  • An experiment was conducted to investigate the performance and production cost of Pekin ducklings fed varying levels of dietary protein. One hundred and twenty ducklings in four separate groups received either 16, 18, 20 or 22% CP in the starter period (day-old to 3rd week of age). These four groups ate either 12, 14, 16 or 18% CP respectively during the grower-finisher period (4th week to 12th week of age). The results of the study indicated that in a tropical country like Bangladesh, the protein needs of Pekin ducklings should be satisfied depending on the age at which the birds are to be marketed. If the ducklings are to be marketed at 6 weeks, 22/18% CP would be sufficient. When the marketing is aimed at 9 weeks of age, 20/16% would be adequate. For ducklings which are to be marketed at 12 weeks of age, a protein level of 18/14% would be required. All these results should help the producers to keep production cost to a minimum. The exceptional capacity of ducklings for compensatory growth would help keep birds on low protein levels if they are reared upto 9 or 12 weeks before marketing.

  • Dyke-Davidoff-Masson Syndrome (DDMS) is a rare condition characterized by asymmetry of cerebral hemispheric growth with atrophy on one side, ipsilateral compensatory osseous hypertrophy, and contralateral hemiparesis. We experienced a 17 month-old male who presented with left focal clonic or tonic-clonic seizures accompanied by left hemiparesis and developmental delay. Brain MRIs demonstrated progressive atrophy of the right cerebral hemisphere with dilatation of the lateral ventricle, expansion of the ipsilateral frontal sinus with calvarial thickening, and elevation of the petrous pyramid and orbital roof. Brain SPECT showed a decreased volume of the right hemisphere with reduced blood flow. We therefore report a case of DDMS with a review of the literature.

  • To make a critical revision on the inherited social problems throughout the time in Mexico, not always turns out to be easy task, especially when the subject is lent to approach it from diverse perspective, one of them, the educative one. To analyze the low quality of the educative supply is complex subject. One of the maximum profits of institutional revolutionary Mexico was the creation of the Public Education Ministry in 1921. In the post-revolutionary and modern period, the seventies were characterized to be applied to the growth the infrastructure and the fortification of the educative system following the policy of "modernization and development". From the eighties, to lift the quality of the education was considered like one of the specific rules in the strategy of the call "educative revolution". In the nineties, through political programs and agreements, structural changes within the educative system were carried out with the intention to lift the quality of the services. In synthesis, the perspective in the educative policy of Mexico during the last thirty years of century xx, or post-revolutionary period, can be understood, from at least five specific conditions: educative profits in cover, modifications in the educational programs and contents, profits in the political agreements between the agents who take part within the educative system, changes and modifications to the laws applicable to the education, and; the search of the fairness through the compensatory programs. This paper tries to give answer to questions such as: The educative system reflects the ideals of the revolution? The present educative system is the product of a truncated revolution or the fruit of an untimely democracy?

  • This study was aimed to clarify the histopathological changes in the experimental animal model subjcted to rigid fixation performed across the frontonasal sutrue in growing rabbits. Sixteen rabbits aged 6 weeks used. In experimental group(n=12), rigid fixation with miniplates and screws was performed across the frontonasal suture. Control group(n=4) was those with periosteal elevation only. Experimental animals were sacrificed on the 2nd, 4th, 8th, and 12th week after operation, and frontonasal suture area was excised for light microscopic and scanning electron microscopic examination. The results obtained were as follows : 1. In control groups, collagen fiber bundles ran in the midportion of bone sutrue and cambial layers were seen at bone surface. Sutural surfaces are beveled and external and internal bony projected portions were observed. 2. In experimental groups, distance of bone suture was decreased by new bone formation on the 2nd week, while increased by bone resorption at the miniplate applied area and bone formation in the adjacent bone on the 4th week. 3. In experimental groups, the original bone surface was almost resorbed and new bone formation was found on the 8th week. Regulary-run collagen fibers, smooth and dense bone surfaces were similar to the bone patterns of control groups on the 12th week. Above results suggest that bone formation is restricted where the miniplate is applied, while compensatory growth is appeared in the adjacent bont. It is considered that rigid fixation with miniplates and acrews results in a little disturbance of sutural growth of the craniofacial bone in infancy and children when applied for short duration.

