  • Sparganium japonicum Rothert. is designated as a near threatened species by the National Institute of Biological Resources and is restrictively distributed in South Korea. To conserve and restore habitats of this plant, we investigated environmental characteristics and vegetation at five habitats during the growing season. Thirty plant species from seventeen families were found in the S. japonicum community. The species frequently found in this community included Utricularia vulgaris, Potamogeton distinctus, Phragmites japonica, Cicuta virosa, Persicaria thunbergii, Phragmites communis, Hydrilla verticillata. Maximum height of this plant reached at August and average height at five habitats is 120 cm at this time. Water and soil environmental factors showed low values compared with that of other wetlands. S. japonicum lived in not only shallow water level but also deep water level. These results can be helpful for S. japonicum habitat conservation and restoration.

  • The purpose of this study was to assess the structure of the decision and the importance of the attributes in choosing food-related tour program. Questionnaires were developed in three languages- Japanese, Chinese, and English- given to 300 foreign tourists who have visited Korea in 2002. Statistical data analysis was completed using SPSS Win (ver 11.0) for descriptive analysis and conjoint analysis. The results of this study showed that the 'price' was the most important attribute (35.62%) in choosing a hypothetical food tourism program, followed by 'place' (27.35%), 'time' (26.01 %), and 'type of program' (10.22%). With respect to the relative importance values for each attribute by different groups, English- and Chinese-speaking tourists considered 'price' more than other factors, while 'time' was regarded as the most important factor for Japanese tourists. Therefore, it indicated the need to recognize the different needs among tourists and put these factors into consideration in developing the programs.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the properties of baguettes containing buckwheat flour. Physical properties of the bread flour mixed with buckwheat flour were tested by rapid visco analyzer(RVA), farinogram, and alveogram. Water activity of baguettes were measured and their properties were tested by rheometer. As the amount of buckwheat flour increased the peak viscosity and the holding strength were decreased, but the set back value was increased. Therefore, buckwheat flour prevented the gelatinization process. As the amount of buckwheat flour increased, the consistency and water absorption were increased, but development and stability were lower than the control. The bread flour containing high amount of buckwheat flour resulted in less breakdown and low farinogram quality number. As the amount of buckwheat flour was increased, Pmax, L, G, and W values were decreased on alveogram. The water activity and the springness of all samples were decreased during the storage, but the hardness was increased, especially after two days of storage. The sensory properties of baguette containing 10% buckwheat flour had the best scores.

  • Seasonal changes of aquatic environmental factors, phytoplankton biomass and primary productivity were investigated in the Jido pond (a phytoplankton proliferating pond) from August 1982 to October 1983. Secchi disc transparency, pH, alkalinity and inorganic nitrogen concentration ranged 24~105cm, 7.5~10.6, 50~175mgCaCO3/l 0.1~4.0mgN/l, respectively. The minimum values of transparency, alkalinity and inorganic nitrogen concentration and the maximum value of pH were obtained during the phytoplankton proliferating season. The phytoplankton biomass changed in the range of 51~1146mgchl/m3 with considerable fluctuations but maintained fairly constant in winter. Themaximum and minimum rates of monthly carbon inflow (net primary production) of the phytoplankton community attained 1190gc/m2 in August 1982 and 68g/m2 in February 1983, respectively. The annual rates of inflow and outflow from August 1982 to July 1983 were 7.384 and 7.396kgc/m2, respectively. Turnover rate of phytoplankton carbon and efficiency of radiation of the phytoplankton community varied in the ranges of 60~130%/day (annual mean, 90%/day) and 0.9~11.2% (annual mean, 6.3%), respectively.

  • The current exploratory study investigates and compares the perceptions of the service quality of in-flight meals through the evaluation of recent consumers (within 2 weeks) of services provided by Korean and foreign-based airlines. Twenty (20) items for measuring service quality were categorized into three factor dimensions of 'food quality', 'employee service', and 'professionalism'. Among these, 'employee service' was rated highest by Korean and foreign-based airlines. When items representing each service quality dimension were analyzed and compared, only the 'food quality' dimension of Korean-based airlines was perceived higher than that of other foreign-based airlines. Findings also revealed a spectrum with some items with higher or lower mean values within each service quality dimension. Results of this study can expectedly be used to benefit both from a theoretical and practical point of view by providing empirical data that measure the service quality of in-flight meal service.

