Fatigue Crack Propagation Behavior in CTS Specimen Under Mixed-Mode Loading with Hole Defefects (원공 결함을 갖는 CTS 시험편의 혼합모드 하중 하에서의 피로균열 전파거동)

  • In this study, the propagation behavior of fatigue crack effected hole defects was investigated under mixed-mode I+II loading. To create mixed-mode stress field at crack tip, the compact tension shear (CTS) specimen and loading device were used in this tests. The propagation experiments of fatigue crack were performed by changing of the loading application angle(${\phi}$) and the distance(L) estimated from pre-crack tip to hole center located side by side by side with a pre-crack. As L changes, the variation for propagation aspect of fatigue crack, fatigue life and crack propagation rate were examined under mixed-mode loading. Under mixed-mode loading, the propagation rate of fatigue crack increased while the propagation direction changed dramatically because of the interference of hole defects.

A Study on Durability and Strength Properties of Compact Tension Specimen by Material through Simulation Analysis (시뮬레이션 해석을 통한 소재 별 소형 인장 시험편의 내구성 및 강도 특성에 관한 연구)

  • There are the plastic resin, fiber and the single metal among materials. There is also the inhomogeneous material whose durability is improved as the composite material with the property of light weight. This study notices the composite material with light weight of CFRP. The strength properties of stainless steel and aluminum which have been used generally are compared and analyzed each other with CFRP. The compact tension specimen of the same standard by each material were designed and the simulation tensile analyses were carried out. As the study result, the maximum deformation, maximum stress and maxium strain energy are shown to be about 0.0148mm, 59.104MPa and 0.00529mJ respectively in case of CFRP specimen model. The maximum deformation, maximum stress and maxium strain energy were shown to be about 0.0106mm, 42.22MPa and 0.002699mJ respectively at stainless steel. It could be checked that the maximum deformation, maximum stress and maxium strain energy of aluminum specimen model were shown to be about 0.023mm, 33.29MPa and 0.00464mJ respectively at stainless steel. Therefore, the results at this study are thought to be applied with the basic data on the strength property of CFRP composite material.

Estimation of the Fracture Resistance Curve for the Nuclear Piping Using the Standard Compact Tension Specimen (표준 CT시험편을 이용한 실배관 파괴저항 곡선 예측)

  • The estimation method of the fracture resistance curve for the pipe specimen was proposed using the load ratio method for the standard specimen. For this, the calculation method of the load - CMOD curve for the pipe specimen with the common format equation(CFE) was proposed by using data of the CT specimen. The proposed method agreed well with experimental data. The J-integral value and the crack extension were calculated from the estimated load - CMOD data. The fracture resistance curve was estimated from the calculated J-integral and the crack extension. From these results, it have been seen that the proposed method is reliable to estimate the J-R curve of the pipe specimen.

Effect of Specimen Size on Fatigue crack Growth Rate in Steels (강재의 피로균열전파율에 미치는 시험편 크기의 영향)

  • This paper describes the effect of specimen size on fatigue crack growth rate for the offshore structural high-tensile-strength steel BS4360 and machine structural steel SM45C. The purpose of the present study is to investigate the effect of stress ratio aspect ratio specimen width and specimen thickness of the fatigue crack growth behavior. Compact tension specimens with a LT orientation for BS4360 and SM45C steels were used, All testing was done at constant stress intensity factor range controlled fatigue crack growth condition. The investigation demonstrates that the fatigue crack growth rate is increased with increasing stress ratio and specimen thickness and is decreased with increasing specimen width. The fatigue crack growth rate is unaffected by aspect ratio until a/W=0.50 but is increased by increasing spect ratio from a/W=0.55.