  • The effects of barley and oat feeding in table duck were investigated. During a 49-day growing period a corn-based diet was supplemented by 45% barley and 45% oats (isonitrogenously and iso-energetically), respectively. Daily feed intake, FCR-, and weight gain were measured. Abdominal fat, liver, and gizzard weights were determined and dry matter, protein, fat content and fatty acid composition of femoro-tibial muscles and liver fat were measured on the $35^{th}$, $42^{nd}$ and $49^{th}$ days of age. Feeding 45% barley caused a decrease of growth rate ($p{\leq}0.05$) during the first 4 weeks, which was followed by a rapid, compensatory growth from the $6^{th}$ week of age ($p{\leq}0.05$). Both barley and oat supplementation increased protein ($p{\leq}0.05$), while decreasing fat ($p{\leq}0.05$) and dry matter ($p{\leq}0.05$) content of the liver. Feeding of 45% oats in the diet decreased the monounsaturated fatty acid ($p{\leq}0,05$) and increased the n-6 ($p{\leq}0,05$), n-3 ($p{\leq}0,05$) and total polyunsaturated ($p{\leq}0,05$) fatty acid content of the intramuscular fat owing to the high proportion of soluble non-starch polysaccharides (NSP) in the diet. This might be explained by the more pronounced decrease in digestibility of saturated than unsaturated fatty acids in birds fed a soluble NSP-enriched diet. This result might be caused by the "cage effect" of soluble NSP trapping the bile salts which are more important for the absorption of saturated than polyunsaturated fatty acids.

  • There are varieties of severe malocclusions, which can be treated orthodontically, but with a great deal of effort. Anterior openbite, in particular, is one malocclusion thought to be more difficult to treat, and therefore, most of them have to be corrected by means of surgical intervention. To solve these problems, numerous studies pertinent to treatment modalities have been introduced with controversies on the effectiveness of treatment. Suggested treatment modalities for anterior openbite are based directly or indirectly on the neuromuscular and morphological features and on the etiologic and/or the environmental factors. Even though the vertical relationship of the face is increased due to the growth variation, the normal occlusal relationship can be achieved by the adequate dentoalveolar compensatory mechanism, but in the case of inadequate or negative dentoalveolar compensation, openbite is likely to be present. If the skeletal dysplasia is too severe to be solved by orthodontic treatment alone, combined treatment with surgery should be done to restore the function and the esthetics of the orofacial complex. In many cases, however, orthodontic alteration of the dentition pertinent to the given skeletal pattern with the proper diagnosis and treatment planning can bring satisfactory results. The treatment changes with the Multiloop Edgewise Archwire(MEAW) therapy occurred mainly in the dentoalveolar region and showed a considerable similarity to the natural dentoalveolar compensatory mechanism. In other words, the MEAW technique allows orthodontists to produce the natural dentoalveolar compensation orthodontically. Even if an openbite is corrected by the orthodontic dentoalveolar compensation suitable for the skeletal pattern, relapse may still occur by the persisting etiologic factors which originally prohibited the natural dentoalveolar compensation. The etiologic factors should be determined at the time of initial diagnosis and should be controlled during treatment and retention.

  • Experimental hyperoxia represents a suitable in vitro model to study some pathogenic mechanisms related to oxidative stress. Moreover, it allows the investigation of the molecular pathophysiology underlying oxygen therapy and toxicity. In this study, a modified experimental set up was adopted to accomplish a model of moderate hyperoxia (50% $O_2$, 96 h culture) to induce oxidative stress in the human leukemia cell line, U-937. Spectrophotometric measurements of mitochondrial respiratory enzyme activities, NMR spectroscopy of culture media, determination of antioxidant enzyme activities, and cell proliferation and differentiation assays were performed. The data showed that moderate hyperoxia in this myeloid cell line causes: i) intriguing alterations in the mitochondrial activities at the levels of succinate dehydrogenase and succinate-cytochrome c reductase; ii) induction of metabolic compensatory adaptations, with significant shift to glycolysis; iii) induction of different antioxidant enzyme activities; iv) significant cell growth inhibition and v) no significant apoptosis. This work will permit better characterization the mitochondrial damage induced by hyperoxia. In particular, the data showed a large increase in the succinate cytochrome c reductase activity, which could be a fundamental pathogenic mechanism at the basis of oxygen toxicity.

