  • The next generation of diesel engine can operate at high injection pressure up to 1,800bar. The common rail pipe must have higher internal strength because it is directly influenced by the high-pressure fuel. Folding defects in the Common rail pipe can not ensure the structural safety. Therefore, Preform design and fatigue-life analysis are very important for preventing the head of the common rail pipe from folding in the heading process and for predicting fatigue life according to the amount of folding. In this study, a closed form equation to predict fatigue life was suggested by Goodman theory and pressure vessels theory in ASME Code in order to develop an optimization technique of the heading process and verified its reliability through fatigue-structural coupled field analysis. The results calculated by the theory were in good agreement with those obtained by the finite element analysis.

  • Recently the direct injection diesel engine is the most efficient one available for road vehicles, so this fundamental advantage suggests the compression injection diesel engine are a wise choice for future development efforts. The compression ignition diesel engine, with its bigger compression ratios if compared to the SI engine, offers a higher thermodynamic efficiency, also additionally the diesel engine with its less pumping losses due to the throttled intake charge as in a SI engine has higher fuel economy. But the largest obstacle to the success of this engine is meeting emission standards for Nitric oxides and particulate matter while maintain fuel consumption advantage over currently available engines. Thus its use should be largely promoted, however, diesel engine emits more Nitric oxides and particulate matter than other competing one. There has been a trade-off between PM and NOx, so efforts to reduce NOx have increased PM and vice versa, but trap change this situation and better possibility emerge for treating NOx emission with engine related means, such as injection timing, equivalence ratio, charge composition, and engine speed. The common rail direct injection system is able to adjust the fuel injection timing in a compression ignition engine, so this electronically controlled injection system can reduce the formation of NOx gas without increase in soot. In this study it is designed and used the engine test bed which is installed with turbocharge and intercooler. In addition to equipped using CRDI by controlling injection timing with mapping modulator, it has been tested and analyzed the engine performance, combustion characteristics, and exhaust emission as operating parameters.

  • This study was performed to figure out spray behavior and fuel atomization characteristics of a piezo-driven injector and a solenoid-driven injector in the common-rail injection system under the same design parameters and test conditions. The process of spray injection was visualized by using the spray visualization system composed of a Nd:YAG laser and an ICCD camera. The atomization characteristics were investigated in terms of axial mean velocity, Sauter mean diameter(SMD) and droplet distributions obtained from a phase Doppler particle analyzer system. Compared with solenoid-driven injector, the piezo-driven injector has short injection delay and reaches quickly to the maximum injection value. Spray tip penetration shows some difference, however, spray angle of piezo-driven injector is wider than that of solenoid-driven injector. Sauter mean diameter of piezo-driven type injector is smaller than that of solenoid-driven type.

  • A demand for bio-diesel oil increases as one of solution for exhaustion of fossil fuel and reduction of $CO_2$ emission, and research on bio-diesel is being carried out. Bio-diesel oil is mainly esterified from vegetable oil with methanol in order to use for fuel on diesel engine and has demerit that costs are increased as compared with directly using like non-esterified one. Bio-diesel oil within 3% mixed with gas oil is used at present, proportion of bio-diesel oil will be increase by 5% in future. We judged that wasted soybean oil non-esterified could be used on diesel engine with an electronic fuel injection according to previous researches with a mechanical fuel injection. A performance test using only gas oil, gas oil with esterified bio-diesel oil 5% and wasted soybean oil non-esterified 5% on diesel engine with the electronic fuel injection were carried out. It is noticed that gas oil with wasted soybean oil non-esterified 5% has more similar characteristics to gas oil than gas oil with esterified bio-diesel oil 5%.

  • This paper describes the effects of biodiesel blended fuel on the engine combustion and emission characteristics in a four cylinder CRDI(Common-rail direct injection) diesel engine. In this work, the biodiesel-diesel blended fuel(20% of biodiesel and 80% of ULSD(ultra low sulfur diesel) by volume ratio, BD20) and ULSD fuel are used under the various injection pressures and engine speeds. The experimental results of BD20 and ULSD fuel show that NOx emissions were increased and soot emissions were decreased with the increase of injection pressure. In particular, NOx emissions were slightly increased for the BD20 fuel, however, soot emissions were significantly reduced compared to the ULSD fuel. When the engine speed is increased from 1000rpm to 2000rpm, NOx emissions are decreased at all tested conditions, and soot emissions are largely increased at lower injection pressure.

