In this research, in order to study the spray, combustion, and emission characteristics of the common rail DME engine, the target engine was disassembled, and 3D CAD file was constructed using a 3D measurement machine and a rapid prototyping machine. Using the obtained 3D geometry, fine moving meshes are generated, and three dimensional non-steady turbulence flow field and combustion phenomenon including spray were numerically analyzed. As a result, IMEP of DME and diesel in medium and high speed revolution showed similar performance. As the DME fuel start to burn in spray area, the vaporized fuel rapidly spreads squish area in low speed revolution. In the case of DME engine, CO and NOx are relatively consistent with experiment results. It was found that the break-up, evaporation, collision model of DME fuel need to be properly adjusted through matching the characteristics of fuel and injector for further improvement.
In the electro-hydraulic injector for the common rail Diesel fuel injection system, the injection nozzle is being opened and closed by movement of a injector's needle which is balanced by pressure at the nozzle seat and at the needle control chamber, at the opposite end of the needle. In this study, the piezo actuator was considered as a prime movers in high pressure Diesel injector. Namely a piezo-driven Diesel injector, as a new method driven by piezoelectric energy, has been applied with a purpose to develop the analysis model of the piezo actuator to predict the dynamics characteristics of the hydraulic component(injector) by using the AMESim code. Aimed at simulating the hydraulic behavior of the piezo-driven injector, the circuit model has been developed and verified by comparison with the experimental results. As this research results, we found that the input voltage exerted on piezo stack is the dominant factor which affects on the initial needle behavior of piezo-driven injector than the hydraulic force generated by the constant injection pressure. Also we know the piezo-driven injector has more degrees of freedom in controlling the injection rate with the high pressure than a solenoid-driven injector.
In recent years, compression ignition engine has been equipped with some control devices such as common rail injection system and turbocharger. In order to control the large number of input parameter appropriately in consideration of $NO_x$, HC and engine power as the engine output objectives. The model construction which reproduces the characteristic value of $NO_x$, HC and engine power from input parameter is needed. In this research, the stepwise method was applied to construct the compression ignition engine model. By using the preliminary experimental data of single cylinder compression ignition engine, the prediction model of $NO_x$, HC and engine power on single injection compression ignition engine was built and compared with the main experimental data.
Biodiesel fuel is already remarkable alternative fuel in many countries. So, many studies are performed on the environmental or economic effects as well as the characteristics of diesel engine fueled biodiesel in combustion and emission. In this study, an CRDI diesel engine used to commercial vehicle was fueled with diesel fuel and 20% biodiesel blended fuel (BDF 20%) with city mode in excess of 300 hours. Engine dynamometer testing was completed at regularly scheduled intervals to monitor the engine performance and exhaust emissions. The engine performance and exhaust emissions were sampled at 1 hour interval for analysis. To check the engine parts (valve and injector), the engine was inspected after test. It was concluded that there were no unusual deteriorations of the engine, or any unusual changes in engine power and exhaust emissions in spite of operation of 300 hours with BDF 20%.
This study is to investigate the effect of the distillation temperature in ultra low sulfur diesel fuel on exhaust emissions in the low-temperature diesel combustion with 1.9L common rail direct injection diesel engine. Low temperature diesel combustion was achieved by adopting an external high EGR rate with a strategic injection control. The engine was operated at 1500 rpm 2.6 bar BMEP. The 90% distillation recovery temperature (T90) was $270^{\circ}C$ and $340^{\circ}C$ for the respective cetane number (CN) 30 and 55. It was found that there exists no distinctive discrepancy on exhaust emissions with regards to the different T90s. The high CN (CN55) fuels follow the similar trend of exhaust emissions as observed in CN30 fuels' except that high T90 fuel (CN55-T340) produced higher PM compared to low T90 fuel (CN55-T270). This may come from that high T90 plays an active role in aggravating the degree of fuel-air mixture preparedness before ignition.
The static and dynamic behaviour of VGT and EGR systems has a significant impact on overall engine performance, fuel economy and exhaust emissions. This is because they define the state and composition of the air charge entering the engine. This work focused on the effect of the aperture ratio of VGT and EGR on the emission and flow characteristics under partial loads conditions. The investigation carried out using 2 liter PCCI 4 cylinder diesel engine with VGT and EGR. The result of this study shows that smoke increases with increasing EGR rate and NOx decreases with increasing EGR rate. It was also found that the residual gas contents greatly impact on soot emission under partial load condition. Finally, it can be concluded that VGT and EGR aperture ratio can greatly impact not only on soot and NOx but also air charging.
In this study, experimental approaching method was applied under and single-cylinder engine to research the performance of direct needle-driven piezo injector (DPI) for CR direct-injection. As key-point factor of this DPI that relies on direct-acting operating of injector needle, unlike conventional hydraulic-servo, its nozzle needle can be directly driven by piezo actuator. Thus, effect of direct-acting injection of DPI on diesel combustion and emission characteristics was investigated under common-rail single-cylinder direct-injection engine, equipped with three different driving mechanism, including indirect-acting solenoid, piezo and DPI system. As main results, it found that a direct-acting piezo injector has higher of IMEP. And it has higher heat release rate during premixed combustion and mixing controlled combustion phase due to its higher heat release, even though nitrogen oxide (NOx) formations were increased slightly.
Recently, PCCI (premixed charge compression ignition) combustion is studied to reduce both NOx and PM because of homogeneous mixture formation and lower combustion temperature. It has also merit of increasing thermal efficiency owing to better air-fuel mixure. However, it is well known that PCCI combustion has a weakness in fuel economy because PCCI combustion tends to start before TDC. Therefore, it is necessary to find an optimal conditions for PCCI combustion which maintains reduction of NOx, PM and increase of thermal efficiency. In this study, pPCCI combustion was realized by adding early injection strategy to a conventional diesel engine. In addition, the characteristics of pPCCI combustion was analized by comparing conventional diesel injection strategy. The results show that NOx and PM per power in pPCCI combution were reduced compared to a conventional diesel combustion.
Recently, there has been an interest in premixed diesel engines as it has the potential of achieving a more homogeneous and leaner mixture close to TDC compared to conventional diesel engines. Because this concept reduced NOx and smoke emissions simultaneously. Early studies are shown that in a HCCI(Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition) engine, the fuel injection timing and intake air temperature affect the mixture formation. The purpose of this study is to investigate characteristics of combustion and mixture formation according to injection timing and intake air temperature in a common rail direct injection type HCCI engine using an early injection method called the PCCI(Premixed Charge Compression Ignition). From this study, we found that the fuel injection timing and intake air temperature affect the mixture formation and in turn affects combustion in the PCCI engine.
