  • We examined dietary habits, food intakes, health status, and school and community life of meal skipping children, and investigated factors predicting meal skipping of children. A sample was composed of 944 children in low-income families who were provided with public meal service. The sample was obtained from the Survey of Meal Service for Poor Children conducted by the Korea Institute for Health and Social Affairs in 2007. Meal skipping was significantly associated with a lower nutrition and health status, and poor school performance of children, as hypothesized. The school age of child, family structure, region, job of caretaker, concern about diet, and the child's visit to welfare center significantly predicted frequency of meal skipping. We suggested a few implications for community practice to reduce meal skipping of children.

  • Purpose: This study attempts to examine the extent to which competencies were identified in a Korean community nursing practice based on the 11 core competencies required by US health nurses. Methods: This was a descriptive research study, and the subjects of this study were 11 students who were in a four-year nursing course. Data were collected by means of a questionnaire from October 19 to November 22, 2016. Results: Core competencies in total were practiced in 60.0% to 98.5% of schools in Korea. Among these, competencies corresponding to the practice level of 'high' were identified as 'communicating effectively with community nursing subjects and colleagues, and accepting various personal characteristics without criticism or prejudice'. On the other hand, competencies corresponding to the practice level of 'low' were identified as 'to comply with social justice, public good, public health principles, and leadership in a community nursing practice'. Conclusion: This study can be used as a resource to categorize the competence of nursing students expected in the field of community nursing. Based on a careful review of core competencies with low practice, it is necessary to seek specific practical strategies to strengthen these competencies in the future.

  • This study was a cross-sectional descriptive survey study that confirms the effect on subjects that prefer clinical practice in order to prepare basic data for efficient clinical practice guidance for nursing college students. The study participants were 201 students attending C University, and the data collection period was from October 1 to October 15, 2022. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS 18.0 as descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation, Chi square test, ANOVA test, and Multiple regression test. As a result of the analysis, it was found that clinical decision-making and critical thinking were correlated under the statistical significance level (r=.730, p<0.01). The most favorite clinical practice department was community nursing, and male students preferred community nursing the most (Male=45.6%, χ2=.000), female students were found to prefer similar levels of practical subjects with child nursing , adult nursing, and maternal nursing(χ2=000).Clinical decision-making was found to be higher in students who preferred community nursing at a statistical significance level than those who preferred child nursing (F=4.91, p<0.01). Critical thinking was higher among students who preferred adult nursing than those who preferred other subjects (F=4.65, p<0.01). Through the analysis results, it was found that general characteristics vary, but clinical decision-making ability and critical thinking affect the preference of clinical practice subjects. Therefore, based on the results of this study, the professor of clinical practice suggests the development of a program to foster clinical decision-making and critical thinking to make students interested in clinical practice subjects.

  • Purpose: This study investigated hand-washing practice among community-dwelling older adults during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and aimed to identify the impact of COVID-19-related concerns and depression on hand-washing practice. Methods: This was a secondary analysis of data extracted from the 2020 Community Health Survey. The primary data were collected through self-reporting from August 10 to September 8, 2020 in a cross-sectional study. The subjects comprised of 1,350 adults aged 65 or older living in Jeju Province who participated in the 2020 Community Health Survey. Results: The factors affecting hand-washing practice among older adults were male older adults (β = -.18, p < .001), age (β = -.07, p = .001), no education (β = -.20, p < .001) and elementary, middle, and high school graduation (β = -.15, p < .001) compared to a college or higher education, poor health perception (β = -.13, p < .001), COVID-19-related concerns (β = .08, p = .005), and depression (β = -.07, p = .001). To summarize, the factors negatively affecting hand-washing practice included male gender, lower education level, poor health perception, and depression. In contrast, factors positively associated with hand-washing practice included COVID-19-related concerns. Conclusion: These findings show the importance of considering these multifaceted determinants when designing targeted interventions and educational programs to promote hand-washing among older adults. Additionally, based on the relationship between hand-washing practice and COVID-19-related concerns and depression, interventions that can alleviate mental problems along with providing proper education are required.