  • This study tried to establish a tentative renewal guideline on spatial structure of the Hub-myun's center villages which would be positioned as sub-centers in the rural settlement hierarchy in Korea. Space Syntax Method was used to analyze the locational characteristics of community facilities in the center villages of 8 pilot project areas which were selected in the nationwide scale. The base-maps for spatial analysis works were prepared firstly from satellite pictures and adjusted through field check. Generally, connectivity and global integration values of center villages were calculated as higher than hinterland villages, which would mean better accessible spatial characteristics in the center villages. And a tentative renewal guideline was proposed for road route improvement and relocation of community facilities in the Hub-myun's center villages.

  • The purpose of this study was to find the existential meanings of the culturally marginalized community organization. Based on the findings, the study examined the issues related to operating the organization and found the ways of helping such organization through service learning programs. For the study, the researcher chose the Korean school of Knoxville in the USA as a service community organization. This study used a qualitative method using narrative construction in the nature of the text shapes with first-person point of views. The research findings were discussed based on the observations and participation in the organization. The study found that the Korean school plays a role as a cultural liaison connecting the Korean culture to other cultures while enabling students to critically accept their native systems, values, and customs through understanding of their native language. However, problems were found in operating the school due to the lack of skills and knowledge of the school administration. Suggestions were made and implemented to the school in order to improve the performance of the school.

  • The study was carried out to analyze vegetation structure of Mt. Eungbok located in Jochimryeong to Shinbaeryeong of the Baekdudaegan mountain range. The survey for 25 plots was conducted from April 2012 to August 2013 in the permanent plots using phytosociological analysis. As a result, the vegetations were classified into four vegetation units. In species composition, they were classified into Quercus mongolica community group divided into 2 community such as Ulmus laciniata community and Corylus sieboldiana var. mandshurica community, U. laciniata community was subdivided Rhododendron schlippenbachii group and Rubus crataegifolius group(into Viola albida subgroup, Rubus oldhamii subgroup). In terms of Importance values according to layer-specific and altitude of ridge, Q. mongolica was the highest importance value of tree layer and Acer pseudosieboldianum was highest importance value of sub tree layer. Therefore Q. mongolica and A. pseudosieboldianum could likely remain in the future of tree layer and sub tree layer respectively. Analysis of dominance most value of vegetation are on about 0.3. In ridge area was a species diversity result, vegetation unit 3 showed the highest value 0.974 and vegetation unit 1 showed the lowest value 0.725. Based on the interspecific association showed four types which were coincident with differential species and character species on the constancy table. Specially type I plant species were mostly differential species and the characteristic species, which appeared in the Rhododendron schlippenbachii community classified phytosociologically, and type III plant species were mostly the species appearing in the Corylus sieboldiana var. mandshurica community growing in the relatively.

  • The floristic characteristics and ecological conservation measures for the plant resources of the Tokyusan National Park. Chollapuk-do, Korea were discussed. The field works was done for three times in nine major areas from April to July, 1993. The total number of vascular plants in this area were summarized as 97 families, 297 genera, 469 species and 541 kinds. The nineteen kinds of artificially planted, twelve kinds of Korean endemics and sixteen kinds of Korean rare and endangered species in the area were revised and compiled in the list. The flora of the area were categorized into the Southern part of the Korean Region, where the species such as Quercus serrata. Fraxinus sieboldiana, Ilex macropoda, Lindera erythrocarpa, Lindera glauca, Rubus coreanus, Taxus cuspidata, Cephalotaxus koreana and Abies koreana were roled as major floristic components in the Korean Region and endemized in the southern part of Korea. The natural communities such as Adonis amurensis Community, Taxus cuspidata Community, Betula ermanii Community, Hemerocalis spp. Community, Rhododendron tschnoskii Community, Rhododendron schlippenbachii Community, Disporum ovale Community, Tricyrtis dilatata Community, and present natural distribution of Abies koreana, and swamp vegetation in Tumunsan areas, as well as upland grassland at the summit of Hyangchokpong were represented for their floristic values in the area. The fifteen kinds of medicinal plants such as Gastrodia elata, seven kinds of ornamental plants such as Adonis amurensis, and thirteen kinds of edible plants such as Ligularia fischeri are faced potentially in endangered from the outrageous collections by the local peoples. The Action Plan for the conservation management of the area which enables sustainable use by the local peoples must be established in the near future.
