Home Health Care Clients to a University Hospital located in Incheon City. The thesis adopted the 'feeling of burden' measuring method jointly developed by Seo, Mi-Hye and Oh, Ga-Sil(1993), and FACES-III(Family Adaptability Cohesion Evaluation) developed by Olson(1985) etc. translated by Kim, Yun-Hee(1989) as the measuring method for Family Function. Result: The overall Health Status of the Home Health Care Clients was 2.18 point of average out of 3 point, where as 1.83 for Activities of Daily living and 1.98 for Vital sign, which are below the average. In the mean time, the Competence for Modified Barthel Index marked 30.88 point out of the full mark. The analyzed result of the burden that the family members have was 3.43 point of average out of 5 point which shows that the interviewee feel that they are considerable burden to their families. When it comes to 'the Burden to the family members' and 'the Function of the family' according to the characteristics of the patient, the result shows statistically significant differences, which are varied according to gender, the relationship between the care-givers and the patients. When it comes to the Family Cohesion, the difference was examined as 'statistically significant' according to the Academic background of the patients and the relationship between the patients and the interviewee.(p<0.05). The result also suggests that there exists 'Negative correlation' among the level of patients' health status, the Family Cohesion and the Family Burden. Conclusion: From the result of this study stated above, this thesis is strongly insisting that there is an urgent need for us to develop a health care mediation program, which could eventually reduce the burden of home health care that the patients' family have. At the same time, a follow-up research to prove the effect of the program is imminent.

  • The technique of SCNT is now well established but still remains inefficient. The in vitro development of SCNT embryos is dependent upon numerous factors including the recipient cytoplast and karyoplast. Above all, the metaphase of the second meiotic division (MII) oocytes have typically become the recipient of choice. Generally high level of MPF present in MII oocytes induces the transferred nucleus to enter mitotic division precociously and causes NEBD and PCC, which may be the critical role for nuclear reprogramming. In the present study we investigated the in vitro development and pregnancy of White-Hanwoo SCNT embryos treated with caffeine (a protein kinase phosphatase inhibitor). As results, the treatment of 10 mM caffeine for 6 h significantly increased MPF activity in bovine oocytes but does not affect the developmental competence to the blastocyst stage in bovine SCNT embryos. However, a significant increase in the mean cell number of blastocysts and the frequency of pregnant on 150 days of White-Hanwoo SCNT embryos produced using caffeine treated cytoplasts was observed. These results indicated that the recipient cytoplast treated with caffeine for a short period prior to reconstruction of SCNT embryos is able to increase the frequency of pregnancy in cow.

  • Somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT) has generally demonstrated that a differentiated cell can convert into a undifferentiated or pluripotent state. In the SCNT experiment, nuclear reprogramming is induced by exposure of introduced donor nuclei to the recipient cytoplasm of matured oocytes. However, because the efficiency of SCNT still remains low, a combination of SCNT technique with the ex-ovo method may improve the normal development of SCNT embryos. Here we hypothesized that treatment of somatic cells with extracts prepared from the germinal vesicle (GV) stage Siberian sturgeon oocytes prior to their use as nuclear donor for SCNT would improve in vitro development. A reversible permeability protocol with $4{\mu}g/mL$ of digitonin for 2 min at $4^{\circ}C$ in order to deliver Siberian sturgeon oocyte extract (SOE) to porcine fetal fibroblasts (PFFs) was carried out. As results, the intensity of H3K9ac staining in PFFs following treatment of SOE for 7 h at $18^{\circ}C$ was significantly increased but the intensity of H3K9me3 staining in PFFs was significantly decreased as compared with the control (p<0.05). Additionally, the level of histone acetylation in SCNT embryos at the zygote stage was significantly increased when reconstructed using SOE-treated cells (p<0.05), similar to that of IVF embryos at the zygote stage. The number of apoptotic cells was significantly decreased and pluripotency markers (Nanog, Oct4 and Sox2) were highly expressed in the blastocyst stage of SCNT embryos reconstructed using SOE-treated cells as nuclear donor (p<0.05). And there was observed a better development to the blastocyst stage in the SOE-treated group (p<0.05). Our results suggested that pre-treatment of cells with SOE could improve epigenetic reprogramming and the quality of porcine SCNT embryos.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate how a teaching approach influences student's ability of classification at the brain level. Twenty four healthy and right-handed college students participated in this study, which investigated a brain plasticity associated with category-generation and -understanding in classification learning. The participants were divided into one of two groups, one each for category-generation and -understanding learning programs, which were composed of twelve topics taught over a twelve-week period. To measure the change in student competence and brain activations, a paper and pencil test and an fMRI scanning session were administered before and after the training programs. Unlike the understanding group, the generation group showed significant changes in classification ability quotients and learning-related brain activations (cerebral cortex and basal ganglia were increased and prefrontal cortex and parahippocampal gyrus were decreased). Nevertheless, the understanding group showed an increased activation in the cerebral cortex and parahippocampal gyrus and a decreased activation in the right prefrontal cortex and cerebellum. Therefore, it can be concluded that teaching styles could influence students' brain activation patterns and classification ability. The results might also be used to develop a brain-compatible science education curriculum.

  • This study investigated pre-service elementary teachers' understanding of the basic concepts of and their attitudes toward astronomy in Korea and Japan. The survey instrument called the Astronomy Diagnostic lest (ADT) that was developed by the Collaboration for Astronomy Education Research (CAER) in 1998 was used and modified to tailor to the two countries' contexts, including 12 items written in the two languages, Korean and Japanese. The attitudes toward astronomy were examined by the Survey of Attitudes toward Astronomy (SATA), which was developed by Zeilik et al. in 1999. Cronbach's alpha of this sample of the study was 0.69, while the reliability of SATA was 0.87. All the pre-service elementary teachers in both Korea and Japan showed a low-level understanding of the basic concepts of astronomy. 38% of Korean pre-service elementary teachers had correct answers to the questions regarding the basic conceptions of astronomy, while 37% of Japanese participants had correct answers to them. Although there was no statistically significant difference between Korean and Japanese pre-service elementary teachers, Korean teachers scored higher than Japanese participants in SATA. A significant difference, however, was revealed in the categories of cognitive competence and value of the attitudes toward astronomy (p <.05). In addition, it was found that both Korean and Japanese pre-service elementary teachers scored less than 40% about the basic concepts of astronomy and that they obtained lower scores than the US college students with regard to the attitudes toward astronomy.

  • Previous research has recently shown that non-cognitive factors such as attitudes toward statistics contribute positively to statistics learning, Hence, helping students develop positive attitudes toward statistics has become one of the essential goals of statistics teaching. A wide variety of instruments assessing attitudes toward statistics were developed and validated in foreign countries, but not many in Korea. The SATS-36(Survey of Attitudes Toward Statistics-36; Schau et al., 1995) has been regarded as one of the most valid measures of attitudes toward statistics. Therefore, this study was designed to validate a Korean version of Survey of Attitudes Toward Statistics(K-SATS). Instead of six factors of the original scale, a five-factor structure including interests, value, cognitive competence, difficulty, and effort was empirically supported by the Korean student sample. The results evidenced high reliability and construct validity of K-SATS. In addition, students' attitudes towards statistics differed across gender, level of statistics courses, degree programs, and major. These findings were discussed in terms of their implications for future research and statistics teaching.
