The relationship among the flame radiation, NOx emissions, residence time, and global strain rate are examined for turbulent non-premixed jet flames with wide variations in coaxial air conditions. Measurements of NOx emission, flame geometry and flame radiation were made to explain the NOx emission scaling based on global parameters such as flame residence time, global strain rate, and radiant fraction. The overall 1/2-power scaling is observed in coaxial air flames, irrespective of coaxial air conditions, but the degree of deviation from the 1/2-slope curve in each case differs from one another. From the comparison between the results of pure hydrogen flames and those of helium diluted hydrogen flames, it is observed that flame radiation plays a significant role in pure hydrogen flames with coaxial air and the deviation from 1/2-power scaling may be explained in two reasons: the difference in the flame radiation and the difference in jet similarity in coaxial air flames. From the radiation measurements, more detailed explanations on these deviations were suggested.
The flame patterns were investigated in an oscillating combustion burner equipped with a specially designed proportioning valve. The proportioning valve is driven by a solenoid and has an elastomer part which controls the valve opening area. For characterizing the valve, nozzle exit velocities were measured with a hot wire anemometry. The flame patterns were investigated by direct photographing methods using a high speed camera and a digital camera. The results show that the nozzle exit velocities could be controlled diversely and rapidly changed, so the valve seemed appropriate for the oscillating combustion burner application. Mushroom shape and highly wrinkled structure were typical features of the flames in the oscillating combustion burner. As the oscillating intensity of the fuel flow increased, the flame length was shortened.
Numerical simulations are conducted at atmospheric pressure in order to understand the effect of the oxygen enrichment level on structure of $CH_4/O_2/N_2$ premixed flames. Under several equivalence ratios the flame speeds are calculated and compared with those obtained from the experiments, the results of which are in good agreement. The effects of the oxygen enrichment are investigated on flames under fuel-rich conditions. As the oxygen enrichment level is increased from 0.21 to 1, the flame speed and the temperature are increased. The emission index of $CO_2$ is decreased in cases of flames for fuel rich mixtures, so the efficiency of combustion may be decreased. The maximum emission index of NO is obtained for 0.6 of the oxygen enrichment level.
The decomposition of tetrafluoromethane has been investigated with the reaction mechanism proposed for freely propagating $CH_4/CF_4/O_2/N_2$ premixed flames on the oxygen enrichment. The factors affecting on the removal efficiency of tetrafluoromethane were analyzed. The increase in flame temperature due to oxygen enrichment has a great influence on the removal efficiency of tetrafluoromethane. At the same oxygen enrichment condition, the removal efficiency in the rich flame is higher than one in the lean flame. The increase of the F/H ratio leads to decrease the flame temperature and the removal efficiency of tetrafluoromethan is decreased at the flame temperature of 2600 K or lower, The elementary reactions that dominate the consumption of tetrafluoromethane are (R1) $CF_4+M=CF_3+F+M$ and (R2) $CF_4+H=CF_3+HF$. (R1) has the greatest effect on the consumption of tetrafluoromethane under the oxygen enhanced flames.
The surface flames in porous ceramic burner are experimentally characterized to investigate the effects of equivalence ratio and firing rates. The results show that the surface flames are classified into green, red radiant and blue surface flame as decrease of equivalence ratio. And each flame is maintained very stably and shows the same flame characteristics at any orientation of ceramic burner. Particularly the blue surface flame was found to be very stable at very lean equivalence ratio at 200 to $800\;kw/m^2$ firing rates. And the exhausted NOx was analysed to find out which flame has lower NOx emission. The blue surface flame showed the lowest NOx emission regardless of the location of burner since it sustained very stable at lean mixture ratio.
The reformer system is a chemical device that drives the conversion of hydrocarbon to hydrogen rich gas under high temperature environment($600-1,000^{\circ}C$). Generally, NG(Natural Gas) or AOG(Anode Off Gas) is used as fuel of fuel cell reformer combustion system. The experimental study to analyze the combustion characteristics of a premixed ceramic burner used for 0.5-1.0 kW fuel cell reformer was performed. Ceramic burner experiments using NG and AOG were carried out to investigate the flame stability characteristics by heating capacity, equivalence ratio and different fuels respectively. The results show that surface flames can be classified into green, red, blue and lift-off flames as the equivalence ratio of methane-air mixture decreases. And the stable flames can be established using NG and AOG as reformer fuel in the perforated ceramic burner. In particular, the blue flame is found to be stable at a lean equivalence ratio under different mixture conditions of NG and AOG for the 0.5 to 1.0 kW fuel cell system power range. NOx emission is under 60 ppm between 0.70 to 0.78 of equivalence ratio and CO emission is under 50 ppm between 0.70 to 0.84 of equivalence ratio.

For characterizing the valve, nozzle exit velocities were measured with a Hot Wire Anemometry. The combustion characteristics of 0.03MW turbulent methane/oxygen diffusion flames have been investigated to give basic informations for designing industrial oxyfuel combustors. NOx reduction has become one of the most determining factors in the combustor design since 3-5% nitrogen is intrinsically included from the current oxygen producing processes. Flame lengths and NOx concentrations were measured by varying flow velocities with and without installing quarls. Flame stabilities are significantly enhanced by oxyfuel combustion in contrast to air-fuel combustion. Flame length decreases with increasing fuel or oxygen velocity because of the enhancement of turbulent mixing. NOx concentration was reduced with increasing flo velocities. This can be attributed to the entrainment of inert product gases into flame decreasing flame temperature. The installation of quarl on the burners rather increased NOx concentration since the quarl blocked the entrainment above the nozzles.

This study realizes the conceptual method to predict combustion instability in actual full-scale combustion chamber of rocket engines by experimental tests with model (sub-scale) chamber. The model chamber was designed based on the methodologies proposed in the previous work regarding geometrical dimensions and operating conditions, and hot-fire test procedures were followed to obtain stability boundaries. From the experimental tests, two instability regions are presented by the parameters of combustion-chamber pressure and mixture (oxidizer/fuel) ratio, which are customary for combustor designers. It is found that instability characteristics in the chamber with the adopted jet injectors can be explained by the correlation between the characteristic burning or mixing time and the characteristic acoustic time: In each instability region, dynamic behaviors of flames are investigated to verify the hydrodynamically-derived characteristic lengths of the jet injectors. Large-amplitude pressure oscillation observed in upper instability region is found to be generated by lifted-off flames.

In many combustion systems, swirling combustion air is extensively applied as an aid for stabilization of high intensity combustion pocesses. Swirl, generally, causes significant effects on the flow field which, in turn, determines the size, shape, and stability of flames, and combustion intensity. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of swirls on flames produced from a model combustor designed in this paper. In order to impart swirls to the combustion air, a movable block swirl generator was used. Temperature distribution and radiative heat flux along the centerline of the swirling flame were measured. Data obtained from these swirl flows can be used as design data for high intensity or high efficiency combustion systems. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. Flame temperature profiles were measured at various swirl number. 2. The axial distance for maximum temperature from the centerline of burner increased as the swirl number increased. 3. Radiative heat flux increased as the swirl number and axial distance from burner increased.
