The injector, which is used in a 4-valve gasoline engine, is required to be maintained the dual stream because of the design of dual intake port. In addition, the spray characteristics of fuel injector have strong influence on engine performance, exhaust emission, fuel consumption, and especially the cold start condition for the port injection. So, commercial gasoline injectors off different type were inspected. Those are 2 hole,4 hole, air shroud 4 hole, and air shroud 4 hole injector with separator. The spray behavior of dual stream was researched by the visualization system and PDPA system was employed to measure the droplet size. Atomization is one of the most important characteristic, so droplet size distributions and SMD are investigated. And the spray characteristics of each injector are also analyzed such as the spray tip penetration, spray angle, and separation angle.

In this study, the characteristics of high-pressure swirl injector have been studied using a commercial CFD code, STAR-CD and experiment to investigate the effect of the length of orifice and swirl port on the spray characteristics. Influences of swirl port angle and initial conditions have also been examined in terms of penetration depth and Sauter`s mean diameter. Computed results of the spray characteristics are compared with experimental results. The results show that the tangential velocity at the nozzle exit decreases, but the axial velocity increases as swirl port angle is increased. Hence, the static flow rate increases, but the initial spray angle decreases with increasing the swirl port angle. It is also shown that the values of the initial SMD used as input data for spray simulation influences the penetration depth and SMD. The spray pattern from the present numerical simulation agrees well with experimental result.

An experimental investigation was conducted to investigate the effect of Bio-ethanol fuel on the engine performance and exhaust emission characteristics under various engine operating conditions. To investigate the effect of bio-ethanol fuel, the commercial 1.6L SI engine equipped with 4 cylinder was tested on EC dynamometer. The engine performance including brake torque, brake specific fuel consumption, and barke specific energy consumption of bio-ethanol fuel was compared to those obtained by pure gasoline. Furthermore, the exhaust emissions were analyzed in terms of regulated exhaust emissions such as unburned hydrocarbon, oxides of nitrogen, and carbon monoxide.Result of this work shows that the effect of blending of ethanol to gasoline caused drastic decrease of emissions under various operating conditions. Also, improved engine performance such as brake torque and brake power were indicated for bio-ethanol fuel.
This study assessed the characteristic of BTEX (Benzene, Toluene, Ethylbenzene, Xylene) concentration ratios of industrial emission sources and the neighborhoods of industrial area, fuel such as gasoline, light oil, LPG, and similar gasoline, and ambient air in Daegu. The BTEX in aromatic compounds was the most abundant VOC in Daegu. The BTEX ratios were (0.2:2.6:1.0:1.8) for the neighborhoods of industrial area, (2.6:11.3:1.0:1.2) for residential area, (2.2:11.0:1.0:1.6) for commercial area, (1.0:14.9:1.0:1.3) for industrial area, and (0.2:2.6:1.0:1.8) for the neighborhoods of industrial area. Average BTEX ratios in Daegu were B/T ratio (0.1), B/EB ratio (1.5), B/X ratio (1.1), T/EB ratio (12.6), T/X ratio (10), EB/X ratio (0.7), Expecially, B/T ratio in Daegu was similar as the other cities, Bangkok, Manila, and Hongkong. Comparing other cities with B/T ratio, the main sources of VOC were vehicular exhaust and emission of industrial facilities. Furthermore, BTEX correlation were evaluated at the emission sources and regional areas. Results showed that correlation coefficient values of emission sources, fuels and neighborhood of industry were significant magnitude above 0.65(p<0.01). Also, there showed highly significant correlations among BTEX. Calculated correlation coefficients of ambient air sampling sites were $0.61{\sim}0.954$ for commercial /residential area and $0.613{\sim}0.998$ for industrial area. However, they showed different correlation between commercial/residental area and industrial area. It implied that the emission sources were different from each area.

The knock characteristics in an engine were investigated under homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) operation. Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG)and gasoline were used as fuels and injected at the intake port using port fuel injection equipment. Di-methyl ether (DME) was used as an ignition promoter and was injected directly into the cylinder near compression top dead center (TDC). A commercial variable valve timing device was used to control the volumetric efficiency and the amount of internal residual gas. Different intake valve timingsand fuel injection amounts were tested to verify the knock characteristics of the HCCI engine. The ringing intensity (RI) was used to define the intensity of knock according to the operating conditions. The RI of the LPG HCCI engine was lower than that of the gasoline HCCI engine at every experimental condition. The indicated mean effective pressure (IMEP) dropped when the RI was over 0.5 MW/m2and the maximum combustion pressure was over 6.5MPa. There was no significant relationship between RI and fuel type. The RI can be predicted by the crank angle degree (CAD) at 50 CA. Carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrocarbon (HC) emissions were minimized at high RI conditions. The shortest burn duration under low RI was effective in achieving low HC and CO emissions.

