A Compaction Control Procedure of Railway Trackbed Fills Using Elastic Waves (탄성파를 이용한 철도노반의 다짐관리 방안)

  • The quality of track-bed fills of railways has been controlled by field measurements of density (${\gamma}_d$) and the results of plate-load tests. The control measures are compatible with the design procedures whose design parameter is $k_{30}$ for both ordinary-speed railways and high-speed railways. However, one of fatal flaws of the design procedures is that there are no simple laboratory measurement procedures for the design parameters ($k_{30}$ or, $E_{v2}$ and $E_{v2}/E_{v1}$) in design stage. A new quality control procedure, in parallel with the advent of the new design procedure, is being proposed. This procedure is based upon P-wave velocity involving consistently the evaluation of design parameters in design stage and the field measurements during construction. The key concept of the procedure is that the target value for field compaction control is the P-wave velocity determined at OMC using modified compaction test, and direct-arrival method is used for the field measurements during construction. The procedure was verified at a test site and the p-wave velocity turned out to be an excellent control measure. The specifications for the control also include field compaction water content of $OMC{\pm}2%$ as well as the p-wave velocity.

Numerical Study on the Prediction of the Depth of Improvement and Vibration Effect in Dynamic Compaction Method (동다짐 공법의 개량심도 및 진동영향 예측을 위한 수치해석적 연구)

  • In this study, an applicability by using the FEM was investigated for the prediction of both the depth of improvement and the vibration effect when dynamic compaction method is applied. The region was modelled by the field conditions applying dynamic compaction method and the rigid body force was applied to the dynamic load model. Predicted depth of improvement calculated by the vertical peak particle acceleration was compared and analyzed with an existing empirical equation, and the effect of groundwave by deducing the peak particle velocity from vibration sources was compared and analyzed with the results of another existing empirical equation. The results showed that the prediction of the depth of improvement has similar tendency to practice, and the vibration effect has some differences in a particular section from existing equation, but it could predict the safety distance to some degree. The analyzed results are expected to be basic data for the development of reliability of dynamic compaction design with existing empirical method.

  • In cases of the loosely accumulated ground and soft clayey soils, the settlement criterion usually governs in evaluating the stability of structures. The settlement is also a dominant factor to control the design of granular compaction piles mainly applied to the reinforcement of foundation structures in soft ground. In the previous studies, settlement behaviors of granular compaction piles have generally been analyzed with an evaluation of the settlement reduction factor based on the load-sharing ratio and the replacement ratio. In this approach, however, since the reinforced ground with granular compaction piles is simplified as the composite ground, only the difference of a relative vertical strength between piles and soils is taken into account without reflecting lateral behaviors of granular compaction piles. In the present study, the method of estimating the settlement of granular compaction piles is proposed by synthetically considering a vertical strength of the ground, lateral behaviors of granular compaction piles, the strength of pile materials, a pile diameter, and an installation distance of the pile. Further, far the verification of a validity of the proposed method, predicted settlements are compared with results from previous studies. In addition, parametric studies are performed together with detailed analyses of relevant design parameters.

  • This study was carried out for the settlement and camber of earth dam by the changes of the density. The testing material was taken five kinds of Soil used as banking material and it was compacted by 100, 95, 90, 85 and 80% compaction degree. The results of the settlement of earth dam whose height ranges from 10m to 50m are as follows. 1.The more the fine particle (n) increases, the higher the liquid limit (WL) and the lower the dry density (rd) becomes as follows; rd=2. 22-0. 0052n (gr/cm$_3$) rd=2. 394-0. 0164WL rd=2. 185-(5. 8n-2. 5WL)X10-$_3$ 2. The higher the optimum moisture content (Wo) becomes, the lower the density becomes as follows; rt,=2. 68-0. 028Wo rd=2. 578-0. 04Wo 3. 3.Most of the consolidation occurs immediately by loading and the more the fine particle increases, the lower the coefficient of consolidation becomes. 4.The more the fine particle increases and lower the compaction degree (D) becomes,the lower the pre-consolidation load (Pc) becomes but on the contrary the compression index (Cc) becomes higher. Those equation is as follows. Pc=3. 32-(4. 3n-3. 0D) X10-2 (kg/cm$^2$) Cc=0. 41+(1. 33n-4. 44D) X10-$^3$ 5.The more the consolidation load (P) increases, the lower the coefficient of volume change (mv) becomes with mv=ap-b, the higher the consolidation ratio (u) becomes with U= (0. 6~1. 35)PO.4 6.The more the fine particle (n) increases, the more the settlement of dam occurs with U=anb and 60-80% of the settlement occurs under construction. 7.The camber of dam has higher value in condition that has more fine particle, poorer compaction and higher height of dam. In the dam construction about twice value of table 7 is required for dam safety.

