  • The Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS) has been applied to simulate a full-scale pool fire in well-confined and mechanically ventilated multi-compartments representative of nuclear power plant. The predictive performance of FDS was evaluated through a comparison of the numerical data with experimental data obtained by the OECD/NEA PRISME project. To identify clearly the FDS results regarding to the user-dependence in the process of FDS implementation except for the intrinsic limitation of FDS such as simple combustion model, only the over-ventilated fire condition was chosen. In particular, the importance of accurate boundary conditions (B.C.) in mechanically ventilated system were discussed in details. It was known from FDS results that the B.C. on inlet and outlet vents did significantly affect the thermal and chemical characteristics inside the compartments. Finally, it was confirmed that the FDS imposed an accurate ventilation B.C. provided qualitatively good agreement with temperatures, heat fluxes and concentrations measured inside the nuclear-type multi-compartments.

  • The pharmacokinetics of erythromycin (EM) after oral administration was studied in the cultured olive flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus, using LC/MS/MS. After single- or multiple-dose administration of EM (50, 100, 200 mg/kg body weight and 50 mg/kg for 5 days) by oral route in olive flounder ($350{\pm}40g$, $22{\pm}0.5^{\circ}C$), the concentration in the serum was determined at 1, 3, 6, 9, 24, 72, 120, 168, 264, 360, 504 and 720 h post-dose. The kinetic profile of absorption, distribution and elimination of EM in serum were analyzed fitting to a two-compartment model by WinNonlin program. The area under the concentration-time curve (AUC), maximum concentration ($C_{max}$), time for maximum concentration ($T_{max}$) following oral administration of 50, 100 and 200 mg/kg b.w. and 50 mg for 5 days. EM was $165.3hr^*{\mu}g/m{\ell}$ ($C_{max}$, $34.63{\mu}g/m{\ell}$; $T_{max}$, 1.56 hr), $212.8hr^*{\mu}g/m{\ell}$ ($C_{max}$, $60.38{\mu}g/m{\ell}$; $T_{max}$, 3.99 hr), and $592.37hr^*{\mu}g/m{\ell}$ ($C_{max}$, $63.01{\mu}g/m{\ell}$; $T_{max}$, 4 hr), respectively. The results of this study related to dosage and ${\mu}{\cdot}$withdrawal times could be used for prescription of EM in field for the treatment of bacterial diseases in olive flounder.

  • Among many factors to be considered for higher safety level requirements, the hull stability in intact and damaged conditions in seaways is of utmost importance. Since the assessment of a damaged ship is complicated due to the highly non-linear behavior, it is widely acknowledged that computational fluid dynamics (CFD) methods are one of the most feasible approaches. Although many research activities are being reported on the damaged ship stability recently, most of them are not designed for validation of CFD studies. In this study, well-designed model tests were performed to build a CFD validation database, which is essential in developing better CFD methods for the damage stability assessment. The geometry of the damaged compartment and test conditions were determined based on preliminary CFD simulations. Free roll decay tests in calm water with both intact and damaged ships were performed and the roll motion characteristics were compared. The damaged ship showed a larger roll damping coefficient and more rapid decrease of roll amplitude than the intact ship. The primary reason of these efforts can be explained by the movement of the flooded water.

  • Nuclides in radioactive wastes are assumed to be transported in the geosphere by groundwater and probably discharged into the biosphere. Quantitative evaluation of doses to human beings due to nuclide transport in the geosphere and through the various pathways in the biosphere is the final step of safety assessment of the radioactive waste repository. To calculate the flux to dose conversion factors (DCFs) for nuclides appearing at GBIs with their decay chains, a template ACBIO which is an AMBER case file based on mathematical model for the mass transfer coefficients between the compartments has been developed considering material balance among the compartments in biosphere and then implementing to AMBER, a general and flexible software tool that allows to build dynamic compartment models. An illustrative calculation with ACBIO is shown.

  • Temperature-dependent pharmacokinetics of ciprofloxacin (CIP) was studied in the cultured olive flounders, Paralichthys olivaceus, and black rockfish, Sebastes schlegeli using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) originally developed for quinolone determination from livestock. Pharmacokinetics of CIP was apparently affected by ambient water temperature. In a two-compartment model for flounders after oral dosage of 20 mg/kg, $K_{01},\;at\;13^{\circ}C$ and $23^{\circ}C$ were 4.18 and 1.20/hr, respectively. The $K_{10},\;T_{max}\;and\;C_{max}\;at\;13^{\circ}C$ were 5.574/hr, l4.37${\mu}g/mL\;and\;3.15{\mu}g/mL,$ respectively. The corresponding values at $23^{\circ}C$ were l2.84/hr, 15.39${\mu}g/mL\;and\;6.38{\mu}g/mL$, respectively. The AUC, $T_{1/2} (\alpha)\;and\;T_{1/2}\;(\beta)$ were 278.23 ${\mu}g \cdot hr/mL$, 0.24hr and 47.02hr at $13^{\circ}C$ and 3l7.8l${\mu}g \cdot hr/mL$, 0.30 hrs and 60.78hrs at $23^{\circ}C$ for the flounder, respectively. Similar CIP pharmacokinetics were revealed in the black rockfish after oral dosage of 20 mg/kg under the two water temperature regimes. These pharmacokinetical results have some implication in the optimal usage of recently introduced antibacterials in the farmed fish, which were primarily adapted for poultry and mammalian species.

  • Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT) has the advantage of selectively removing cancer cells ingesting boron compounds. In this study, the benefits for treatment time and boron compound injection dose were compared between current neutron sources and a high current neutron sources to be developed in near future. The time-activity curve (TAC) of GBM (Glioblastoma) for one bolus injection was obtained by applying modified 3 compartment model. The treatment time was determined for an accelerator-based neutron sources at the present time and a high current accelerator based neutron source to be developed in the near future. In the case of the double amount of IAEA-recommended neutron flux, the treatment time was shortened to 15 minutes. In the case of high current accelerators, which are five times the amount of IAEA-recommended neutron flux, the irradiation time is within 5 minutes. The use of a high current accelerator based neutron source in BNCT is advantageous in terms of treatment time. In addition, it can increase the efficiency of use of neutrons and reduce the boron compound injection dose to patients, thus reducing pharmacological toxicity.

  • It is requested that the interior compartment of a passenger vehicle must be satisfied with the FMVSS201U regulation, FMH impact test. It is needed the design methodology to find the appropriate structure about the FMH impact. When designing the impact-absorbing structure for the FMH impact test, it is to be noted that the impact absorber must have different performance considering the stiffness of the vehicle as the impact position and approach angle of FMH. In this study, an efficient design methodology was developed by using subcomponent collapse simulation instead of conducting full-vehicle simulation, thereby reducing the time and resources spent. Further, this unit-model simulation helps optimize the impact absorbing structure.

  • An intravenous pharmacokinetics for a new red cell substitute, PEG-hemoglobin SB1, was studied in SD rats. Total-hemoglobin and its metabolite methemoglobin in the plasma were determined using a spectrophotometer. The limit of quantitation was 0.01g/dL and the C.V for interday assay reproducibility was less than 6%. Upon intravenous administration of anticipated clinical dose, 10 ml(0.7 gHb)/kg, plasma concentration curve of total-hemoglobin was well described by one-compartment model. The $t_{\frac{1}{2}},{\;}CL_{t}$, Vd and $AUC^{0-48hr}$ were $8.23{\pm}0.96{\;}hr,{\;}0.06{\;}{\pm}{\;}0.01 {\;}dL/hr/kg,{\;}0.66{\pm}0.05{\;}dL/lg{\;}and{\;}13.6{\;}{\pm}{\;}1.01g{\cdot}hr/dL$, respectively, in male rats(n=5, $mean{\;}{\pm}{\;}SD$). Those parameters in female rats were $9.21{\;}\pm{\;}2.31{\;}hr,{\;}0.06{\;}{\pm}{\;}0.01{\;}dL/hr/kg,{\;}0.79{\pm}{\;}0.08{\;}dL/kg{\;}and{\;}13.0{\;}{\pm}{\;}2.36{\;}g{\cdot}hr/dL$, respectively. Similar kinetic profiles between males and females were also obtained from other parameters. Small amount of methemoglobin, an oxidative metabolite of SB1, was detected in the plasma of both sexes, where the $AUC^{0-48{\;}hr,m}$ and $t_{{\frac{1}{2}},m}$ were approximately $1.5{\;}g{\cdot}hr/dL$ and 20 hr, respectively. The present work provides a critical kinetic data for the effective clinical applications of PEG-hemoglobin SB1.

  • The present study investigated the effect of fire suppression using a mid-low pressure water mist in a carriage fire. The fire extinguishing time and temperature distributions below ceiling in the enclosed compartment of $2.9m{\times}2.8m{\times}5.0m$ were measured by stopwatch and k-type thermocouples for various fire positions. The numerical simulations were extensively performed using. Fire Dynamics Simulator(FDS, Ver. 4.0) code and the predictions were compared with experimental data. The prediction results showed good agreement with the measured maximum temperature in the all cases. Whereas the predicted temperature was about $40^{\circ}C$ higher than the measured one after operating of water mist. The predicted fire extinguishing times were compared with those of measured data. Fires are extinguished within 200 seconds at the experiment in Case 2 and Case 3. But in Case 1 fire was not extinguished in the numerical simulation. The reason of the discrepancy between predicted and measured data was that a simple suppression algorithm has been implemented in FDS. Also, various databases of fire properties for combustible materials and more elaborate model considering the water mist were required fur better predictions of the cooling and suffocation effect.
