Much attention has given to EMI effects created by variable speed ac drive system. This paper focuses on the switching technique to mitigate common mode voltage. Zero switching states of inverter control invoke large common mode voltage. Using inversed carrier wave, zero switching states are removed. In addition, proposed technique is easy to apply to existing 2-level inverter design. Simulation results show that common mode voltages adapting proposed technique are reduced regarding conventional method.
In this paper, an approach to reduce common-mode voltage (CMV) at the output of multilevel inverters using a phase opposition disposed (POD) sinusoidal pulse width modulation (SPWM) technique is proposed. The SPWM technique does not require computations therefore, this technique is easy to implement on-line in digital controllers. A good tradeoff between the quality of the output voltage and the magnitude of the CMV is achieved in this paper. This paper realizes the implementation of a POD-SPWM technique to reduce CMV using a five-level diode clamped inverter for a three phase induction motor. Experimental and simulation results demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed technique.

This paper proposes a new PWM method to reduce the common mode voltage change in three-level Vienna rectifier. This new proposed PWM method uses medium voltage vector for the three-level Vienna rectifier to determine the sum of three-phase voltage zero, and the common mode voltage variation is decreased. Using the carrier comparison method, the switching function generator for three-level Vienna rectifier has been proposed. The effects of the proposed PWM method have been verified through simulation using the PSIM.
Common mode voltage (CMV) generation is a major problem in switching power converter fed induction motor drive systems. CMV is the zero sequence voltage generated due to the switching action of power converters. Even a small magnitude of CMV with a high rate of change may circulate large bearing currents which may damage a machine's bearings and shorten its life. There are several methods of controlling CMV. This paper presents 3-level sinusoidal pulse width modulation based techniques to control the magnitude and rate of change of CMV in multilevel AC-DC-AC drive systems. Simulation and experimental investigations have been presented to validate the performance of proposed technique to control CMV in 3-level neutral point clamped inverter based AC-DC-AC system.

The indirect-contact ECG measurement is a newly developed method for unconstrained and nonconscious measurement in daily life. This study introduced a new method of electrode circuit design developed for reducing the 60Hz power line noise observed at the indirect-contact ECG measurement. By the introduced common-mode-driven shielding, the voltage of the electrical shield surrounding the capacitive coupling electrode is maintained at the same as the common mode voltage. Though the method cannot reduce the level of common mode voltage itself, that reduces effectively the differential mode noise converted from the common mode voltage by the difference of cloth impedance between the two capacitive coupling electrode. The experiment results using the actual indirect-contact ECG showed that the 60Hz power line noise was reduced remarkably though the reduction ratio was smaller than the expected by the theory. Especially, the reduction ratio became large for the large difference of cloth. It is expected that the introduced method is useful for reducing the power line noise under condition of poor electrical grounding.

Conventional space vector pulse width modulation based asymmetrical dual inverter configuration produces high common mode voltage (CMV) variations. This CMV causes the flow of common mode current, which adversely affects the motor bearings and electromagnetic interference of nearby electronic systems. In this study, a simple and generalized carrier based pulse width modulation (PWM) technique is proposed for dual inverter configuration. This simple approach generates various continuous and discontinuous modulating signals based PWM algorithms. With the application of the discontinuous modulating signal based PWM algorithm to the asymmetrical dual inverter configuration, the CMV can be reduced with a slightly improved quality of output voltage. The performance of the continuous and discontinuous modulating signals based PWM algorithms is explored through both theoretical and experimental studies. Results show that the discontinuous modulating signal based PWM algorithm efficiently reduces the CMV and switching losses.

This paper describes an optimal configuration for multi-central inverters in a medium-voltage (MV) grid, which is suitable for large-scale photovoltaic (PV) power plants. We theoretically analyze a proposed common-mode equivalent model for problems associated with multi-central transformerless-type three-phase full bridge(3-FB) PV inverters employing two-winding MV transformers. We propose a synchronized PWM control strategy to effectively reduce the common-mode voltages that may simultaneously occur. In addition, we propose that the existing 3-FB topology may also have the configuration of a multi-central inverter with a two-winding MV transformer by making a simple circuit modification. Simulation and experimental results of three 350kW PV inverters in a multi-central configuration verify the effectiveness of the proposed synchronization control strategy. The modified transformerless-type 3-FB topology for a multi-central PV inverter configuration is verified using an experimental prototype of a 100kW PV inverter.

Gas Discharge Tubes (GDTs) are widely used as surge protectors for communication applications due to their small internal capacitance. In these days, however, they are mostly used in combined configurations, because the sparkover voltage required to initiate the discharge process in the GDTs and the time taken for arc formation process can be large enough to damage to sensitive circuits. For GDTs with a considerably high initial residual voltage, we should limit the peak voltage using a TVS or filter. We made a hybrid SPD circuits of common-mode type and differential-mode type with the filter using common-mode choke. Also, we applied lightning impulse voltage and ring wave voltage which frequency bandwidth are different each other and verified the characteristics of hybrid SPD circuits according to waveshapes. We describe how the applied SPDs operate in protection process steps with the actual data obtained from the residual voltage measurement at each step. The experiment results show that the surge voltage reduction with the choke coil is more effective in differential-mode circuit than in common-mode circuit.

This paper shows a satellite battery cell voltage monitor system to make differential voltage measurements when one or both measurement points are beyond voltage range allowed by a conventional differential amplifier. This system is particularly useful for monitoring the individual cell voltage of series-connected cells that constitute a rechargeable satellite battery in which some cell voltages must be measured in the presence of high common mode voltage.
Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) is a widely adopted technique to drive the motor using the voltage source inverters. Since they generate high frequency Common Mode (CM) Voltage, a high shaft voltage in induction motor is induced which leads to parasitic capacitive currents causing adverse effects such as premature deterioration of ball bearings and high levels of electromagnetic emissions. This paper presents an Active Cancellation Circuit (ACC) which can significantly reduce the CM voltage hence the common mode current in the three phase induction motor drives. In the proposed method the CM voltage is detected by the capacitors and applied to the frame of the motor to cancel the CM voltage hence the CM current. Unlike the conventional methods the proposed method does not insert the transformer in between the inverter and motor, a high power rating three phase transformer is not required and no losses associated with it. In addition the proposed method is applicable to any kind of PWM motor drives regardless of their PWM methods. The effectiveness of the proposed method is proved by the experiments with a three phase induction motor (1.1kW 415V/60Hz) combined with a three phase voltage source inverter modulated by the Space Vector Modulation (SVM).