Improvement of the atomization characteristics by adopting the air-shrouded injector has been considered as one of the important methods for decreasing HC emissions in SI engines. Thus, in this study to develop air-shrouded injector with a finer spray, atomization characteristics of differ-ent types of commercial air-shrouded injectors were investigated through the spray imaging and the drop size measurements. As a results, it was found that the internal mixing type of air-shroud-ed injector had a good atomization characteristics. But, a number of large droplets were found in the internal mixing type commercial injector, this shortcoming was improved by adopting the thread type air passages in the air nozzle.

Catalytic decomposition over HZSM-5 was carried out in semi-batch reactor to recover gasoline from waste plastics(HDPE). To enhance the liquid yield with a molecule range of gasoline, the properties of catalytic decomposition were investigated over a commercial Si/ZSM-5 catalyst and HZSM-5 catalysts modified with P and Mg. Optimum loadings of P and Mg on HZSM-5 were 0.5 wt% and 2.0 wt%, respectively, based on conversion and liquid yield. $NH_3-TPD$ profile indicated that strong and weak acid sites totally decreased in P loading on HZSM-5 catalyst, strong acid sites moderately decreased and weak acid sites sharply reduced in Mg loading on HZSM-5 catalyst. In the case of Si/ZSM-5 catalyst, all acid sites almost disappeared, subsequently, catalytic decomposition significantly decreased, and little liquid product was produced. When HZSM-5 catalyst was modified with P and Mg, the carbon distribution of liquid product was shifted to lower carbon number and its all components was within a molecular range of gasoline($C_5-C_{11}$). Especially, over Mg(2.0 wt%)/ZSM-5 catalyst, 55.8% of liquid yield with 100% of a molecular range of gasoline, was obtained at $400^{\circ}C$, suggesting it as a promising catalyst for recycle of waste plastics.

Since recently exhaust gas regulation for a non-road small engine as well as commercial vehicle engine has been enforced, a carburettor of a small engine should be replaced by an electronic fuel injection system. In this study, the spray characteristics of the 400cc gasoline small engine injector has been experimentally analyzed. Based on the experimental results, suitable injector for the small engine has been selected. Through the test rig measuring spray mass distribution, fuel distribution characteristics of 3 hole- and 6 hole-injector has been analyzed. Through the visualization equipment, injector spray angle, penetration length and spray width have been measured and analyzed. Considering spray characteristics and stability, 6 hole-injector is selected for the 400cc gasoline small engine.

This paper is the first of several companion papers which compare the methods of Air-fuel ratio determination. There are many methods which calculate Air-Fuel ratio from exhaust emission. Most of them are based on the simple chemical equations, which use balance of atom, and the error of the calculation is negligible as far as the instrumentation accuracy is guaranteed. They assume homogeneous mixture and complete combustion to the extent of oxygen availability. Because of these simple assumptions, they cannot offer the information about the fuel distribution state and the malfunction of instrument. For these limitations, Eltinge offered new one based on stricter mathematical model. This result coincides with the others very well and gives more information about the mixture state and instrumentation. Consequently this might be a general solution for Air-fuel ratio determination and exhaust composition. The objects of the calculation, however, were not commercial fuels except gasoline and the compensation method of unburned hydrocarbon was not appropriate to recent analyzer. Moreover he did not consider the fuel which contains oxygen, such as methanol, ethanol and blend of gasoline-alcohol. In this paper, Eltinge chart is expanded to the arbitrary fuel composition as the reference exhaust compositions for the purpose of further discussions about Air-fuel ratio determination methods and the charts fur gasoline, diesel, methanol, M85, liquefied petroleum gas(LPG), natural gas(NG), propane, butane are illustrated.
This study focused on the development of high performance catalyst for autothermal reforming (ATR) of gasoline to produce hydrogen. The ATR was carried out over MgO/Al2O3 supported metal catalysts prepared under various experimental conditions. The catalysts before and after reaction were characterized by N2-physisorption, CO-chemisorption, SEM and XRD. The performance of supported multi-metal catalysts were better than that of supported mono-metal catalysts. Especially, it was observed that the conversion of iso-octane over prepared Ni/Fe/MgO/Al2O3 catalyst was 99.9 % comparable with commercial catalyst (ICI) and the selectivity of hydrogen over the prepared catalyst was 65% higher than ICI catalyst. Furthermore, it was identified that the sulfur tolerance of prepared catalyst was much better than ICI catalyst based on the ATR reaction of iso-octane containing sulfur of 100 ppm. Therefore, Ni/Fe/MgO/Al2O3 catalyst can be applied for a fuel reformer, hydrogen station and on-board reformer in furl cell powered vehicles.