  • The function of subgrade in the railway is to support track load on the subgrade as well as train load. Unlike the traditional railway, the uppermost subgrade layer in the Gyeongbu high speed railway was constructed as the reinforced road bed. The reinforced road bed comprises sub-ballast in the upper part and grade ballast in the lower part. The filling material such as soil and rocks in the subgrade can be settled by consolidation of original ground, compression due to self weight, plastic displacement due to train operation, and unequal settlement due to embankment material or improper compaction, therefore many efforts have been given for sufficient compaction and use of proper filling materials in the construction stage. The purpose of this study is to investigate the deformation state of subgrade in the Gyeongbu high speed railway. The investigation on the subgrade settlement was performed by choosing representative sections suspected to be settled based on the previous GPR test results and track maintenance history, measuring the settlement for some time period after installing settlement measuring instruments on and under the reinforced road bed. and analyzing the long-term subgrade settlement data from monitoring system which was installed at the construction stage of the high speed railway.

Behavior of Soft Ground Improved by CSCP and SCP Using Centrifuge Modeling (원심모델링을 이용한 CSCP 및 SCP로 개량된 연약지반의 거동)

  • In this study, centrifuge model tests were performed to investigate the stress concentration ratio, bearing capacity and deformation modes of piles in clay ground improved by granular piles with two types of pile (CSCP, SCP) and various replacement ratios (0, 20, 40, 60%). According to the results of tests, the load ratio of ground improved by SCP and CSCP proportionally increased as replacement ratio increased. It shows that average normalized load of ground improved by CSCP is higher by about $8{\sim}21%$ than by SCP. As a result of rigid loading tests, it was evaluated that average stress concentration ratio of CSCP is higher than that of SCP. Only expansion failure occurred in CSCP, whereas SCP showed the expansion and shear failure simultaneously.

  • Sewage pipelines are one of important infra-structures. The main reasons of sewage pipelint failure are improper backfill materials and compaction controls in field. Especially, it is very difficult to compact the lower part of circula pipelines. In order to overcome these problems, the prefabricated light-weight plastic foundation was developed. Couple of load-displacement tests were carried out to get the characteristic of failure. From the limited laboratory loading tests, the use of prefabricated light-weight plastic foundation is an alternative to solve the difficulty of backfill materials and compaction control.

  • In this study, the Non-Destructive Testing Equipment was introduced for the compaction control and the evaluation of pavements properties and the developing process was showed. Falling Weight Deflectometer(FWD) is a system for performing non-destructive testing of pavement and the other foundation structures. The system develops forces from the acceleration caused by the arrest of a falling weight and these forces are transmitted onto the surface of a structure causing it to deflect much as it would due to the weight of a passing wheel load. The structure will bend downward and exhibit a deflection basin. FWD uses a set of velocity sensors to determine the amplitude and shape of the deflection basin. The deflection response, when related to the applied loading, can provide information about the strength and condition of the various elements of the test structure. In this study, a computer program was developed that can be used to evaluate pavement and foundation structures from the data produced by FWD. The Falling Weight Deflectometer, non-destructive testing equipment, is increasing used at the whole world.

Centrifuge Model Test on the Bearing Capacity and Failure Mechanism of Composit Ground Improved with Slag Compaction Piles (슬래그 다짐말뚝으로 개량된 복합지반의 지지력 및 파괴메카니즘에 관한 원심모형실험)

  • This paper presents experimental and numerical research results of centrifuge model tests performed to investigate the geotechnical engineering behavior of slag compaction pile as a substitute of sand compaction pile. For centrifuge model tests, bearing capacity of composit soil improved with slag compaction piles, stress concentrations in-between pile and soft clay, settlement characteristics, and failure modes were investigated with slags differing in their relative density. A slag was found to be a good substitute for a sand since the slag compaction pile model showed a greater yield stress intensity up to $30\%$ than the sand compaction pile model under the identical testing conditions. Stress concentration ratio tended to increase with the relative density of slag pile and the clear shear lines in the piles were observed at the depth of $2D{\sim}2.5D$ (D=dia. of model pile) from the top of the piles after loading tests. Numerical analysis with a software of CRISP, implemented with the modified Cam-clay model, was carried out to simulate the results of centrifuge model test. Test results about characteristics of load-settlement curves and stress concentration ratio are in relatively good agreements with numerical estimations.

  • Sewer Pipes are not being managed for twenty years after laying. So, The life span of sewer pipes is on the decrease. For solve the life span decrease of sewer pipes, correct checking of questions and measure preparation are necessary through investigation in sewer pipes. This research investigated on the state of sewer pipes in the housing and industrial sites through CCTV(closed-circuit television) and device of digitalized strain investigation. And, a result is as follows. A results of PE, PVC, GRP, CSP investigations were found of pipe-transformation state by earth pressure and external load.
