  • The importance of ensuring the inherent safety and security has been more emphasized in recent years to demonstrate the integrity of nuclear facilities under external human-induced events (e.g. aircraft crashes). This work suggests a simulation methodology to effectively evaluate the impact of a commercial aircraft engine onto a dry storage facility. A full-scale engine model was developed and verified by Riera force-time history analysis. A reinforced concrete (RC) structure of a dry storage facility was also developed and material behavior of concrete was incorporated using three constitutive models namely: Continuous Surface Cap, Winfrith, and Karagozian & Case for comparison. Strain-based erosion limits for concrete were suitably defined and the local responses were then compared and analyzed with empirical formulas according to variations in impact velocity. The proposed methodology reasonably predicted such local damage modes of RC structure from the engine missile, and the analysis results agreed well with the calculations of empirical formulas. This research is expected to be helpful in reviewing the dry storage facility design and in the probabilistic risk assessment considering diverse impact scenarios.

  • In this work, the safety performance of a commercial motorcycle helmet already placed on the market is assessed. The assessed motorcycle helmet is currently homologated by several relevant motorcycle standards. Impacts including translational and rotational motions are accurately simulated through a finite element numerical framework. The developed model was validated against experimental results: firstly, a validation concerning the constitutive model for the expanded polystyrene, the material responsible for energy absorption during impact; secondly, a validation regarding the acceleration measured at the headform's centre of gravity during the linear impacts defined in the ECE R22.05 standard. Both were successfully validated. After model validation, an oblique impact was simulated and the results were compared against head injury thresholds in order to predict the resultant head injuries. From this comparison, it was concluded that brain injuries such as concussion and diffuse axonal injury may occur even with a helmet certified by the majority of the motorcycle helmet standards. Unfortunately, these standards currently do not contemplate rotational components of acceleration. Conclusion points out to a strong recommendation on the necessity of including rotational motion in forthcoming motorcycle helmet standards and improving the current test procedures and head injury criteria used by the standards, to improve the safety between the motorcyclists.

  • This paper presents the analytical closed form solution for the impact load of a collision between rigid bodies and its application to a spent nuclear fuel disposal canister accidentally dropped and impacted on the ground. This paper performed a study on the numerical rigid body dynamic analysis to compute the impact load between two rigid bodies, especially, the impulsive force which is applied to the spent nuclear fuel disposal canister in the accidental drop and impact event on the ground. Through this study the impulsive force which is occurring in the spent nuclear fuel disposal canister under accidental drop and impact event on the ground and required in the process of structural safety design of the canister is computed numerically. The main content of this numerical study is about the technical method how to compute the impulsive force applied to the canister under the accidental drop and impact event on the ground by using the commercial computer code for the rigid body dynamic analysis. On the basis of this study a problem to compute the impulsive force which is occurring in the canister in the case of collision with the ground is numerically treated. This numerically computed impulsive force is compared with the theoretical value, which shows a good agreement.

  • This paper is concerned with the weight reduction of front side member of a vehicle considering the application of high strength steel sheet. The influence of steel sheet grade and thickness on the energy absorption, impact load and deformed shape of front side member is investigated by using reverse engineering and FE-analysis. The reverse engineering is applied to obtain 3D model of front side member from B.I.W for the FE simulation. FE analysis is carried out with commercial crash analysis SW PAM-CRASH. The crashworthiness of front side member is considerably improved with steel sheet strength and thickness increase. From the result of this study the weight reduction in automotive parts for the improvement of the fuel efficiency can be easily achieved with replacing high strength steel without deterioration of crashworthiness.

  • In multibody dynamic analysis including contact and impact, there are two major analysis methods, i.e., piecewise analysis and continuous analysis. Modeling of contact phenomena is mainly classified with a Kelvin-Voigt model or a model of Hertz contact model. In this paper, a contact module fur AutoDyn7 program was developed and implemented. Both the Kelvin-Voigt model and a model of Hertz contact law were developed. The process of this module is composed of contact distinction and the contact force calculation. Two examples were verified and compared to the commercial program DADS.

  • This study aims to examine the influence of capital structure on the business efficiency of joint stock commercial banks listed on the Vietnamese stock market. The article uses data collected from the financial statements of 15 prominent joint-stock commercial banks out of 27 joint-stock commercial banks listed in Vietnam from 2011 to 2021. The research uses E-view software in quantitative analysis to build regression models to determine the relationship and the impact of capital structure factors on the business efficiency of listed joint stock commercial banks. Research results show that ROA is affected by 2 variables of capital structure. It is the sum of customer deposits to total assets and total liabilities to total equity. Total debt to total equity and total customer deposits to total assets both have a negative effect on ROA. For the regression results of ROA with all control variables, the control variables have a positive relationship with the dependent variable. The article has provided recommendations based on the research findings to determine the proper capital structure. Managers must solve the outstanding amount of mobilized capital in previous years, combined with the bad debt handling activities that have arisen.

  • Despite the seeming glamour and popularity of commercial modeling, the industry has a darker side. Many models fail to adapt to the profession, and there are frequent cases of models quitting after a relatively short period of time. For commercial modeling agencies, this high turnover rate causes considerable disruption to their business, negatively impacting credibility and leading to decreased sales. As such, this study aimed to investigate the turnover intention of commercial models in relation to professional identity, emotional labor, and role conflict, and to propose remedies for their high turnover intention. Towards this, the relationship between commercial models' turnover intention and the factors of professional identity, emotional labor, and role conflict, and further analyzed the moderating effect of self-belief, attractiveness, and ethical environment. The analysis found that the factors having the greatest effect on commercial models' turnover intention were, in order, role conflict, emotional labor, and professional identity. When hierarchical multiple regression analysis was used to analyze the moderating effect of self-belief, attractiveness, and ethical environment on the relationship between these independent variables and their effect on turnover intention, it was found that the negative impact of emotional labor on turnover intention is moderated by self-belief, and the negative impact of low professional identity on turnover intention is moderated by ethical environment. These findings underscore the importance of self-belief in commercial models, as emotional laborers, and suggest that commercial models are not born but are rather made, namely in a desirable work environment that is professional and well-organized.

  • Usually many researchers have used the modified Hertzian contact law or experimental static indentation law to analyze impact response of composite laminates subjected to the low-velocity impact. In this study, physical meaning of the method using the laws was investigated and the difference between the analytical results obtained using the laws was also investigated. Furthermore parametric study on contact constant and exponent in the contact law was performed. Finally it was shown that a linearized contact law can be well applied to low-velocity impact response analysis of composite laminates. If this concept is used, commercial finite element software can be used to solve impact problem without making any auxiliary code.

  • In this study, we carried out a structural analysis for determining the stresses acting on the tempered glass of a freely falling cellular phone using ANSYS 13.0, commercial finite element code. We designed a phone heavier than any contemporary cellular phone and performed finite element analysis using the falling speed at a height of 104 cm, which is equal to of the average leg length of Koreans. By determining the maximum stress acting on the phone's tempered glass and frame, we identified the location of large deformation. Furthermore, we evaluated the maximum/minimum equivalent stress and deformation of the reinforced glass and frame as functions of time.