  • This study was conducted to develop economic injury level (EIL) of onion thrips, Thrips tabaci, on welsh onion (Allium fistulosum L. var) in the early transplanting stage. The changes of welsh onion biomass, yield loss, and T. tabaci density were investigated according to the inoculation periods of T. tabaci. In the early transplanting stage of welsh onion, the yield loss (%) increased with increasing inoculation periods: 17.0, 53.3, 38.4, and 80.8% yield loss in 5, 10, 15, and 20 d inoculation periods, respectively. The relationship between Cumulative Insect Days (CID) of T. tabaci and yield loss (%) of welsh onion was well described by a nonlinear logistic equation. Using the estimated equation, EIL of T. tabaci on welsh onion was estimated to 30 CID per plant based on the yield loss 12% (an empirical gain threshold 5% + marketable rate 93% of welsh onion). ET was calculated to 24 CID, which corresponds to 80% of EIL. Until a more defined EIL-model is developed, the present results should be useful for T. tabaci management in early growth stage of welsh onion. The effect of T. tabaci attack on the yield of welsh onion in late growing season (120 days after transplanting) was also examined. The yield of welsh onion increased at a low population density of T. tabaci and decreased at higher densities, showing a typical over-compensatory response.

  • This experiment was conducted to study the effect of early-life feed restriction with diet dilution on compensatory growth, feed efficiency and abdominal fat pad deposition in broilers. In this study, the chicks were randomly assigned to five treatments. Twenty chicks were assigned to each floor pen, and each dietary treatment was replicated with three pens. Birds In control group (C) were full-fed a starter diet throughout the experimental period, and all birds in four dietary treatments (T1-T4) were fed as starter diet diluted with 50% rice hulls. Birds in T1 were fed with a diluted starter diet ad libitum from 7- to 74-d. In T2,the feeding program was 1-d withdrawal alternating with 3-d feed and in T3 1-d withdrawal alternating with 2-d feed. The feeding Program in T4 was alternate days withdrawal and feeding. The feeding with the diluted starter diet (T1) did not significantly affect to growth rate as compared to the birds of C. When periods of 24 h feed withdrawal were Imposed in conjunction with the diluted diets, birds were under weight at 49 d. As the diluted diet treatment was combined with feed withdrawal (T2-T4), there were further less growth. During the 22 to 49 d Period,T1 birds had greater weight gain compared to other treatments (P<0.05) . Birds consumed less feed from 7- to 49-d when the rice hull dilution was used, and this effect was increased by imposition of feed withdrawal (P<0.07) . If rice hull was excluded from the calculation of feed intake (assumed indigestible) then Intake of the starter diet was markedly less for restricted vs. control birds. After 22 d and from 7 to 49 d, restricted birds had superior feed conversion (P<0.05) compared to control birds. Abdominal fat pad deposition and mortality were not influenced by early feed restriction by diluted diet (P<0.05) .

  • In Nam-myeon coastal area of southern sea, Korea, the following hydrobiological conditions prevailed during 1997: water temperature: 12.6 ~24.5 $^{\circ}C$ ; Salinity: 27.32 ~33.$10 \textperthousand$, Dissolved oxygen: 7.05 $ml/L$ and Chlorophyll a: 1.69 ~ 7.40 $\mu $/L. Phytoplankton, dominated by Ceratium sp, peaked during June-July. Mean growth rates of the bay scallop of selected and non-selected groups cultured for 185 days in this area from July to December, 1997 were 0.17 and 0.19 mm/day for shell height, and 0.17 and 0.16 g/day for total weight, respectively. Maximum predicted values of shell height, calculated by von Bertalanffy growth model, were 54.98 mm for the selected and 52.62 mm for the non-selected groups. Survival of the selected and non-selected groups was 80.0 and 87.0%, respectively.