  • This paper examines the level of community solidarity in an administrative district in Seoul, Korea. This paper focuses on the following questions: what is the level of community solidarity in the district? and what are the major predictors of community solidarity?. Using the data from the 2000 community survey about residents' needs conducted by the welfare administration office of the district, this paper attempts to answer the above research questions. In analyzing the effect of community solidarity, this paper focuses on the following four predictor categories: individual characteristics; community related characteristics such as degree of marginalization; community participation, and community problems. Results are as follows: (1) the average of community solidarity is 3.1, using 5 points scale; and (2) the variables such as marginalization and community problem have a negative effect on the level of community solidarity; and (3) community participation has a positive effect on the level of community solidarity. Through the empirical analysis. this paper provides valuable knowledge about the level of community solidarity and effects of community participation, marginalization, and community problem on community solidarity. Finally, this paper discusses implications for effective community practice on the basis of the exploratory findings about community solidarity in Korea.

  • From 1990 to 1997 Home Care Education Programs have been offered at 11 Home Care Education Institutes. But there have been no revisions in the program. Especially in the clinical practicum, the Ministry of Health and Welfare proposed 248 hours as 'Family Nursing and Practice'. But each of institutes has developed their own program, and the clinical practicum is very different. Institutions for home care practice have been very limited and even now only 40 hospitals started home care in the second demonstration project. A few community-based institutions have also been offering home care services. This study was conducted to analyze home care clinical practicum offered at Y university, and plan for a revised home care clinical practicum. Y university clinical practicum was revised to include 'visits to community institutions', 'laboratory practice', 'hospital practice', 'discharge planning and home care practice', and 'home care specialty practice'. The results of the evaluation and plan for a revision are as follows: 'Visits to community institutions' is a practice that helps the students understand community resources which are available to home care nurses, and as an orientation to institutions for practice. 'Laboratory practice' is to used to improve nursing skills that are applicable to home care. Problems that the students identified in the laboratory practice were 'lack of opportunity for individual practice', and 'inadequate theoretical preparation for practice'. To address these problems the basic nursing skills laboratory was open and could be used freely by the home care students, and practice could be done after the theoretical lectures. 'Hospital practice' is a practicum in which the students apply nursing skills to patients and to obtain assessment skills for discharge planning. Using a preceptorship, five days for hospital practice should be offered. 'Discharge planning and home care practice' was done at Wonju Christian Hospital. This institute is too far away that this practice should be provided at different institutions as soon as it is possible to contract with home care institutions. Patients groups in different home care institutions are very different, so the 'Home care specialty practice' should be done after analyzing patient groups and choosing specialty areas. These areas are' care of patients with respiratory dysfunction', 'care of patients with neurologic dysfunction', 'care of cancer patients', 'care of patients on dialysis', and 'wound care'. This practice should be offered with a preceptorship, so preceptors, clinical directors, and students should meet for home visit orientation.

  • Purpose: The objective of this study was to understand the meaning of experience on community health centers (post) practice of nursing students. Methods: This is qualitative research using focus groups. Data were collected through in-depth interviews performed from November 10 to December 11, 2009. The focus group interviews were conducted to 22 nursing students on their subjective experiences. The data were analyzed by the Colaizzi's method, in which the meaningful statements were extracted. Results: Seven theme-clusters were identified from fourteen themes and thirty-one sub-themes. The seven theme-clusters were 1) widening of experiences; 2) feeling of warm heart; 3) feeling of satisfaction; 4) feeling of being unfulfilled; 5) difficulties; 6) new awareness; and 7) good memories. Conclusion: Through a variety of relationships and self-regulation in community health centers (post) practice, the nursing students may have the feeling of worthiness, new awareness of community nursing, and visions for the future to rebuild.
