  • This paper presents a numerical study on the overall performance and local flow characteristics of the sirocco fan. The effects of impeller and volute shape distribution on the performance of the sirocco fan were numerically studied using a commercial CFD code and a DOE (design of experiments) software. At present, our attention was focused on the relation of the results of DOE and the performance of the sirocco fan. As a main result of the optimization, the performance of the sirocco fan was successfully improved. Also, detailed effects of geometric parameter of impeller and volute in the sirocco fan were discussed.

  • The transfer matrix and unsteady cavitation characteristics, cavitation compliance and mass flow gain factor, of cavitating inducer were evaluated by CFD using commercial software. Quasi-steady values of cavitation compliance and mass flow gain factor were obtained first by using steady calculations at various flow rate and inlet cavitation number. Then unsteady calculations were made to determine the transfer matrix and the cavitation characteristics. The results are compared with experiments to show the validity of calculations.

  • In the present work, flow analysis has been performed for side channel type double stage ring blower by solving three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equation. Shear stress transport model is used as turbulent closure. The commercial CFD code CFX 11.0 is used for the calculations. Each of two stage is calculated separately and the second stage inlet flow is same as the first stage outlet flow so that consecutive calculation is possible. Velocity and pressure fields have been analyzed at the midplane between blades. The numerical results are validated with experimental data for head coefficients at different flow coefficients.

  • The present paper describes the results of performance analysis for UH-60A rotor blade in hover. For the numerical simulations, commercial CFD software, FLUENT was used with Spalart-Allmaras turbulence model. The flow solver was based on node based scheme and second order spatial accuracy options was used for simulations. For the enhancement of wake capturing capability, high resolution grid was used around tip vortex region. Granting that somewhat over prediction of thrust was observed near blade tip region, performance was well correlated with experimental data within 3% accuracy in the operating region. Finally it was shown that the present flow solver can be used for preliminary performance analysis tool for hovering helicopter rotor blades.

  • This paper dealt with the flow simulation for the optimum designed propeller for Micro Aerial Vehicle, using a commercial CFD program(FLUENT). The propeller was modeled by the Multiple Reference Frame(MRF) method. For the validation of the computational method, the flow field analysis results for the propeller were compared with the flow analysis results, which are using Xfoil, for the optimum design, and with the wind tunnel data of a similar propeller model. By these validation processes, the reliability of MRF method was confirmed.

  • Recently, several open source codes for computational fluid dynamics (CFD) have been emerged and are spreading fast. Our group has chosen OpenFOAM as a platform to develop our own in-house code. In this paper, we would like to share the information on the codes and what we have experienced so far. We introduce several features of OpenFOAM, which include the performance compared with commercial packages, estimation for current user population and our own prospect for future improvement in performance and growth in user population. In addition, we briefly introduce our experience gained in embedding the level set method into the OpenFOAM.

  • This study describes effects of width contraction in vaneless diffuser on the performance of centrifugal compressors using commercial CFD code. Numerical analysis for three different diffusers such as Parallel, half contraction, and full contraction was performed. The results show that the performance of the centrifugal compressor is improved through the use of the diffusers with width parallel in high flow rate. The width contraction of diffusers is influenced static pressure rises. Comparison with the experimental data shows agreement.

  • Numerical analysis is conducted to design the high temperature heat exchanger of Stirling engine by using the commercial CFD solver FLUENT. The fin-tube type of heat exchanger numerical calculation is conducted by changing the shape, number and material of fin shape of working fluid channel, etc in three-dimensional combustion field. Adjusted one-way constant velocity is used as the representative velocity of oscillating flow. The optimum design of heat exchanger considering the heat trasfer capability is suggested by using the calculation results.

  • In this paper, a three-dimensional numerical study on flow pattern in winter along connecting passageway of a composite building was conducted using a commercial CFD package. The incompressible Navier-Stokes equation coupled was solved by using SIMPLE algorithm in order to find steady solutions. It was shown that a upward flow is generated inside the building in winter due to buoyancy effect and that the air inside connecting passageway flows from the shorter building to the taller one regardless of the slope of the passageway. Further, it was found that the magnitude of air velocity inside connecting passageway increases as the uphill slope to the taller building increases and decreases as the downhill slope to the taller one increases, although the variation in the magnitude of fluid velocity is not substantial. Lastly, it was shown that the maximum air velocity inside connecting passageway is less than the allowable limit for all the cases considered in this study.
