  • A dynamic compartment model was required for the prediction of radiological consequences of the tritiated vapor released from the nuclear facility after an accident. A computer code, ECOREA-T, was developed by incorporating the unit models for the evaluation of tritium behavior in the environment. Dry deposition of tritiated vapor from the atmosphere to the soil was calculated using a deposition velocity. Transport of tritium from the atmosphere to the plant was calculated using a specific activity model, and the result was compared with the Belot's analytic solution. Root uptake of tritiated water from the soil and formation of OBT from T were considered in the model. The ECOREA-T code was verified by comparing the results from the other computer codes using a scenario developed through BIOMOVS II study. The results showed good agreements.

  • The present study has been conducted to investigate the validity of the computational fire model and the results predicted by BRANZFIRE zone model and FDS field model are compared with a real scale fire test with spray fire in a multi-compartment. The liquid spray fires fueled with toluene and methanol are used as the fire source and the quantitative measurement of heat release rate is performed in an isolated ISO-9705 compartment with a standard door opening. The temperature field predicted by FDS model showed good agreement with the measurement in the fire room and the corridor, and BRANZFIRE model also gave acceptable result in spite of its simplicity and roughness. The mean temperature predicted by FDS model corresponds with measurement within maximum discrepancy range of 25% and the overall mean value of FDS model matched well with experimental data less than 10%. This study can contribute to establish the limitation and application scope of computational fire model and provide reference data for applying to reliable fire risk assessment.

  • Acoustic modal property of the vehicle passenger compartment is a very important factor which dominates vehicle interior noise in the low frequency range. In most real cars, trunk noise often transfers into the passenger compartment since the two cavities are acoustically coupled. This study identifies the major coupling path by examining the variation of the coupled acoustic modal frequencies and modes. An 1/2 size acryl compartment model is designed and manufactured for the measurement and analysis of coupled acoustic modes. Experimental result shows that package tray contributes to the coupling much more than the back seat and hole size of the package tray is an important design factor to control low frequency acoustic modes in the coupled system.

  • The improvement of climatic comfort is crucial not only for passenger comfort but also for driving safety. Therefore, a better understanding on the flow characteristics of ventilation flow inside the passenger compartment is essential. Most of the previous studies investigated the ventilation flow using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) calculations or scale-down water-model experiments. In this study, the ventilation flow inside the passenger compartment of a real commercial automobile was investigated using a Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) velocity field measurement technique. Under real operating conditions, the velocity fields were measured at several vertical planes for several ventilation modes. The experimental data obtained from this study can be used to understand the detailed flow characteristics in the passenger compartment of a real car and to validate numerical predictions.

  • In the previous study, car interior noise was analyzed using structural acoustic mode coupling coefficients and noise response in vehicle compartment model was simulated by the developed special purpose program. As a continued study, this paper presents a practical scheme for the interior noise reduction of a passenger car. Noisy panels on the vehicle compartment wall could be easily identified by the analysis using mode coupling coefficients. Numerical simulation for noise reduction was carried out on a simplified vehicle compartment model by using panel contribution factor and the noise reduction effect was verified by the structural modification test using Steel Skin (damping sheet).

  • Compartment fire tests were performed using kerosene and Jet A-1 as fire sources to evaluate the relationship between flame temperature and opening size. The tests were performed for a fire caused by the release of kerosene owing to vehicle impact, and for a fire caused by the release of Jet-A-1 owing to airplane collision. The compartment fire tests were performed using a 1/3-scale model of a metal storage cask when the flame temperature was deemed to be the highest. We found the combustion time of Jet-A-1 to be shorter than that of kerosene, and consequently, the flame temperature of Jet-A-1 was measured to be higher than that of kerosene. When the opening was installed on the compartment roof, even though the area of the opening was small, the ventilation factor was large, resulting in a high flame temperature and long combustion. Therefore, the position of the opening is a crucial factor that affects the flame temperature. When the metal storage cask was stored in the compartment, the flame temperature decreased proportionally with the energy that the metal storage cask received from the flame.

  • In order to reasonably predict damage extents of naval ships under in-compartment explosion (INCEX) loads, two conditions should be fulfilled in terms of accurate INCEX load generation and fracture estimation. This paper seeks to predict damage extents of various naval ships by applying the CONWEP model to generate INCEX loads, combined with the Hosford-Coulomb (HC) and localized necking (LN) fracture model. This study selected a naval ship with a 2,000-ton displacement, using associated specifications collected from references. The CONWEP model that is embedded in a commercial finite element analysis software ABAQUS/Explicit was used for INCEX load generation. The combined HC-LN model was used to simulate fracture initiation and propagation. The permanent failures with some structural fractures occurred where at the locations closest to the explosion source points in case of the near field explosions, while, some significant fractures were observed in way of the interfaces between bulkheads and curtain plates under far field explosion. A large thickness difference would lead to those interface failures. It is expected that the findings of this study enhances the vulnerability design of naval ships, enabling more accurate predictions of damage extents under INCEX loads.

  • The TCMI(Three-Compartment Model for iodine) computer code has been developed, which is based on the three-compartment model and the respiratory model recommended in ICRP publication 54. This code is able to evaluate the thyroid burden, dose equivalent, committed dose equivalent and urinary excretion rate as time-dependent functions from the input data: working time and the radioiodine concentration in air. Using the TCMI code, the time-dependent thyroid burdens, the thyroid doses and the urinary excretion rates were calculated for three specific exposure patterns : acute, chronic and periodic. Applicability as an internal dose evaluation method has been assessed by comparing the results with some operational experiences. Simple equations and tables are provided to be used in the evaluation of the thyroid burden and the resulting doses for given I-131 concentration in air and the working time.

  • A general description of sprinkler activation time in compartment-fire-generated smoke layers is made. For calculation of the time hot layer temperature is obtained from two-layer zonal model and time constant of sprinkler is measured. Upper-layer thickness at the instant of sprinkler activation is also presented with changes of opening area. The outputs of the present study provide inputs for the interaction modeling of sprinkler spray and compartment fire environment, which simulates fire suppression phenomena.

  • The present work reports on a numerical simulation of a compartment fire. The fire was modeled using a simplified approach, where combustion is simulated as a volumetric heat release. Computations were performed with the commercial code CFX 5.6. Radiation was modeled with a differential approximation (P1 model), while turbulence effects upon the mean gas flow were dealt with a SST turbulence model. Simulations were carried out using a transient approach, starting at the onset of ignition. Results are provided for the temperature field time evolution, thus allowing a direct comparison with the analytical and experimental data. The high spatial resolution available for the results proved to be of great utility for a more detailed analysis of the thermal impact on the steel structure.
