An empirical study on distribution channel choice of shippers (화주기업의 유통경로 선택요인 분석)

  • Logistic activities of shippers contains only origin-destin commodity flow information, but also contract relationships, cash flows and distribution channels. Under the lack of understanding of physical distribution channels, most studies have focused on the social and psychological aspects between manufacturers and retailers (e.g., mutual trust, power, conflict, reciprocal commitment, and so on). This study reports empirical results of distribution channel choice drawn from 2001 Korean Commodity Flow Survey(CFS) conducted by Korean government. Based on the CFS data, four distribution channels are classified. This study scrutinized how various factors including mode, commodity and firms characteristics affect distribution channel choice, and reported the problems of 2001 CFS survey questionaires and future directions.

Estimation of Freight Trip Generation Rates based on Commodity Flow Survey in Korea

  • In Korea, almost 700 industrial parks are under operation. Generally, industrial parks consist of national industrial parks and local industrial parks which are managed by a central government and by local governments respectively. The developing countries such as Korea, China and Vietnam etc. have constructed many industrial parks, which result in the change of land use pattern and also affect future trip demands. Therefore, in estimating traffic demands, it is very important to consider the industrial park development. This study aims to improve the methodology in estimating a freight trip generation rate with the data based on a nationwide commodity freight survey. The result showed that it is desirable to apply freight trip generation rate by the industry sector in estimating freight trip generations and using the production area of firm as an indicator. Specially, the reliability of the rates through a survey could be made sure because a sample rate based on firms in industrial parks was over 25% and the response rate was over 67%. The sample rate and response rate are very superior as compared to surveys conducted in many other countries. Because industrial parks have significant effects on forecasting transportation demand in pre-feasibility studies of transport and logistics projects, it is expected that the accuracy of freight trip demands would be improved through the results of this study.

  • This study examines the determinants of location decisions for domestic skippers and identifies them with the aid of the location choice model The authors have used Korea's commodity flow survey collected by the inter-regional shippers as well as socio-economic indicators. The results suggest that the location of shippers depend on agglomeration economies, market size, and logistics activities. Finally. this study suggests the direction of locational Policies to help the Korean government with logistics-related policies.

Value of Travel-Time Savings in Metropolitan Road Freight Transportation with Freight Classification Code (화물품목 분류에 따른 대도시권 공로화물운송의 시간가치 산정)

  • The objective of this study is to reveal a shipper's preference for road freight transport according to commodity classification code. The shipper's preference in freight transport can be obtained by using value of travel-time savings. The characteristics of freight are so various that the shipper's preference also appear widely different. In these days, there were few attempts to estimate value of freight travel-time savings in Korea. but most of them included only rail or marine freight transport so it couldn't obtain unique travel-time savings for road freight transport. In this study the value of travel-time savings of road freight transport was estimated according to commodity classification code. Revealed preference method and associated binominal logit models were applied to estimate the value of travel-time savings in transit from a Seoul metropolitan commodity flow survey data in 1998. Data sets were segmented by commodity classification code and nineteen binominal legit models were estimated according to segmented groups. The results of this study showed that the value of freight travel-time savings varied wide ranges from 16,441 won to 66,769 won per hour a vehicle along with commodity classification code.

Research Trend for Improvement of Freight Demand Estimation Methods (화물수요추정방법 개선을 위한 국내외 연구동향 분석 연구)

  • The traditional four-step demand model has limits in that it cannot reasonably reflect the logistic characteristics of freight transportation system. This is likely to cause problems when estimating the effects of logistics facilities. In order to enhance the reliability and availability of the freight demand estimation procedure it is needed to develop freight demand model which takes into account the logistic characteristics of firms. In the late 1990s, a number of researches on freight demand model considering logistics behaviors began in Europe while a few studies in the area have been conducted recently in Korea. This paper reviews recent advances of the freight model developments in the context of logistic behavior consideration. The main topics include 1) commodity classification, 2) P/C(Production- Consumption) estimation, 3) logistics network representation, 4) logistics chain model, and 5) commodity flow survey. In addition, this paper proposes future direction of the freight demand models with respect to the consideration of logistics characteristics.

  • In general, most of the firms do not settle down in one place for their pursuit of profit. There are many reasons for the relocation of the firms; procurement of raw material, market area, transportation cost and housing cost. The aspect of national policy, firm relocation has been systemically promoted for the purpose of logistics system efficiency. Nowadays balanced regional development has been issue. Another aspect, many countries have struggled for the preoccupancy of new place because of its production cost saving and curtailment of expenditure. The aim of this article is qualitative and quantitative analysis of relocation influence factors of domestic goods firms in Korea. This article dynamically analyzed the relocation influence factors for domestic goods firms in Korea. For the analysis this article made use of complementary survey (2006) out of the 3rd national logistics survey (2005). The complementary survey conducted pre-business district, business period, relocation reason, etc. This article dynamically analyzed from the three aspects; observation of average residence time in one business district, relocation factors, influence of market area. Analysis shows that relocation of firm is very high rate and the reasons of relocation play compositeness role. The results of determinants of location, firms approach the established market area closely and the firm's relocation is influenced by market area.