  • The performance of a direct-injection diesel engine often depends on the strength of swirl or squish, the shape of combustion chamber, the number of nozzle holes, etc. This is natural because the combustion in the cylinder was affected by the mixture formation process. Since the available duration to make the mixture formation of air-fuel is very short, it is difficult to make complete mixture. Therefore, an early stage of combustion is violent, which leads to the weakness of noise and vibration. In this paper, the combustion process of a common-rail diesel engine was studied by employing two kinds of pistons. One has several grooves with inclined plane on the piston crown to generate swirl during the compression and expansion strokes in the cylinder in order to improve the atomization of fuel. The other is a toroidal piston, generally used in high speed diesel engines. To take photographs of flame and flaming duration, a four-stroke diesel engine was remodeled into a two-stroke visible single cylinder engine and a high speed video camera was used.

  • An experimental study was performed to assess the effect of diesel and JP-8 aviation fuel on the spray characteristics, performance and emissions in a single cylinder optical diesel engine. Both fuels were injected via an 8-hole solenoid-driven injector in a common-rail injection system. For better understanding of spray development, the macroscopic images were captured with high speed camera, offered evidences for the results of performance and emissions. From macroscopic spray images, the spray tip penetration of JP-8 shorter than that of diesel while spray angle of JP-8 was wider than that of diesel. It indicates that the vaporization of JP-8 is superior to that of diesel. The lower cetane number of JP-8 resulted in increased portion of premixed combustion. The IMEP with JP-8 is lower than that of diesel-fueled engine. Especially, using JP-8 has a potential for reducing soot.

  • The effects of change in injection pressure on spray structure in high temperature and pressure field have been investigated. The analysis of liquid and vapor phases of injected fuel is important for emissions control of diesel engines. Therefore, this work examines the evaporating spray structure using a constant volume vessel. The injection pressure is selected as the experimental parameter, is changed from 400 bar to 800 bar by using a common rail injection system. Also, we conducted simulation study by modified KIVA-II code. The results of simulation study are compared with experimental results. The images of liquid and vapor phase for free spray were simultaneously taken by exciplex fluorescence method. As experimental results, the vapor concentration of injected fuel is leaner due to the increase of atomization in the case of the high injection pressure than in that of the low injection pressure. The calculated results obtained by modified KIVA-II code show good agreements with experimental results.

  • The purpose of this study was compared the spray, combustion and emissions (NOx, CO, HC, smoke) characteristics of a typical fuel (100% Diesel, DME) and Diesel-DME blended fuel in a Constant Volume Chamber (CVC) and a single-cylinder DI diesel engine. Spray characteristics were investigated under various ambient and fuel injection pressures when the Diesel-DME blended ratio is varied. The parameters of spray sturdy were spray shape, penetration length, and spray angle. Common types of injectors having seven holes and made by Bosch were used. As of use, the typical fuel (100% Diesel, DME) and the blended fuel by mixture ratio 95:5, 90:10 (Diesel:DME) were used. The Injection pressure was fixed by 70.1MPa, when the ambient Pressure was varied 0.1, 2.6 and 5.1 MPa. The combustion experiments was conducted with single cylinder engine equipped with common rail injection system. injection pressure is 70 MPa. The amount of injected fuels is adjusted to obtain the fixed input calorie value as 972.2 J/cycle in order to compare with the fuel conditions.

  • In this study we investigated the regeneration methods for the lean $NO_x$ trap (LNT) catalyst in a 2.2L direct injection diesel engine. The regeneration methods were 1) in-cylinder post fuel injection and 2) external fuel injection strategy. The in-cylinder post fuel injection method uses in-cylinder injectors with the addition of the post fuel injection to supply enough reductants such as CO, $H_2$, THC. The external fuel injection method was enabled by installing a fuel injector with a wide spray angle before the LNT catalyst. Through the engine experiment, the $NO_x$ conversion efficiency, the amount of reductant exhaust gases, fuel consumption, and temperature behavior in the LNT catalyst were evaluated and compared for the two regeneration methods.