  • The paper presents the preliminary results of an esperimental study on crack growth under tension-tension fatigue loading. A purpose of the study is to find the effect of the specimen thickness on crack propagation behaviors. The thickness of the low catbon steel specimens the are used in the experiments are 5, 10, 15,20, and 25 mm. the type of specimen considering in the present study is compact tension specimen.Crack growth behaviors are obseved and measured by travelling microscope. From the study, the followings are found; 1. There is a certain specimen thickness that is the shortest farigue life. The fatigue life of 15mm specimen is the shorter then that of any other opecimen 2. The crack initiation of the thick specimen is slower than that of thin specimen. But the crack propagation rate is just the opposite. 3. The range which is the exponent, m of power law(paris) is 1.98-4.59. the thicker the spec-imen is, the higher the value of m is.

  • The purpose of this paper is to investigate fatigue crack behavior under shear(Mode II) loading. Various specimens and devices have been used in order to produce Mode II loading in fatigue experiments for shear crack propagation. But, there is not sufficient comparisons of experimental results between Mode II and others loading modes, because of characteristics of applied loads and specimens. So, compact tension shear(CTS) specimens were used in this paper to investigate the propagation behavior of Mode II by comparing the experimental results between loading modes. We firstly observed the characteristics which was showed in Mode II experiment using CTS specimens. The experimental results under Mode II loading were compared with fatigue crack behavior under Mode I and Mixed-mode I+II loading. The characteristics for initiation and propagation behavior under Mode II loading was investigated by such comparisons.

Prediction of Elastic-Plastic Fracture Toughness for Metallic Material using Finite Element Method (유한요소법에 의한 금속재료의 탄소성파괴인성 예측)

  • In order to predict the elastic-plastic fracture toughness for metallic materials, Finite Element Method(FEM) was used for analysis of compact tension specimen. ASTM E399 test procedure was adopted for simulation of FEM. The Load-Crack Mouth Opening Displacement curve obtained from this analysis was used to detect the crack initiation point and determine the elastic-plastic fracture toughness $J_{IC}$. In order to prove the results, they were compared with the results from previous experiments and they agree with experimental results.

Analytical methods for determination of double-K fracture parameters of concrete

  • This paper presents a comparative study on the double-K fracture parameters of concrete obtained using four existing analytical methods such as Gauss-Chebyshev integral method, simplified Green's function method, weight function method and simplified equivalent cohesive force method. Two specimen geometries: three point bend test and compact tension specimen for sizes 100-500 mm at initial notch length to depth ratios 0.25 and 0.4 are used for the comparative study. The required input parameters for determining the double-K fracture parameters are derived from the developed fictitious crack model. It is found that the cohesive toughness and initial cracking toughness determined using weight function method and simplified equivalent cohesive force method agree well with those obtained using Gauss-Chebyshev integral method whereas these fracture parameters determined using simplified Green's function method deviates more than by 11% and 20% respectively as compared with those obtained using Gauss-Chebyshev integral method. It is also shown that all the fracture parameters related with double-K model are size dependent.

Plastic Displacement Estimates in Creep Crack Growth Testing (크리프 균열 성장 실험을 위한 소성 변위 결정법)

  • The ASTM test standard recommends the use of the compact tension specimen for creep crack growth rates measurement. In the creep crack growth rate test, the displacement rate due to creep is obtained by subtracting the contribution of elastic and plastic components from the total load line displacement rate based on displacement partitioning method fur determining $C^*-integral$, which involves Ramberg-Osgood (R-O) fitting procedures. This paper investigates the effect of the R-O fitting procedures on plastic displacement rate estimates in creep crack growth testing, via detailed two-dimensional and three-dimensional finite element analyses of the standard compact tension specimen. Four different R-O fitting procedures are considered; (i) fitting the entire true stress-strain data up to the ultimate tensile strength, (ii) fitting the true stress-strain data from 0.1% strain to 0.8 of the true ultimate strain, (iii) fitting the true stress-strain data only up to 5% strain, and (iv) fitting the engineering stress-strain data. It is found that the last two procedures provide reasonably accurate plastic displacement rates and thus should be recommended in creep crack growth testing. Moreover, several advantages of fitting the engineering stress-strain data over fitting the true stress-strain data only up to 5% strain are discussed.
